How long you need to work to get Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I've been working part-time jobs for the past 8 months and just got laid off. I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I know there's some kind of work requirement but I can't find clear info on their website. Does anyone know exactly how long you need to work to get unemployment? I've worked at three different places this year - a restaurant, retail store, and warehouse job. Total I probably made around $12,000. Is that enough or do I need to have worked longer?

You need to meet what's called the 'base period' requirement. In Washington, you need to have earned at least $1,005 in your highest quarter during your base period, and your total base period wages need to be at least 1.5 times your highest quarter earnings. Your base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file.

•That's confusing - what exactly is a quarter? Like 3 months?

Mateo Gonzalez
•Yes, exactly. A quarter is 3 months. So Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, Oct-Dec. If you file in January 2025, your base period would typically be Jan 2024 through Dec 2024.

The work history requirement isn't really about time worked, it's about wages earned. You could work one week and make $5000 and qualify, or work 6 months making $50/week and not qualify. Based on your $12k total, you should be fine as long as it's spread across the right quarters.

•Oh that makes more sense! I made most of my money in the last 6 months so hopefully that works out.

•Just make sure Washington ESD can verify all your wages. Sometimes if employers don't report properly it can mess up your claim.

I had a similar situation last year and kept getting stuck trying to reach someone at Washington ESD to verify my earnings. Spent weeks calling that main number and either getting busy signals or being on hold for hours just to get disconnected. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real person at Washington ESD in like 20 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it some kind of scam?

•It's legit. They basically navigate the phone system for you and get you connected to Washington ESD staff. I was skeptical too but it actually worked when nothing else did.

The system is ridiculous honestly. I worked for 10 months straight and still had issues because one of my employers didn't report my wages correctly. Had to jump through hoops to get it sorted out.

•How did you fix the wage reporting issue? I'm worried about that now.

•Had to get paystubs and tax documents from the employer and submit them to Washington ESD. Took forever.

•That's why it's good to keep all your paystubs. Makes the verification process much easier if there are discrepancies.

Don't forget you also need to be able and available for work, and actively looking for work. It's not just about the wage requirement.

MoonlightSonata
•What does 'actively looking' mean exactly? Do I need to apply to a certain number of jobs per week?

•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. Washington ESD can audit your job search activities.

I think there's also something about having to work in at least 2 quarters? Not sure about that one though.

Mateo Gonzalez
•No, that's not correct. You just need sufficient wages in your base period. Could all be from one quarter if it meets the requirements.

•Oh okay, I must have been thinking of something else. Thanks for the correction.

Pro tip: file your claim as soon as you're unemployed even if you're not sure you qualify. Washington ESD will determine eligibility and you don't want to lose out on potential benefits while you're figuring things out.

•Good point. I was waiting to make sure I qualified but maybe I should just apply now.

Andre Dupont
•Exactly. Better to have them tell you that you don't qualify than to miss out on benefits you're entitled to.

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator that can give you an estimate of what you might receive if you qualify. Might be worth checking out.

•I'll look for that, thanks! Do you remember where on their site it was?

Zoe Papadakis
•I think it's under the 'File a Claim' section but their website layout changes sometimes. Just search for 'benefit calculator' on their site.

Had to deal with Washington ESD wage verification issues too. The phone system is absolutely terrible - you can spend entire days trying to get through. That Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier actually sounds useful for situations like that.

•Yeah I've been seeing more people mention services like that. The phone system really is broken.

•It's frustrating because you need answers to move forward with your claim but can't reach anyone to get help.

Just want to add that if you worked for temp agencies or gig work, make sure all that income gets counted too. Sometimes it doesn't show up automatically in their system.

MoonlightSonata
•One of my jobs was through a temp agency actually. How do I make sure that gets included?

Mei Chen
•When you file your claim, list all your employers including the temp agency. If the wages don't show up, you'll need to provide documentation like paystubs or W-2s.

The waiting period after you file can be nerve-wracking too. Don't panic if it takes a few weeks to hear back - that's normal for Washington ESD processing times.

•How long should I expect to wait before I know if I'm approved?

Liam O'Sullivan
•Usually 2-3 weeks for a straightforward claim, but can be longer if they need to verify wages or if there are other issues.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while your initial claim is being processed. You can't go back and claim those weeks later if you miss them.

MoonlightSonata
•Wait, I have to file weekly claims before I'm even approved?
0 coins
Amara Okonkwo
•Yes, you file weekly claims for every week you want benefits, starting the week after you file your initial claim. Even if your claim is still pending.

This whole thread is helpful. I'm in a similar situation and was totally confused about the requirements. Sounds like I probably qualify based on my wages from last year.

•Same here. I've been putting off filing because I wasn't sure about the work requirements.

•Yeah, I think the key is just to file and let them determine eligibility rather than trying to figure it all out ourselves.

One thing to watch out for - if you quit your last job instead of being laid off, that can affect your eligibility. Washington ESD looks at the reason for separation from work.

MoonlightSonata
•I was laid off so hopefully that's not an issue. But good to know for others reading this.

Dylan Hughes
•Yeah, being laid off is usually not a problem. It's when people quit without good cause that eligibility gets complicated.

If anyone runs into issues reaching Washington ESD by phone, I also had success with that Claimyr service. It's kind of annoying that we need third-party help to contact our own unemployment office, but it works when their regular phone system doesn't.

Sofia Rodriguez
•How much does something like that cost?

NightOwl42
•I don't remember the exact cost but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of wasting days trying to get through on my own.

Thanks everyone for all the info! This has been really helpful. I think I'm going to file my claim tomorrow and see what happens.

•Good luck! I'm planning to file mine this week too after reading all this.

•Thanks! Hopefully we both get approved without too much hassle.

Just as a final note - keep track of all your job applications and work search activities from day one. Washington ESD can audit your job search compliance at any time and you'll need documentation.

MoonlightSonata
•Good reminder. I'll start keeping a spreadsheet of my applications.

•That's smart. Having good records makes everything easier if they ever question your job search efforts.

The whole unemployment system is so confusing but this thread cleared up a lot of questions I had. Appreciate everyone sharing their experiences.

•Agreed. Much more helpful than trying to navigate the Washington ESD website alone.

•Definitely. Real people sharing actual experiences is way more valuable than reading bureaucratic language on government websites.
