How much does unemployment pay per week in Washington state?
I'm about to file for unemployment benefits and trying to figure out my budget. Does anyone know what the weekly benefit amount is in Washington? I was making about $4,200 a month at my last job before I got laid off. I've heard it's based on your previous wages but can't find clear info on Washington ESD's website about the actual dollar amounts.

The weekly benefit amount depends on your quarterly wages from your base year. Washington ESD calculates it as roughly 3.85% of your total base year wages, divided by 52 weeks. Maximum weekly benefit is currently $999 per week in 2025. You can use the benefit calculator on their secure site to get an estimate.

•Thanks! Is there a minimum amount too? What if someone was working part-time?

Astrid Bergström
•Yes, minimum weekly benefit is $295. For part-time workers, you still need to meet the minimum wage requirements during your base year to qualify.

i think its like 60% of what you made but theres a cap. my friend was getting around $800/week but she was making good money before

•It's not exactly 60% - that's more like what some other states do. Washington uses a different formula based on your highest quarter wages.

The Washington ESD benefit calculator is pretty accurate if you have your wage info handy. You'll need your wages from the last 5 completed quarters. Just a heads up - if you're having trouble getting through to verify your benefit amount, I used Claimyr recently to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. They have this service where they call you back when an agent is available instead of you waiting on hold forever. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, I'll check that out. I tried calling Washington ESD yesterday and was on hold for 2 hours before giving up.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true tbh. How much does it cost?

Chloe Martin
•Yeah it's legit - they don't ask for any personal info upfront, just your callback number. Way better than sitting on hold all day.

Just filed last week and my benefit amount was $743/week. I was making about $75k annually. The process was pretty straightforward once I got my account set up on SecureAccess Washington.

•That's helpful to know! Did you get approved right away or did it go into adjudication?

Anastasia Kuznetsov
•Took about 10 days for approval. No adjudication issues since my layoff was straightforward - company downsizing.

The maximum changes every year. In 2024 it was like $929 I think? Now its $999 for 2025. They usually announce the new amounts in fall for the following year.

•Correct - the maximum weekly benefit amount is adjusted annually based on the state's average weekly wage.

Thanks everyone! Sounds like I should be getting somewhere in the $650-750 range based on my salary. Going to file this weekend.

•Good luck! Make sure you have all your employer info ready when you file. And don't forget you'll need to start doing your weekly claims right away.

•Will do, thanks for all the help!

One thing to remember is that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later. I always have them take out 10% to avoid a big tax bill next year.

•Good point, I didn't think about taxes. Is that optional?

•Yes, it's optional but highly recommended. You can change this setting anytime in your Washington ESD account.

Anyone know if the benefit amount changes if you work part-time while collecting? Like if I pick up some freelance work?

Astrid Bergström
•Yes, if you earn more than your weekly benefit amount, your UI payment gets reduced. You need to report all earnings on your weekly claim.

MoonlightSonata
•Ah ok, so it's not dollar-for-dollar reduction?
0 coins
Astrid Bergström
•Right, there's a small earnings disregard - you can earn up to 1/4 of your weekly benefit without any reduction.

The whole system is confusing honestly. I've been trying to get someone at Washington ESD on the phone for days to ask about my benefit calculation. Might try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned.

•Yeah definitely try it. Saved me so much frustration compared to calling directly.

•I used them too when I had questions about my adjudication. Much easier than the regular phone number.

Quick question - do they pay benefits to your bank account or send a debit card?
0 coins
Omar Farouk
•You can choose either direct deposit to your bank account or they'll send you a debit card. Direct deposit is faster.

Luca Ricci
•Perfect, thanks! I'll set up direct deposit when I file.

Does anyone know if there are different benefit amounts for different types of unemployment? Like if you're on standby vs regular UI?
0 coins
Astrid Bergström
•Standby benefits use the same calculation as regular UI. The difference is in the work search requirements, not the benefit amount.

•Got it, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!

I was surprised by how much paperwork they want when you first apply. Make sure you have your Social Security card and ID ready, plus all your employment history for the past 18 months.

•Good tip! I have most of that stuff but should probably gather it all in one place first.

The benefit estimator on Washington ESD's website is pretty accurate but it can be hard to find. It's buried in their online services section somewhere.

•I think you access it through your SecureAccess Washington account once you start the application process.

Just want to add that if you're getting benefits, you HAVE to keep doing your weekly claims every single week, even if you think you might not qualify that week. Missing even one week can mess up your whole claim.

Ravi Patel
•Really? Even if I work a full week that week?
0 coins
Andre Dupont
•Yep! You still file the weekly claim and report your earnings. They'll calculate if you get any benefits that week or not.

Omar Farouk
•This is correct. The weekly claim filing keeps your claim active even if you don't receive payment for that particular week.

Washington state benefits are actually pretty decent compared to some other states. My sister lives in Florida and gets way less there.

•Yeah Washington has one of the higher maximum benefits in the country. We're lucky here.

One last thing - if anyone runs into issues with their claim or has questions about their benefit amount, that Claimyr service really does work. I was skeptical at first but it beat spending hours on hold. They called me back within a few hours and I got connected to an actual Washington ESD representative who could look up my account.

•Same here - was way better than trying to get through the regular way. Wish I'd known about it sooner.
