How much do you get paid unemployment benefits in Washington ESD weekly?
I'm trying to figure out what my weekly benefit amount will be before I file my claim with Washington ESD. I've been working full time for about 2 years making around $52,000 annually. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? I've heard it's based on your highest earning quarter but I'm not sure how that works exactly. Also wondering if there's a maximum amount they'll pay out weekly in Washington state?

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount (WBA) using your highest earning quarter from your base period. They take that quarter's earnings, divide by 26, then you get roughly 47-50% of that amount. The maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is $999 per week.

•Thanks! So if my highest quarter was like $14,000, I'd get around $260-270 per week?

•That sounds about right, maybe slightly higher. The exact formula is on the Washington ESD website under benefit calculator.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your benefit amount, I discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. I used it when I couldn't get answers about my adjudication status and it was worth it.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already stressed about money.

•They focus on getting you connected rather than the cost. When you're waiting weeks for answers it's often worth it to just get through to someone who can help.

IMPORTANT: Your benefit amount also depends on if you have any disqualifying factors. If you quit your job or were fired for misconduct, you might not qualify at all. Make sure you understand the eligibility requirements before assuming you'll get benefits.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing so I should be good there.

•Perfect, that's a qualifying separation. You should be eligible for the full benefit amount then.

they take forever to process claims now!! been waiting 3 weeks just to get my first payment and still in adjudication. the benefit amount doesn't matter if they never approve your claim

•Same here! My claim has been pending forever. So frustrating.

•Adjudication can take 4-6 weeks unfortunately. Keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending.

Update: I found the benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website. Looks like based on my wages I'd get around $285 per week. That's actually better than I expected.

•Nice! That should help cover some expenses while you job search.

•Remember you still have to do the job search requirements to keep getting paid. 3 job contacts per week minimum.

Is the $999 maximum really accurate? That seems high compared to other states I've lived in.

•Yes, Washington has one of the higher maximum benefit amounts in the country. It's tied to the state's average wage.

•Cost of living here is insane though so $999 barely covers rent in Seattle area

Don't forget about taxes! They don't automatically withhold federal taxes from unemployment benefits. You can request it or you'll owe at tax time.

•Good point, I'll make sure to set up withholding when I file.

•Yeah learned that one the hard way last year. Owed like $800 in taxes on my unemployment.

Anyone know how they handle partial unemployment? Like if you get reduced hours instead of being completely laid off?

Andre Dupont
•You can still qualify for partial benefits. They deduct a portion of your earnings from your weekly benefit amount. There's a formula for it.

•I was getting partial benefits for a while. As long as you make less than your weekly benefit amount you can still get something.

The whole system is confusing. I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days to ask about my benefit calculation and can never get through. The phone just rings busy or hangs up.

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. The phone system is impossible to navigate on your own. I probably would have given up without help getting through.

•I tried calling at 8am sharp when they open and still couldn't get through. It's ridiculous.

Quick question - do bonuses count toward your quarterly earnings for the benefit calculation?
0 coins
Andre Dupont
•Yes, bonuses are considered wages and count toward your base period earnings that determine your benefit amount.

•That's good to know! I got a decent bonus last year so that might bump up my weekly amount.

For those still struggling to reach Washington ESD agents, I had success with that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Actually got through to discuss my benefit calculation questions. Made the whole process much less stressful.

•Yes, the agent was very helpful and explained exactly how my weekly benefit was calculated. Worth it to get accurate info directly from ESD.

remember that your benefit year lasts 52 weeks but you only get paid for a maximum of 26 weeks (or less depending on the unemployment rate). don't expect benefits to last forever

•Good reminder. Hopefully I'll find something before then anyway.

Does anyone know if overtime hours affect your benefit calculation? I worked a lot of OT in my highest quarter.

Andre Dupont
•Overtime wages count just like regular wages for benefit calculations. All reported earnings in your base period quarters are included.

Oliver Zimmermann
•That OT will definitely help boost your weekly benefit amount then!

The benefit amount is one thing but actually getting approved is another story. Make sure you understand all the eligibility requirements before getting your hopes up about any specific dollar amount.

•Yeah I'm trying to learn about all the requirements. The job search stuff seems pretty strict.

I'm getting $445/week after working in tech for 3 years. The calculation seems fair based on what I was making. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week.

•What happens if you miss filing a weekly claim?

•You can usually file late but you might not get paid for that week. Better to just stay on top of it every Sunday.

Thanks everyone for all the info! I feel much more prepared to file my claim now. Sounds like I can expect around $285/week based on my earnings history.
