How long to receive unemployment benefits after Washington ESD approval?

I just got my Washington ESD claim approved after waiting 3 weeks in adjudication. My account shows I'm eligible for $612 per week. How long does it typically take to actually receive the first payment? I filed my first weekly claim yesterday and I'm really hoping it doesn't take another few weeks. Bills are piling up and I need to know what to expect.

Usually takes 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim for the payment to hit your account. Make sure you have direct deposit set up in your SAW account or it could take longer with a debit card.

I do have direct deposit set up. So if I filed yesterday (Tuesday) I should see something by Friday?

Yuki Sato

•

Yeah that sounds about right. Sometimes it's faster, sometimes it takes the full 3 days.

congrats on getting approved! my claim has been stuck in adjudication for 5 weeks now and im going crazy trying to get through to someone at washington esd

That's awful! Have you tried calling first thing in the morning? That's when I had the most luck.

I was in the same boat last month - couldn't get through no matter what time I called. Finally used this service called Claimyr that automatically calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an agent. Found it at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Got through within 2 hours instead of spending days trying.

really? that actually works? ive been calling for weeks and either get busy signals or get hung up on

The timing can vary depending on when you file. If you file your weekly claim on Sunday (the first day you can file) you'll usually get paid by Wednesday. Filing later in the week means longer wait times.

0 coins

This is good to know! I always file on Mondays because that's when I remember but maybe I should switch to Sundays.

Yeah definitely file as early as possible. The system processes them in order so earlier filing = earlier payment.

FINALLY someone with good news! I've been waiting 6 weeks for my adjudication to finish and Washington ESD keeps telling me "we're working on it" when I manage to get through. Did they tell you what the holdup was?

0 coins

Ethan Wilson

•

They said it was just a routine verification of my separation from my last employer. Apparently my previous job took forever to respond to their request for information.

Ugh that's probably what's happening to me too. My last boss was pretty vindictive when I quit.

First payment usually comes within a week but make sure you're doing your job search requirements or they can hold up future payments. You need 3 job contacts per week and they're pretty strict about it now.

0 coins

Ethan Wilson

•

Yeah I've been keeping track of my job search activities. Do I need to report them when I file my weekly claim?

0 coins

Mei Liu

•

You report them in your weekly claim filing. Make sure you have employer names, contact info, and dates. They can audit your records anytime.

Just remembered - if this is your first time getting unemployment benefits, there might be a waiting week that you don't get paid for. But if you've been approved that probably already happened during adjudication.

•

What's a waiting week? This is my first time dealing with unemployment.

0 coins

Yuki Sato

•

It's basically the first week you file that you don't get paid for. Think of it as a deductible. But since you were in adjudication for 3 weeks, your waiting week probably already passed.

0 coins

Wait I thought they got rid of the waiting week during COVID?

0 coins

Yuki Sato

•

No, the waiting week is still there. They suspended it temporarily during the pandemic but it came back.

Pro tip: set up text notifications in your SAW account so you get alerts when payments are processed. Really helpful for peace of mind.

0 coins

Ethan Wilson

•

Good idea! I'll go do that right now.

0 coins

i remember my first payment took like 5 days but that was in 2023 so maybe its faster now? also make sure you file every week even if you dont get paid right away or you could lose benefits

0 coins

Ethan Wilson

•

Yeah I plan to file every week. Don't want to mess anything up after waiting so long for approval.

Smart! I missed one week early on and it was a nightmare to get it sorted out.

The payment timing also depends on your bank. Some banks process ACH transfers faster than others. Credit unions are usually pretty quick.

Ethan Wilson

I use BECU so hopefully they're fast with processing.

BECU is usually pretty good with unemployment payments. You should see it within 2-3 days.

update: tried that claimyr thing someone mentioned and actually got through to washington esd today! they said my adjudication should be done by next week. worth the try if youre stuck like i was

Andre Dubois

•

Awesome! Glad it worked for you. Sometimes you just need to actually talk to a human to get things moving.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? I've been trying to get through for weeks too.

0 coins

Carmen Flores

•

honestly dont remember the exact cost but it was worth it to finally get answers instead of calling hundreds of times

0 coins

Once you start getting payments, they come like clockwork as long as you file on time. I've been getting mine for 8 weeks now and it's always the same schedule.

0 coins

Ethan Wilson

•

That's reassuring! I was worried about payments being inconsistent.

0 coins

Nope, very consistent once you're in the system. Just don't miss any weekly filings.

Make sure you're checking your account regularly for any correspondence from Washington ESD. Sometimes they'll send you additional forms or requests that can delay payments if you don't respond quickly.

0 coins

Ethan Wilson

•

Good point. I'll make sure to check my SAW account daily.

0 coins

Dylan Cooper

•

Yeah they don't always send email notifications so you have to stay on top of it yourself.

anyone else think $612 a week is pretty good? thats like $31k a year which isnt bad for not working

0 coins

Ethan Wilson

•

It's based on what I was making at my last job. Plus I'm actively looking for work, it's not like I'm just sitting around.

0 coins

Unemployment is insurance that we pay into when we work. It's not free money.

Sofia Perez

•

fair point i guess just seems like a lot to me

0 coins

Don't forget about taxes! Unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can have taxes withheld or pay quarterly estimates to avoid a big bill next year.

0 coins

Ethan Wilson

•

Oh right, I should probably set up tax withholding. How do I do that?

0 coins

You can set it up in your SAW account under payment preferences. I think it's 10% federal withholding.

The fact that you waited 3 weeks for adjudication is actually not too bad. I've seen people wait 2-3 months. Washington ESD is understaffed and overworked.

0 coins

Ethan Wilson

•

Yeah I was prepared for it to take longer based on what I read online. I feel lucky it was only 3 weeks.

My neighbor waited 8 weeks for his adjudication last year. The system is definitely backed up.

Once you get your first payment, make sure to keep detailed records of everything - payment amounts, dates, job search activities. If there's ever a problem or audit, you'll need all that documentation.

0 coins

Ethan Wilson

•

Good advice. I'll start a spreadsheet to track everything.

Smart! Organization is key when dealing with unemployment benefits.

I learned this the hard way when they asked me to verify my job search activities from 6 months ago. Luckily I had kept records.

Hope you get your payment soon! It's such a relief when that first direct deposit hits your account after all the waiting and stress.

Thanks! I'll definitely update this thread when I get my first payment.

just wanted to add that if you need help reaching washington esd again for any reason that claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. used it myself when i had payment issues and got connected same day

Good to know! I'll bookmark that in case I run into problems later.

Yeah definitely keep it handy. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting hung up on.

Update us when you get your first payment! Always nice to hear success stories on here since there's usually so much frustration with the unemployment system.

•

Will do! Fingers crossed it comes through by Friday like others have said.

🤞 Hope it works out smoothly for you!

The whole unemployment process is so stressful. Even when you get approved you're still worried about whether payments will actually come through. The system really needs to be more user-friendly.

0 coins

Ethan Wilson

•

Totally agree. The uncertainty is the worst part. You'd think after approval everything would be straightforward.

At least Washington ESD has improved from a few years ago. It used to be even worse if you can believe that.
