How long does it take to receive unemployment payment from Washington ESD?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits after waiting 3 weeks for adjudication to finish. My claim status changed to 'paid' yesterday but I still haven't received any money. How long does it usually take from when Washington ESD says 'paid' to actually getting the funds? I'm using direct deposit and really need to know when I can expect the payment to hit my account.

Usually takes 1-2 business days after it shows 'paid' status if you have direct deposit set up. Sometimes it can take up to 3 business days depending on your bank. If you're getting a debit card it takes longer - usually 3-5 business days for the first payment.

•Thanks! I have direct deposit so hopefully it'll be tomorrow or Wednesday. Just worried because I've never done this before.

•Yeah direct deposit is definitely faster than waiting for that debit card to show up in the mail.

Check your payment history on your Washington ESD account too - it should show the exact date they processed the payment. Mine usually hits my checking account the next business day after the processing date.

•Good idea! I'll log in and check that right now.

•The payment history is super helpful for tracking everything. I screenshot mine just in case.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about payment timing, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped when I was stressing about my payments.

•Interesting, I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues. Hopefully I won't need it though!

•I've heard of that service but haven't tried it myself. Good to know it actually works.

ugh the waiting is the worst part!! I remember when I first got approved I was checking my bank account every hour lol. But yeah it's usually pretty quick once it says paid.

•Haha that's exactly what I'm doing right now! Refresh refresh refresh...

•We've all been there! The anticipation is killer when you really need the money.

One thing to watch out for - if this is your first payment, Washington ESD might hold it for an extra day or two for verification purposes. After that first payment though, they usually come through like clockwork.

•This is my first payment so that makes sense. I guess I'll just have to be patient a little longer.

•Yeah they definitely scrutinize that first payment more than the weekly ones after.

Make sure your direct deposit info is correct in your account too. I had a friend who waited forever and it turned out she had the wrong routing number.

•Good point! I double-checked that when I set it up but I'll verify again just to be sure.

•That's such a common mistake. Always worth double checking those bank details.

In my experience, if it's been more than 5 business days since it showed 'paid' and you still haven't received anything, that's when you should start calling Washington ESD to see what's up.

•Okay good to know there's a timeframe for when I should actually start worrying.

•5 business days is a good rule of thumb. Before that you're probably just being impatient (not that I blame you!).

If you do need to call them about payment issues, Claimyr really does work. I was skeptical at first but it got me through to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours.

Also remember that if you filed your weekly claim on Sunday, sometimes the processing doesn't happen until Tuesday or Wednesday. It's not always immediate even after you submit.

•I filed mine on Sunday so that timing makes sense. I guess I'm just being impatient!

•The weekend filing definitely adds a day or two to the whole process.

Once you get your first payment the rest should be much smoother. I've been collecting for 4 months now and it's very predictable - file Sunday, paid by Wednesday usually.

•That's good to hear! I'm hoping to get back to work soon but it's nice to know the system works once you get through the initial hurdles.

The Washington ESD system has definitely gotten better over the years. I remember during the pandemic it was a total nightmare but now it's much more reliable.

•I've heard horror stories from that time period. Glad I'm dealing with it now instead of then!

•Oh man, the pandemic era was rough. People waiting months for payments. Much better now for sure.

Just curious - did you have to do the job search requirements already or does that start after your first payment? I can't remember how that timing works.

Jamal Carter
•I think it starts with my second weekly claim? The first one didn't ask about job searches but I've been looking anyway.

Keisha Williams
•Yeah there's usually a one week grace period before the job search requirements kick in.

Pro tip: sign up for text alerts from your bank if you haven't already. That way you'll know immediately when the deposit hits instead of constantly checking.

•Smart idea! I'm definitely going to set that up right after I post this.

The fact that you got through adjudication in 3 weeks is actually pretty good these days. Some people wait much longer for that initial approval.

Jamal Carter
•I was definitely stressed about it but you're right, 3 weeks isn't too bad compared to some of the stories I've read.

Oliver Fischer
•Yeah I waited 6 weeks for mine to get approved. 3 weeks is pretty reasonable.

UPDATE: If anyone's curious, my payment hit my account this morning! So it was exactly 2 business days after it showed 'paid' status. Thanks everyone for the help and reassurance!

For future reference, if you ever have issues with payments not showing up, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really is worth it. I used it when I had a payment that got stuck for some reason and they helped me get it sorted out quickly.

•Having a reliable way to reach Washington ESD when you need it is really valuable. The phone system can be so frustrating otherwise.

Quick question for the group - do holiday weekends affect the payment timing at all? I'm wondering about Memorial Day coming up.
0 coins
Mei Liu
•Yes, bank holidays will delay payments by a day usually. So if Monday is a holiday, expect everything to be pushed back one business day.
0 coins
Freya Johansen
•Holiday weekends definitely mess with the timing. Plan accordingly if you're counting on that money for bills.

One last tip - make sure to keep filing your weekly claims even while you're waiting for that first payment. Don't let any weeks lapse or you'll have to request them later which is a hassle.

Jamal Carter
•Yes! I made sure to file this week's claim on Sunday even though I hadn't received the first payment yet.

•That's exactly right. Keep that weekly filing schedule no matter what else is going on with your claim.
