How long to be employed for unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
I'm trying to figure out the minimum work requirement for Washington ESD unemployment benefits. I've been working part-time at a retail job for about 8 months now, averaging 25 hours per week at $16/hour. My hours just got cut to basically nothing and I'm wondering if I qualify for UI benefits. Does anyone know how long you need to be employed before you can file a claim? I've heard different things about needing to work a full year vs just a few quarters. Really stressed about this since rent is due soon.

You don't need to work a full year! Washington ESD uses a base period system - they look at the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. You need to have earned at least $1,000 total in your base period AND earned at least $200 in each of at least 2 quarters. With 8 months of work, you should definitely meet the requirements.

•Thank you! That's a relief. So they don't count the current quarter I'm in when calculating this?

Eloise Kendrick
•Correct, they use completed quarters only. Your current quarter doesn't count in the base period calculation.

8 months should be plenty. I qualified with just 6 months of work last year. The tricky part is actually getting through to file your claim - the Washington ESD phone system is a nightmare.

•Oh no, is it really that hard to get through? I was planning to call tomorrow morning.

•Yeah, expect to call dozens of times. I spent 3 days trying to reach someone when I had questions about my claim status.

Actually had a similar situation and found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Saved me hours of calling - check out claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Basically they handle the calling for you and connect you when an agent picks up.

•Is this legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly.

•Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Used it twice now when I needed to check on my adjudication status.

•I've heard mixed things about these callback services. Has anyone else used this one?

The monetary eligibility requirements are: minimum $1,000 earned in base period, earnings in at least 2 quarters of at least $200 each, and your total base period wages must be at least 1.25 times your highest quarter wages. Most people with steady part-time work for 6+ months easily qualify.

•This is super helpful! I definitely earned more than $1,000 over 8 months and worked in multiple quarters.

•Wait what's this 1.25 times thing? I never heard of that requirement before.

•It's to ensure you have sufficient work history. If your highest quarter was $2,000, your total base period needs to be at least $2,500.

ugh the washington esd system is so confusing!! i worked for like 10 months and still got confused about whether i qualified. ended up just filing online and letting them figure it out lol

•How long did it take to hear back after you filed online?

•took about 2 weeks to get my determination letter but that was during busy season

Make sure you understand the difference between being laid off vs. quitting too. If your hours were cut involuntarily, that's considered a reduction in work which can qualify you. But if you quit because of the hour reduction, it gets more complicated.

•They cut my hours, I didn't quit. My manager said business is slow so they're reducing everyone's shifts.

Liv Park
•Perfect, that should qualify as involuntary reduction in work hours. Make sure to document that when you file.

I'm in a similar boat - been working for 7 months but worried I won't qualify because I switched jobs once during that time. Does job hopping affect eligibility?
0 coins
Eloise Kendrick
•No, switching jobs doesn't hurt your eligibility as long as you meet the wage requirements across all your employers in the base period.

•Oh good! I was worried they'd penalize me for not staying at one place.

Just wanted to follow up on the calling thing - I actually tried that Claimyr service mentioned earlier and it worked great. Got connected in like 20 minutes instead of spending all day redialing.

•How much does it cost? I'm already tight on money.

•They don't charge upfront, it's pretty reasonable for what you get. Way better than wasting entire days trying to get through.

Another thing to consider - when you file, they'll ask about your reason for unemployment. 'Lack of work' or 'reduction in hours' are both valid reasons that shouldn't cause issues with your claim.

•Good to know! I was wondering how to explain the situation when I file.

•Just be honest and straightforward. Washington ESD deals with hour reductions all the time, especially in retail.

File as soon as possible! There's a waiting week but benefits are backdated to when you first became unemployed or had your hours reduced. Don't wait thinking your situation might improve.

•I didn't know there was a waiting week. Does that mean I won't get paid for the first week?
0 coins
Carmella Fromis
•Exactly, the first week is unpaid but every week after that counts if you're eligible and file your weekly claims.

The Washington ESD website actually has a calculator to estimate your benefit amount based on your wages. Might be worth checking before you file so you know what to expect.

JaylinCharles
•I'll look for that calculator, thanks! Want to make sure the benefits will actually help with my bills.

•It's under the 'Unemployment Benefits' section on their main page. Pretty easy to use.

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSourceWA and do job search activities once you start receiving benefits. They have specific requirements about how many jobs you need to apply for each week.

JaylinCharles
•How many job applications do you need to do per week?
0 coins
Ellie Simpson
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week, but that includes applications, networking, job fairs, etc. Check the current requirements when you file.

Make sure you have all your employer information ready when you file - names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. Having everything organized makes the process much smoother.

•Good point, I should gather all that info tonight so I'm ready to file tomorrow.

•Exactly! Also have your Social Security number and any pay stubs handy just in case.

One more tip - if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason, that's when those callback services really come in handy. Regular adjudication can take weeks and calling is often the only way to get updates.

JaylinCharles
•What causes a claim to go into adjudication?
0 coins
Raúl Mora
•Could be anything - they might need to verify your employment dates, reason for separation, or just random quality control. Most resolve quickly but some take forever without follow-up.

Freya Collins
•This is exactly when I used Claimyr - my claim was stuck in adjudication for 3 weeks and I couldn't get through to find out why.

With 8 months of steady part-time work, you're definitely good on the work requirement. I had less than that and still qualified. The hardest part is just navigating the system once you file.

•Thanks everyone! Feeling much more confident about filing now. Really appreciate all the help.

Just remember to file your weekly claims every week even if your payment is delayed or you're waiting on adjudication. Missing weekly claims can cause problems later.

JaylinCharles
•How do you file the weekly claims? Is it online?

Evelyn Kim
•Yes, through the Washington ESD website. You can do it online or by phone, but online is much easier.

Washington ESD has really improved their online system in recent years. Filing the initial claim is pretty straightforward now, though getting help when you need it is still challenging.

JaylinCharles
•That's good to hear! I was worried it would be super complicated.

•The filing part is easy - it's getting answers to questions that's hard. That's why people use those callback services.

For what it's worth, I used to work at a temp agency and we had people qualify for unemployment with just 4-5 months of work history all the time. Your 8 months should be more than enough.

JaylinCharles
•That's really reassuring! I've been so worried about not having worked long enough.

•Washington state is actually pretty generous with eligibility compared to some other states. You should be fine.
