Can you reopen unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor after voluntary closure?
I closed my unemployment claim back in October when I started a temporary job that I thought would become permanent. Well, that didn't work out and they let me go last week. Now I'm trying to figure out if I can reopen my old claim or if I need to file a completely new application with NYS Department of Labor. Has anyone been through this process? I'm worried about losing my benefit year or having to start over with a lower weekly benefit amount.

You can definitely reopen your claim if you're still within your benefit year! Log into your my.ny.gov account and look for the 'Reopen Claim' option. As long as it's been less than 52 weeks since you originally filed, you should be able to restart without losing your weekly benefit amount. You'll just need to file your weekly certification as usual.

•Thank you! I see the reopen option in my account. Do I need to report the job I just lost or will they ask about that during the weekly claim process?

same thing happened to me but it took forever to get through to someone at NYS Department of Labor to confirm everything was processed correctly

When you reopen, make sure you have documentation ready about why your temporary job ended. NYS Department of Labor will want to verify you're eligible again, especially if you voluntarily left the position. If you were laid off due to lack of work, that's usually straightforward. But if there were performance issues or you quit, that might trigger an adjudication review.

•It was definitely a layoff - they said the project ended and they didn't have other work available. I have the termination letter that explains everything.

I've been trying to reach NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my own claim issues and their phone system is impossible. If you run into problems getting through to verify your reopen status, I recently found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting disconnected.

•Wait is this legit? I've been calling for days about my adjudication and keep getting hung up on after waiting an hour.

•Yeah it worked for me. I was skeptical too but honestly anything is better than that automated system that just hangs up on you.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE! They make it impossible to get help when you need it most. I've been trying to resolve an overpayment issue for months and every time I call they transfer me to someone else who transfers me again. It's like they WANT people to give up.

Just wanted to add that when I reopened my claim last year, everything went smoothly online. The key is making sure you do it as soon as possible after becoming unemployed again. There might be a waiting week depending on your situation, but your benefit amount should stay the same as your original claim.
