Do I serve another waiting week when reopening my ESD claim?
I got laid off 3 months ago and collected unemployment for about 6 weeks before finding a temp job. The assignment just ended unexpectedly (was supposed to last through June), and I need to reopen my claim. Do I have to serve another waiting week since I'm reopening rather than filing a new claim? I already served one waiting week when I initially filed. The ESD website isn't clear about this and I really can't afford to miss another week of benefits. Anyone been through this recently?

I reopend my calim last month and did NOT have to do a waiting week again. It's only 1 waiting week per benefit year! But make sure when you reopen you're still within the same benefit year as your original claim (usually 12 months from when you first filed). If your benefit year expired, then yes you'd have to serve a new waiting week.

•Oh thank goodness! Yes, I'm definitely within the same benefit year since I first filed in January 2025. This is such a relief to hear.

The waiting week is only served once per benefit year, so you won't need to serve another one when reopening your claim within the same benefit year. However, make sure you report your temp job earnings accurately when reopening, as ESD will verify this information with your employer. Also, don't forget to restart your job search activities (3 per week) after reopening.

•wait is it 3 job searches now? when i was on unemployment in 2022 it was still just 1 per week? did they change it?

•Yes, it changed back to 3 job search activities per week after the pandemic emergency measures ended. This has been the standard requirement since mid-2023.

Just wanted to say that when I reopened my claim after a short job last year, everything restarted normally without a waiting week BUT there was a delay of almost 2 weeks while they "processed" my reopened claim. So even though you won't lose a week to the waiting week, you might experience some delay in payments resuming. Just FYI!

•Did you do anything to speed up the processing time? Or just had to wait it out?

WATCH OUT they might put you in adjudication when you reopen!! happened to me when I went back to a part-time job for just 3 weeks then tried to reopen. ESD flagged my claim for "job separation issues" even though I told them the job was temporary and just ended. Took FIVE WEEKS to get it resolved and I almost got evicted waiting!!!!

•That's terrifying! Did you try contacting ESD about the delay? I'm already stressing about paying next month's rent.

When I was struggling to reach someone at ESD about my reopened claim (which got stuck in processing), I used Claimyr to get through to an agent. You can see how it works in their video demo here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 They connected me to an ESD agent in about 25 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. The agent confirmed I didn't need another waiting week and fixed the processing delay issue right away. Their website is claimyr.com if you need it.

•Thanks for the suggestion! If my claim doesn't show as processed by early next week, I'll definitely check this out. It would be worth it to avoid weeks of waiting.

i had to reopen twice in 2024 and both times no waiting week but the second time they put me thru ID verification again for some reason. took an extra 4 days. just heads up it might happen

Btw make sure you reopen your claim the SAME DAY your temp job ends. I waited a week assuming I could backdate it (big mistake) and lost that whole week of benefits. ESD is super strict about this - you have to reopen effective the date you become unemployed again.

•My last day was yesterday, so I'm definitely reopening today! Thanks for the heads up - I would have been devastated to lose a week of benefits.

Just to clarify for everyone: The current ESD rules state that: 1. Waiting week is served once per benefit year 2. You must complete 3 job search activities each week 3. When reopening a claim, you should do so immediately after becoming unemployed 4. Temporary/seasonal work that ends is not generally subject to additional adjudication if properly reported 5. Your claim will restart with the same weekly benefit amount you had before

•This is super helpful, thank you! One quick question - will the weeks I already collected count against my total available weeks (usually 26), or does reopening somehow reset that?

•The weeks you've already collected definitely count against your total available weeks. The benefit year and maximum benefits don't reset when reopening - you're just continuing the same claim. So if you used 6 weeks already, you would have approximately 20 weeks remaining (assuming a standard 26-week maximum).
