How to draw unemployment benefits in Washington - confused about the process
I got laid off from my warehouse job last week and I'm completely lost about how to draw unemployment benefits in Washington. My supervisor said I should be eligible but I have no idea where to start or what forms I need to fill out. Do I apply online somewhere? How long does it take to get approved? I've never had to deal with this before and I'm getting stressed about paying my bills next month. Any help would be appreciated.

You'll need to file your initial claim through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. Make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months ready. The process is mostly online now and takes about 30-45 minutes to complete your initial application.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or anything like that?

•Not for the initial filing, but keep them handy in case Washington ESD needs to verify your wages later during adjudication.

Just went through this myself 2 months ago. After you file online you'll get a determination letter in about 2-3 weeks if everything goes smoothly. Then you have to file weekly claims every week to actually get paid. Don't forget to do your job search activities or they'll cut you off.

•What kind of job search activities? How many do I need to do?

Gianni Serpent
•You need 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. Can be applying for jobs, networking, going to job fairs, etc. Washington ESD is pretty strict about this.

If you run into any issues getting through to Washington ESD by phone (which happens a lot), I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

•Yeah it's real, I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They handle the calling for you so you don't have to sit on hold forever.

MAKE SURE you file your weekly claims EVERY WEEK even if your initial claim is still pending! I made that mistake and it delayed my whole case by like a month. The system is really picky about this stuff.

•Good to know! When do I start filing the weekly claims?

Joshua Hellan
•You can start filing them the week after you submit your initial claim. Don't wait for approval.

•Thanks, hopefully it won't be too complicated.

One more important thing - make sure you're available for work and actively seeking employment. Washington ESD will ask about this on your weekly claims. If you have any restrictions on when you can work or what jobs you'll accept, be honest about it but know it might affect your eligibility.

•What if I can only work certain hours because of childcare issues?

Ryder Ross
•That's usually okay as long as you're still available for a reasonable amount of work hours. Just be upfront about your availability when you file.

Oh and don't be surprised if your claim goes into adjudication - that's when they review everything to make sure you qualify. Mine took 3 weeks to get through adjudication but I eventually got all my back pay.

•What causes a claim to go into adjudication?
0 coins
Gianni Serpent
•Could be anything - they might need to verify your separation reason with your employer, check your work history, or just randomly audit claims. It's pretty common.

been trying to call washington esd for weeks about my claim and can never get through, phones are always busy or they hang up on me after hours of waiting

Henry Delgado
•That's exactly why I used Claimyr - they handle all the calling hassle so you don't have to deal with the busy signals and getting disconnected.

•might have to try that, this is driving me crazy

The whole system is a nightmare honestly. I've been waiting 6 weeks for my adjudication to clear and still haven't gotten a penny. Washington ESD acts like they're doing us a favor when this is supposed to be insurance we paid into.

•I feel you, the waiting is the worst part. Have you tried reaching out to your state representative? Sometimes that helps move things along.

•Didn't think of that, might be worth a shot at this point.

For the original poster - here's the step by step process: 1) File initial claim at esd.wa.gov 2) Wait for determination letter 3) File weekly claims every week 4) Complete job search activities 5) Keep detailed records of everything. The key is being consistent with your weekly filings and job search log.

•This is super helpful, thank you! Should I start looking for work right away or wait until I'm approved?
0 coins
Ryder Ross
•Start looking right away! You need to be actively seeking work from day one to maintain eligibility.

just a heads up that if you worked part time or had multiple jobs you might need to provide extra documentation. washington esd was really picky about my work history

Does anyone know if there's a waiting period before you can start collecting benefits? I heard some states make you wait a week.

Ryder Ross
•Washington doesn't have a waiting week anymore - they eliminated it during COVID and kept it that way. You can get paid starting from your first eligible week.

•That's good news at least!

Make sure you understand the difference between being laid off vs fired vs quitting. Only certain separation reasons qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington.
0 coins
Kyle Wallace
•I was definitely laid off due to lack of work, so I think I'm good there.
0 coins
Sophia Rodriguez
•Yeah that should qualify no problem. Just make sure that's what your employer reports too.

the job search requirement is 3 activities per week but make sure you're doing quality searches not just throwing applications everywhere. washington esd can audit your job search log

•What counts as a quality job search activity?

•Applying to jobs that match your skills and experience, networking contacts, career fairs, informational interviews. Document everything with dates and details.

Another tip - if you end up needing to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim status or any issues, Claimyr has been a lifesaver for actually getting through. Way better than spending all day trying to call yourself.

•How much does something like that cost?

Henry Delgado
•I'd rather pay a reasonable fee to actually reach someone than waste entire days calling for free and getting nowhere. Worth it for the time savings alone.

been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and it gets easier once you know the routine. first time is always confusing but the system works if you follow all the rules

Don't forget you'll need to report any income you earn while collecting benefits, even small amounts from odd jobs or freelance work. Washington ESD will find out eventually and you don't want to deal with an overpayment situation.

•Good point, I wasn't planning to work but if something comes up I'll make sure to report it.

•Yeah always better to be honest upfront than deal with the headache later.

if your claim gets denied for any reason dont give up! you can appeal the decision. lots of people get approved on appeal even if they were initially denied

Kyle Wallace
•Hopefully I won't need to worry about that but good to know appeals are an option.

The most important thing is to be patient and persistent. Washington ESD processes thousands of claims and sometimes things get delayed, but if you stay on top of your weekly filings and job search requirements you'll eventually get your benefits.
