How long does someone have to work for you to collect unemployment in Washington?

My sister just got laid off from her job at a restaurant where she worked for about 8 months. She's wondering if she can file for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I thought you had to work for a full year to qualify but I'm not sure about the exact requirements. Does anyone know how long you need to work before you can collect unemployment in Washington state? She's never filed before and doesn't want to waste time if she doesn't qualify.

The work requirement isn't about how long you worked at one job, it's about how much you earned during your base period. Washington ESD looks at your earnings from the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. You need at least $1,000 in earnings during your base period to qualify.

Oh that's confusing. So if she made more than $1,000 total in the past year she should be good?

0 coins

Not exactly - it has to be within the specific quarters that make up her base period. She should check her account on SecureAccess Washington to see her wage history.

I think there's also a requirement about working in at least two different quarters during the base period? My coworker got denied because all her earnings were from one quarter only.

Yes, that's correct. You need earnings in at least 2 quarters of your base period, and your total base period wages need to be at least 1.5 times your highest quarter earnings.

This is getting complicated. Is there an easier way to figure out if she qualifies?

honestly the Washington ESD website has a tool to check eligibility but good luck getting through to talk to someone if you have questions. I've been trying to call for weeks about my claim and can't get through

Have you tried using Claimyr? I found out about it from someone on here and it actually got me through to a Washington ESD agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Never heard of that but I'll check it out. Anything's better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

Wait so if someone worked part time for 8 months they might not qualify? That seems unfair especially if they got laid off through no fault of their own.

It depends on how much they earned and when they earned it. Part-time work can definitely qualify if you meet the earnings requirements. The system is designed to ensure people contributed enough to the unemployment insurance system.

I guess that makes sense but it's still frustrating for people who need help.

Your sister should definitely apply even if she's not sure about qualifying. Washington ESD will determine eligibility based on her actual wage records. The worst they can do is say no, but if she doesn't apply she'll never know.

That's good advice. I'll tell her to go ahead and file the claim.

0 coins

Exactly right. The application process will walk her through everything and she'll find out quickly if she has enough earnings.

0 coins

Also make sure she applies as soon as possible after being laid off. There's no waiting period in Washington but you want to get the process started right away since it can take time to process claims.

Good point. She was laid off last Friday so I'll have her apply this week.

Yeah don't wait. Even if there are issues with the claim it's better to get it in the system early.

Just to clarify the requirements: You need $1,000 minimum in base period earnings, earnings in at least 2 quarters, and total base period wages at least 1.5 times your highest quarter. If she worked 8 months at a restaurant she probably meets these unless she was working very few hours.

She was working about 25-30 hours a week so hopefully that's enough. Thanks for breaking it down clearly.

0 coins

That should definitely be enough if she was getting regular hours. Restaurant work usually qualifies as long as the employer was paying into the system.

Update: I tried that Claimyr thing and it actually worked! Got through to Washington ESD in like 10 minutes instead of hours. Just wanted to say thanks to whoever mentioned it.

Awesome! I'm glad it helped. The service at claimyr.com has been a lifesaver for getting through to agents when you actually need to talk to someone.

That's great to hear. I might need to try that myself if I run into issues with my claim.

This whole thread has been super helpful. I didn't realize unemployment had so many specific requirements about quarters and earnings amounts.

The requirements can be confusing but they're designed to make sure the system is fair. Once you understand the basics it's not too bad.

0 coins

Yeah the quarter system is weird but it makes sense once you see how it works.

One more thing - if your sister doesn't qualify for regular unemployment, she might want to check if she qualifies for any other programs. Sometimes there are other options depending on the situation.

What kind of other programs? She's not a student or anything like that.

0 coins

There might be workforce development programs or other assistance. Washington ESD can provide information about what's available.

That's encouraging! I'll tell her to go ahead and apply.

The key thing is that Washington ESD will calculate everything automatically based on her employer's wage reports. She doesn't need to figure out all the math herself - just provide accurate information when she applies.

0 coins

Exactly. The system does the calculations. Just be honest about work history and earnings.

That makes me feel better about telling her to apply. Sounds like the system will sort it out.

0 coins

Also remind her that she'll need to do weekly claims and job search activities if she gets approved. It's not just a one-time application.

Cameron Black

Good to know. I'll make sure she understands the ongoing requirements.

The weekly claims are pretty straightforward - just report any work and earnings honestly each week.

Thanks again for the Claimyr tip everyone. Finally got my claim issues sorted out after weeks of trying to reach someone.

So glad it worked out! It's frustrating when you can't get through using the regular phone lines.

Update: My sister applied and got approved! Turns out she had plenty of earnings to qualify. Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement to apply.

That's great news! Good thing she didn't let uncertainty stop her from applying.

Awesome! Hope she finds a new job soon but at least she has some income support in the meantime.

Perfect example of why it's worth applying even when you're not sure about eligibility. Glad it worked out for her.
