How much do i make on unemployment in Washington - confused about benefit amounts

Filed my first unemployment claim last week and I'm confused about how much I'll actually get. The Washington ESD website shows my weekly benefit amount but I don't understand if that's before or after taxes? Also do I get paid every week or every two weeks? My previous job paid biweekly so I'm not sure what to expect. Really need to know so I can budget for my rent and bills.

Your weekly benefit amount is what you'll receive before taxes are taken out. Washington ESD pays weekly, not biweekly. You can choose to have taxes withheld or not when you file your weekly claims.

Oh okay so if it says $387 that's what I get each week before taxes? Should I have them take out taxes or just deal with it at the end of the year?

0 coins

Yes exactly, $387 before taxes. I'd recommend having them withhold 10% for federal taxes to avoid owing money later. You can change this anytime in your account.

0 coins

The amount is based on your earnings from the last 5 quarters. Washington ESD looks at your highest earning quarter and calculates about 60-70% of what you made weekly during that time, up to the maximum benefit amount.

0 coins

That makes sense why mine is $387 then. I was making about $550 a week at my last job before they laid me off.

Just wanted to mention that if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your benefit amount, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me connect with an agent quickly. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

Is that legit? Seems too good to be true given how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD these days.

0 coins

Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying to call for days.

make sure you understand the maximum benefit amount for washington state changes each year. For 2025 the max weekly benefit is $999 but most people don't qualify for that much

0 coins

Good to know there's a max. My amount seems reasonable compared to what I was earning.

0 coins

Don't forget you have to file your weekly claim every week to get paid! Even if nothing has changed in your situation. Miss a week and you won't get paid for that week.

0 coins

When do I file the weekly claims? Is there a specific day or time?

0 coins

You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. I always do mine Sunday morning so I don't forget. The system is usually less busy early in the morning too.

0 coins

Also remember that if you work any hours during a week you need to report that income. It might reduce your weekly benefit but you can still get partial unemployment if you're working part time.

0 coins

What if I just work like one day as temp work? Do I still need to report that?

0 coins

Yes absolutely report ALL work and income. Washington ESD will find out anyway and you don't want to deal with an overpayment later.

0 coins

The whole system is confusing honestly. I've been on unemployment twice and still don't fully understand how they calculate everything.

0 coins

It's definitely not the most user-friendly system. The key things are file weekly, report all income, and keep doing your job search activities.

0 coins

Just a heads up that your benefit amount might be different if you were working multiple jobs or had irregular hours. Washington ESD sometimes needs additional documentation to verify your earnings.

0 coins

I only had one job for the past two years so hopefully that makes it simpler.

0 coins

One thing that caught me off guard was that unemployment benefits are taxable income federally. So factor that into your budgeting.

0 coins

Wait so I have to pay taxes on unemployment money? That seems weird since I'm unemployed.

0 coins

Unfortunately yes, it's considered income by the IRS. That's why having taxes withheld is usually a good idea.

0 coins

If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your specific benefit calculation, definitely try that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Much easier than spending all day redialing the regular number.

0 coins

I might have to try that. Been trying to reach them for three days about a question on my claim.

0 coins

Remember the money gets direct deposited if you set that up, otherwise they mail you a debit card. Direct deposit is faster and more reliable.

0 coins

How long does it take to get the first payment usually?

0 coins

If everything goes smoothly with your claim, usually about a week after you file your first weekly claim. Sometimes longer if they need to verify information.

0 coins

washington esd also has a benefit calculator on their website but it's not always accurate especially if you have complicated work history

0 coins

I'll check that out, thanks!

0 coins

Don't panic if your first payment is different than expected. Sometimes there are adjustments or they backdate things. Just keep filing your weekly claims consistently.

0 coins

Good to know, I was worried if anything seemed off with the amounts.

0 coins

The whole UI system in this state is so frustrating. At least the payments are weekly instead of biweekly like some states.

0 coins

True, weekly payments do help with budgeting when money is tight.

0 coins

Make sure you understand your base year too - that's what they use to calculate your benefits. It's not necessarily your most recent year of work.

0 coins

What do you mean by base year?

0 coins

It's the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed. So if you filed in January 2025, your base year would be October 2023 through September 2024.

0 coins

Also keep in mind you can only collect unemployment for a maximum of 26 weeks in Washington unless there are special extensions.

0 coins

Hopefully I'll find something before then but good to know there's a limit.

0 coins

pro tip: set up direct deposit and automatic tax withholding right away. saves you headaches later

0 coins

I'll do that when I file my first weekly claim this Sunday.

0 coins

The amount you get also depends on whether you quit or were laid off. If you quit without good cause you might not get anything.

0 coins

I was laid off due to company downsizing so I should be okay there.

0 coins

Just remember to keep track of your job search activities too. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they do audit people randomly.

0 coins

What counts as a job search activity?

0 coins

Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, informational interviews. Keep detailed records of everything you do.

0 coins

One more plug for Claimyr if you run into any issues or questions about your benefits. Really saved me a lot of frustration when I had questions about my claim status.

0 coins

I'm definitely bookmarking that site. The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely terrible.
