How much unemployment benefits can I get in Washington ESD 2025?
I'm trying to figure out what my weekly unemployment benefit amount would be if I file a claim this year. I've been working at a manufacturing job making about $4,200 per month for the past 18 months. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amounts for 2025? I heard they use your highest quarter wages but I'm not sure exactly how it works.

Washington ESD uses your base period wages to calculate your weekly benefit amount. They look at the highest quarter in your base period and divide by 26. The maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is $999 per week, but most people get less than that depending on their earnings history.

•Thanks! So if my highest quarter was around $12,600, that would be about $485 per week?

•That sounds about right. You can also use the benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website to get an estimate before you file your claim.

•How long did it take to get approved? I'm worried about the waiting period.

•took about 10 days for mine to get approved, no issues. make sure you have all your employer info ready when you file

The calculation can be tricky because it depends on your base period. For claims filed in 2025, they're looking at wages from October 2023 through September 2024 typically. If you haven't worked the full base period, your benefit amount might be lower. I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check my calculation until I found Claimyr.com - they helped me get connected to an agent who explained exactly how my wages were being calculated. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•What's Claimyr? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days but can't get through.

•It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents when the phone lines are busy. Way easier than trying to call yourself and getting hung up on repeatedly.

•I've heard mixed things about third-party services. Did you have to pay anything?

THE SYSTEM IS SO CONFUSING!! I've been laid off twice and still don't understand how they calculate benefits. First time I got $389/week, second time only $312/week even though I was making more money. Makes no sense at all!!!

•The difference probably has to do with which quarters they used for your base period. If you had gaps in employment, that can affect your calculation significantly.

•Yeah I had some time between jobs which probably messed up my base period. Wish someone would explain this stuff better!

i think the max went up this year from like $844 to $999 but most ppl dont get the max unless youre making really good money

•Do you know what income level you need to hit the maximum?

Yara Campbell
•You'd need to earn at least $25,974 in your highest quarter to qualify for the maximum weekly benefit amount.

Don't forget about the waiting week - there's no waiting week for most unemployment claims in Washington now, so you can get benefits starting from your first week of unemployment if you're eligible. Also remember you have to actively search for work and report your job search activities.

•What are the job search requirements? I haven't started looking yet since I just got laid off yesterday.

Tami Morgan
•You need to make at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. Can include applying for jobs, networking, attending job fairs, etc.

My sister got $567 per week when she filed last month. She was making around $65k per year at her office job. The amount seems pretty fair based on what she was earning.

•That helps give me an idea. I'm making less than that so mine will probably be lower.

Just be aware that unemployment benefits are taxable income. They don't automatically withhold taxes so you might want to have them take out 10% to avoid owing money at tax time.

Ella rollingthunder87
•Good point, I didn't think about taxes. Can you change the withholding after you start receiving benefits?

Ruby Knight
•Yes, you can update your tax withholding preferences in your eServices account at any time.

The benefit calculator on Washington ESD website is pretty accurate if you have your wage info handy. Saved me from having to call and wait on hold forever.

Been getting unemployment for 6 weeks now and still confused about how they came up with my amount. Got $492/week but when I try to calculate it myself using their formula I get a different number. Anyone else have this problem?

•There might be other factors affecting your calculation like part-time work in your base period or wage adjustments. You should call Washington ESD to get clarification.

•I've tried calling but never get through. Maybe I'll try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier.

•Definitely worth trying Claimyr if you can't get through on your own. They got me connected within a couple hours when I was having calculation questions.

remember you can only collect for 26 weeks total unless there's some extension program. make sure you're actively job searching the whole time

Ella rollingthunder87
•26 weeks should be enough time to find something hopefully. Is there any way to extend beyond that?

Tami Morgan
•Extensions are rare and usually only during major economic downturns. Best to plan on finding work within the 26 week period.

The whole system seems designed to confuse people honestly. I had to file an appeal because they initially calculated my benefits wrong and used the wrong quarter for my highest wages. Took 3 months to get it sorted out.

Ella rollingthunder87
•That sounds like a nightmare. How did you prove they used the wrong quarter?

Ali Anderson
•Had to get wage records from all my employers and submit them with the appeal. Pain in the butt but worth it - got an extra $89 per week.

quick question - if you work part time while collecting unemployment do they reduce your benefits?
0 coins
Tami Morgan
•Yes, they reduce your weekly benefit by a portion of what you earn from part-time work. There's a formula they use but basically any earnings over $5 per week will reduce your benefit amount.

•good to know, thanks. might pick up some gig work while job hunting

Don't forget to file your weekly claims every week even if you haven't found work yet. Miss a week and you lose those benefits permanently.

•When do the weekly claims need to be filed by?

•You have to file by 11:59 PM on Saturday for the previous week. Set a reminder on your phone!

FYI the dependency allowance can add extra money to your weekly benefit if you have kids or a spouse. It's like $25 per dependent or something.

•I don't have dependents but good to know for others reading this thread.

•its actually $32 per dependent now for 2025, they increased it slightly

Last piece of advice - keep all your documentation organized. Pay stubs, termination letter, job search log, everything. Washington ESD can ask for proof of anything at any time and if you don't have it you could lose benefits.

One more thing - if your claim gets stuck in adjudication like mine did, that Claimyr service really helps get answers. I was waiting 5 weeks with no updates until I used them to get through to an actual person who could explain what was happening.

Ella rollingthunder87
•What causes a claim to go into adjudication?
0 coins
Lucas Parker
•Usually happens when there's a question about your separation reason or eligibility. Mine was because my employer contested the claim initially.

Just wanted to add that if you're in a union, check with them too. Sometimes they have additional resources or can help with the unemployment process.

•Not in a union but that's good advice for others who might be.

Best of luck OP! The unemployment system isn't perfect but the benefits really help while you're job searching. Just stay on top of all the requirements and you should be fine.
