How long does it take to reopen an unemployment claim with Washington ESD?
I stopped filing weekly claims back in September when I found a temp job that I thought would be permanent. Well, that didn't work out and I got laid off last week. Now I'm trying to reopen my unemployment claim but I'm not sure how long this process takes. I still have benefit weeks left from my original claim year. Has anyone gone through reopening a claim recently? Do I need to wait for approval before I can start filing weekly claims again, or can I file right away?

You should be able to restart filing weekly claims immediately if you're within your benefit year and have remaining balance. The system usually reactivates automatically when you file your first weekly claim after the gap. Just make sure you report the separation from your temp job correctly.

•That's a relief! I was worried I'd have to wait weeks for approval. Should I call Washington ESD first or just go ahead and file?

•Just file online through your eServices account. If there are any issues, they'll let you know. Calling is usually unnecessary unless you run into problems.

I reopened mine last month and it was pretty straightforward. Took maybe 2-3 days for the system to fully process, but I was able to file my weekly claim right away. The key is making sure you answer all the questions about why you stopped working and why you're available again.

•Did you have to do any job search activities during the weeks you weren't filing? I'm worried they might ask about that gap period.

•No, you don't need to do job search for weeks you weren't claiming benefits. Just restart your job search activities when you reopen.

If you need to talk to Washington ESD about reopening your claim, I'd recommend checking out claimyr.com - they have a service that helps you get through to an actual agent. I used them when I had questions about my claim status and got connected within like 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, never heard of that service. Is it legit? I'm always skeptical of third-party services for government stuff.

•Yeah it's totally legitimate. They just help you get through the phone queue, they don't handle your claim or anything. Really saved me a lot of frustration.

•Good to know this exists! I'll keep it in mind if I run into any issues with the reopening process.

Make sure you check if your benefit year has expired! If it's been more than a year since you first filed, you might need to file a new claim entirely instead of just reopening. That would take longer - probably 2-3 weeks for processing.

•I filed my original claim in March 2024, so I should still be within the benefit year. Thanks for the heads up though!

•Wait, I thought benefit years were only 6 months? I'm confused about this whole system.

Luca Russo
•@profile8 No, benefit years are 52 weeks (one full year) from when you first filed. You might be thinking of the maximum weeks of benefits you can collect.

ugh i hate dealing with this stuff. last time i tried to reopen it took forever and they kept asking for more documentation about why i stopped working. hopefully yours goes smoother

Diego Flores
•What kind of documentation did they want? I have my layoff paperwork from the temp agency.

•they wanted like separation paperwork and pay stubs from the job i had while not claiming. just be ready with everything

One thing to watch out for - if you earned too much during your temp job, it might affect your weekly benefit amount. Washington ESD will recalculate if necessary, but usually temp work doesn't push you into a higher quarter for the calculation.

•The temp job was only 3 months and not super high paying, so hopefully that won't be an issue.

•How do they even know about the temp job if you weren't filing claims? Do they check with employers automatically?

Anastasia Kozlov
•When you reopen, you have to report any work you did while not claiming. They can also get wage reports from employers quarterly, so it's better to be upfront about it.

I'm in a similar situation but my claim was for PUA during the pandemic. Do the same rules apply or is that different?

Luca Russo
•PUA ended in 2021, so you can't reopen that type of claim. You'd need to file a new regular unemployment claim if you're eligible.

•Ah okay, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing - I actually used them again last week when I had questions about my job search requirements. Super convenient and the agents were really helpful in explaining the current rules. Worth it if you want to avoid the phone hassle.

•How much does it cost? I'm tight on money right now but really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•I think it's pretty reasonable, especially compared to the time and frustration of trying to call on your own. Check their website for current pricing.

This is all so confusing. Why can't they just make this process simpler? I've been putting off dealing with my claim because I don't understand half of these rules.

•I get the frustration, but once you do it once it's not too bad. The Washington ESD website actually has pretty good step-by-step guides if you look around.

•Maybe I'll give it another try. I just get overwhelmed by all the terminology and requirements.

Update: I went ahead and filed my weekly claim through eServices and it went through without any issues! Thanks everyone for the advice. The system automatically reactivated my claim and I should get paid for last week within a few days.

For anyone else reading this thread, make sure you restart your job search activities immediately when you reopen your claim. You need to be doing at least 3 job search activities per week and logging them in WorkSourceWA.

Diego Flores
•Good reminder! I already started applying to jobs again but I need to make sure I'm logging everything properly.

•Is WorkSourceWA still the system they use for job search logging? I thought they changed it.

AstroAce
•Yes, WorkSourceWA is still the main system. There might be some updates to the interface but it's the same basic requirement.

I tried to reopen my claim last year and they said I needed to file a new application because too much time had passed. Make sure you understand the difference between reopening and filing new - the timelines are totally different.

Diego Flores
•How long had it been since you last filed? I'm only talking about a 3-4 month gap.

Carmen Vega
•Mine was over a year, so that's why I needed a new claim. Your situation should be fine for just reopening.

Does anyone know if you have to serve a waiting week when you reopen a claim? I can't remember if that's only for brand new claims.
0 coins
Luca Russo
•No waiting week for reopening within your benefit year. The waiting week is only served once per benefit year when you first file.

Andre Rousseau
•Perfect, thanks! That's one less thing to worry about.

Just a heads up that if you worked for a temp agency, make sure you understand whether you quit or were laid off. The temp agency might report it differently than you expect, and that could affect your eligibility.
0 coins
Diego Flores
•Good point. I was definitely laid off - the assignment ended and they didn't have anything else for me. I have the paperwork to prove it.
0 coins
Zoe Stavros
•That should be fine then. Just make sure your story matches what the temp agency reports to Washington ESD.

I love how everyone's sharing their experiences here. It's so much more helpful than trying to navigate the Washington ESD website alone. This kind of community support is what we need more of!

One more thing - if you have any issues with the reopening process, definitely consider using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I used them when I had adjudication issues and it was way better than trying to call Washington ESD directly. The phone system is still pretty frustrating to deal with.

•Thanks for the endorsement! I bookmarked their site just in case I need it in the future.

•I might need to look into that too. I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about a different issue.

For what it's worth, I reopened my claim about 6 months ago and the whole process was done within 24 hours. The system is definitely more efficient than it used to be. Just make sure you have all your information ready when you start the process.

•That's encouraging! Sounds like Washington ESD has really improved their processing times.

Quick question - do you need to report the temp job income when you reopen, or just mention that you worked? I'm not sure how detailed they want you to be.
0 coins
Luca Russo
•You should report the income details when you reopen. They need to know dates of employment and total earnings to make sure it doesn't affect your benefit calculation.

StarStrider
•Okay, I'll make sure to have my pay stubs ready. Better to provide too much information than too little.
