How much do I have to make to qualify for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?

I'm trying to figure out if I'll qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I've been working part-time for the last 18 months at two different jobs - one paid $14/hour for about 20 hours a week, and another paid $16/hour for about 15 hours a week. I'm not sure if I made enough money to qualify or how they calculate the earnings requirement. Does anyone know what the minimum earnings are to be eligible for UI benefits in Washington? I'm worried I might not have worked enough hours or made enough money to qualify.

Washington ESD looks at your earnings during your base period, which is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. You need to have earned at least $1,000 in your base period AND have earnings in at least two quarters of your base period to qualify.

Thanks! So if I file in January 2025, they'd look at my earnings from January 2024 through September 2024?

0 coins

Exactly! And your weekly benefit amount is based on your highest earning quarter during that base period.

0 coins

i think theres also a requirement about earning like 680 times your weekly benefit amount or something? its confusing af

0 coins

You're thinking of the alternate base period calculation. There are actually multiple ways Washington ESD can calculate eligibility - they'll use whichever method works in your favor.

0 coins

oh ok that makes more sense, i was getting stressed thinking i didnt qualify

I had a similar situation last year and couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to check my eligibility. Kept getting busy signals and hang-ups when I tried calling. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent who could look up my earnings history and confirm I qualified. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

That sounds helpful! Did they charge you a lot to use it?

0 coins

They don't publish pricing on the site, but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of calling for weeks with no luck. The agent was able to pull up my earnings and explain exactly how they calculated my base period.

0 coins

Wait, you have to pay someone to talk to Washington ESD? That seems sketchy.

0 coins

Not to talk to Washington ESD directly - Claimyr just helps you get through the phone system faster. Once you're connected, you're talking to actual Washington ESD staff.

0 coins

The monetary eligibility is just one part though. You also have to be able and available for work, actively seeking work, and meet the job search requirements. Don't forget about that part!

0 coins

Good point! I'm definitely able to work full-time now. What are the current job search requirements?

0 coins

You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities. The requirements are on the Washington ESD website.

0 coins

ugh the whole system is so complicated. why cant they just tell you straight up if you qualify or not without having to do math

0 coins

I agree it's confusing! The reason they use quarters is to make sure you have a recent, stable work history rather than just one big paycheck.

0 coins

i guess that makes sense but still annoying when youre stressed about money

0 coins

Based on what you described, it sounds like you probably do qualify. Working 35 hours a week at those wages for 18 months should easily put you over the $1,000 minimum. The bigger question is what your weekly benefit amount would be - that's calculated as about 3.85% of your highest quarter earnings.

0 coins

Oh that's reassuring! I was worried I hadn't worked enough. So if I made like $4,000 in my highest quarter, my weekly benefit would be around $154?

0 coins

That math sounds about right! Plus you might qualify for additional benefits if you have dependents.

0 coins

Don't forget they also look at WHY you're unemployed. If you quit without good cause or got fired for misconduct, you might not qualify even if you meet the earnings requirements.

0 coins

I was laid off due to budget cuts, so I think I should be okay on that front.

0 coins

Layoffs are usually straightforward for eligibility. Just make sure you file as soon as possible since benefits don't start until you actually file your claim.

0 coins

has anyone tried filing online vs calling? wondering if the online system can tell you right away if you qualify

0 coins

The online system at Washington ESD will let you file your initial claim and should tell you if you're monetarily eligible pretty quickly. Much easier than trying to call.

0 coins

cool, ill try that first before dealing with phone calls

0 coins

wait so the base period thing - what if i just started a new job like 2 months ago that pays way more? do they count that?

0 coins

Probably not in your regular base period, but Washington ESD can use an alternate base period that includes more recent wages if it helps you qualify or get higher benefits.

0 coins

ok good to know, this stuff is so confusing lol

0 coins

Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful. I think I'm going to try filing online first and see what happens. If I run into issues I might check out that Claimyr thing someone mentioned.

0 coins

Good luck! The online system is usually pretty straightforward for basic claims.

0 coins

Just remember to file your weekly claims on time once you get approved - that's super important!

0 coins

I filed last month and was surprised at how much I qualified for. Turns out I was overthinking the earnings requirement - if you've been working steadily for over a year you're probably fine.

0 coins

That's good to hear! How long did it take to get your first payment?

0 coins

About 2 weeks after I filed, but I had to serve a waiting week first. So really 3 weeks total.

0 coins

the waiting week thing is so stupid. like you need money NOW not in 3 weeks

0 coins

I think they eliminated the waiting week during COVID but it came back. It's frustrating when you're already stressed about finances.

0 coins

exactly! just one more way to make it harder on people who are already struggling

0 coins

Make sure you have all your employer information ready when you file. They'll need names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation for each job in your base period.

0 coins

Good tip! I should probably gather all that info before I start the application.

0 coins

Definitely makes the process go smoother. Also have your Social Security card and ID ready.

0 coins

i wish washington esd would just send you a letter telling you your earnings history like some other states do. would make this so much easier

0 coins

You can actually request your earnings history from Washington ESD, but it takes time. The online system shows some of it when you file your claim though.

0 coins

oh really? i didnt know that, thanks

0 coins

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier - they were really helpful when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD on my own. If anyone else is having trouble reaching someone, it might be worth checking out.

0 coins

How long did it take them to get you connected to someone?

0 coins

Way faster than trying on my own. Instead of calling for hours, I was talking to an agent within like 20 minutes.

0 coins

The earnings requirement seems scary but honestly most people who worked regularly qualify. The real challenge is all the other requirements like job searching and filing your weekly claims correctly.

0 coins

That's reassuring! I've been so focused on whether I earned enough that I hadn't really thought about the ongoing requirements.

0 coins

Yeah, the initial qualification is usually the easy part. It's staying compliant with all the rules that trips people up.

0 coins

dont forget about taxes! unemployment benefits are taxable income so you might want to have them withhold taxes or set money aside

0 coins

Good point! I didn't think about that. Can you have them withhold taxes automatically?

0 coins

yeah when you file your claim theres an option to have 10% withheld for federal taxes

0 coins

Based on working 35 hours a week for 18 months, you should definitely qualify. That's way more than the minimum requirements. Your weekly benefit amount will depend on which quarter you earned the most in.

0 coins

Thanks! I think my earnings were pretty consistent across quarters, so hopefully it works out to a decent amount.

0 coins

Even if they were consistent, 35 hours a week at those wages should give you a reasonable weekly benefit. Good luck with your claim!

0 coins

just file already! youre overthinking it. worst case they say no and you appeal or try again with different info

0 coins

You're right, I should just go for it. Thanks for the push!

0 coins

no problem, i did the same thing and stressed for weeks before filing. turned out fine

0 coins

One last thing - make sure you understand the difference between your base period and benefit year. The base period determines if you qualify and how much you get, but your benefit year is when you can actually collect benefits.

0 coins

I'll make sure to read up on that. There's definitely a lot to learn about this process!

0 coins

It's confusing at first but once you get through the initial claim it becomes more routine. The weekly claims are pretty straightforward.
