How long does it take to receive unemployment payment after being approved Washington ESD?
Finally got approved for unemployment benefits after waiting 6 weeks in adjudication hell! My Washington ESD account now shows 'Paid' status but I'm wondering how long it actually takes to see the money. Do they pay out immediately or is there another waiting period? I've been surviving on credit cards and really need to know when I can expect the funds to hit my account. Also not sure if I get back pay for all those weeks I was waiting or just going forward from approval date.

Congrats on getting approved! From my experience, Washington ESD usually processes payments within 2-3 business days after your weekly claim shows 'Paid' status. You should get backpay for all the weeks you were eligible, even during adjudication. Check your payment history in your account to see exactly what weeks they're paying you for.

•Thanks! Just checked and I can see 6 weeks listed in payment history. Such a relief after all this stress.

•That's exactly what happened to me last year - got all my back weeks paid in one lump sum about 3 days after approval

Usually takes 2-3 business days but I've seen it take up to 5 days sometimes depending on your bank. If you have direct deposit set up it's faster than waiting for a debit card. Make sure your banking info is correct in your account!

•I do have direct deposit setup so hopefully it'll be quick. My bank usually processes things pretty fast.

•Mine took exactly 2 business days with direct deposit through Chase

I had similar situation few months ago - was stuck calling Washington ESD for weeks trying to get status updates during my adjudication period. What finally helped me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually get through to an agent. They have this system that calls for you and gets you connected when an agent is available. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me from sitting on hold for hours every day.

•Never heard of that service - does it actually work? I've been trying to call for 2 weeks about my pending claim.

Mateo Hernandez
•Yeah it worked for me. Took about 4 hours to get connected but way better than the manual calling I was doing before. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim.

•Interesting, might have to try that if my claim gets stuck again

Payment timing depends on when your claim was processed too. If it got approved on a Friday, you probably won't see payment until Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week. Washington ESD doesn't process payments over weekends.

•Mine got approved on a Tuesday so hoping to see it by Thursday or Friday this week

•That's good timing then - should be pretty quick

Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even after approval! I made the mistake of thinking I didn't need to file the week I got approved and it delayed my next payment. You have to file every single week to keep getting paid.

•Good point! I did file my weekly claim on Sunday like usual. Don't want to mess anything up now that I'm finally approved.

•Yeah that's super important - missing even one weekly claim can cause problems

Sean Doyle
•Exactly, the weekly claims are what triggers the actual payment processing

The backpay is the best part honestly. When I got approved after 8 weeks of waiting, that first payment was like $4800 all at once. Made up for all the stress of waiting and living on nothing.

•Wow that must have been such a relief! I'm looking at about $2400 in backpay so definitely going to help catch up on bills.

Does anyone know if the payment comes with any kind of notification? Like do they email you when it's processed or do you just have to keep checking your bank account?

Sean Doyle
•You should get an email notification but I wouldn't rely on it. I always just checked my bank account daily when I was waiting for payments.

•I set up alerts on my banking app so I'll know as soon as any deposit hits

•The emails are hit or miss honestly - sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't

Just curious what your adjudication was for? Mine's been pending for 4 weeks now and Washington ESD won't tell me anything about why it's taking so long.

•It was related to my separation from my last job. My employer initially contested it but then didn't respond to Washington ESD's requests for information, so they approved me by default.

Mateo Hernandez
•That's actually pretty common - employers contest claims but then don't follow through with the paperwork. If you need to talk to someone about your pending claim, I'd definitely recommend trying Claimyr to get through to an actual agent.

Congrats on finally getting approved! The waiting is the worst part of this whole process. Once you start getting regular payments it becomes much more manageable.

•Thank you! Yeah the uncertainty was killing me. Now I can at least plan ahead knowing when money will be coming in.

Pro tip: if you get the Washington ESD debit card instead of direct deposit, you can usually see pending transactions a day before they actually post. Sometimes helps with planning.

•Really? I might switch to the debit card for my next claim then

Luca Romano
•The debit card works but I prefer direct deposit - less chance of the card getting lost or stolen

•I'll stick with direct deposit for now but good to know about the pending transactions thing

Make sure you keep track of all your payments for tax purposes! Washington ESD doesn't withhold taxes automatically unless you specifically request it, so you might owe at the end of the year.
0 coins
StarStrider
•Oh good point! I should probably set aside some money for taxes. Do you know what percentage they recommend?
0 coins
Andre Dupont
•Usually around 10-15% depending on your other income. You can also request tax withholding in your Washington ESD account settings.

How long were you unemployed before you applied? I keep hearing people say you should apply immediately but I thought you had to wait a certain period.
0 coins
StarStrider
•I applied the week after I lost my job. There's no waiting period to apply - you should definitely do it as soon as possible because there's usually a one-week waiting period before benefits start anyway.
0 coins
Sean Doyle
•Exactly, apply immediately! The sooner you apply, the sooner your claim can be processed and you can start receiving benefits.

•Good to know, thanks! I was worried about applying too early

Ugh I'm so jealous! I've been waiting 9 weeks for my adjudication to complete. Washington ESD is absolutely useless when you try to call them. Did you ever get through to talk to someone?
0 coins
StarStrider
•I tried calling a bunch of times but never got through. Honestly I think my case just resolved itself when my employer didn't respond to their inquiries.

•You should really try Claimyr for getting through to Washington ESD. I know I mentioned it earlier but it seriously saved me weeks of frustration. 9 weeks is way too long to wait without any communication.

Question about the backpay - do they pay you for the waiting week too or just the weeks after that?
0 coins
Sean Doyle
•In Washington, there's still a one-week waiting period that doesn't get paid. So if you were eligible for 6 weeks during adjudication, you'd get paid for 5 of those weeks.
0 coins
StarStrider
•That matches what I'm seeing in my payment history - 6 weeks eligible but only 5 weeks being paid out.

Jamal Wilson
•Thanks for clarifying! I was wondering about that

Does the money come all at once or do they spread it out over multiple payments?
0 coins
StarStrider
•From what I can see in my account, it looks like it's all coming in one payment. All the backpay weeks are showing the same processing date.
0 coins
Zara Rashid
•Yeah mine came all at once - one big deposit with all the back weeks included

Mei Lin
•That's awesome, probably makes it easier to manage too

Hopefully this gives others hope who are waiting! I was starting to think my claim would never get approved. The system is so backed up right now.

•Definitely don't give up! I was ready to give up around week 5 but glad I stuck with it. The wait is brutal but most claims do eventually get resolved.

Did you have to do anything special once you got approved or does everything happen automatically now?
0 coins
StarStrider
•Just keep filing weekly claims and looking for work. Everything else should be automatic as long as you meet the requirements each week.

•Make sure you're keeping track of your job search activities too - Washington ESD can audit that at any time

One more thing to watch out for - make sure your direct deposit info is still current. I had to update mine because I switched banks during my waiting period and almost had my payment sent to a closed account.

StarStrider
•Good point! I double-checked mine when I got approved. Would be awful to have the payment bounce because of outdated banking info.

•Exactly - better to check it now than have to wait even longer for payment

•And remember, if anyone else is still stuck waiting for adjudication and needs to reach Washington ESD, Claimyr really does work for getting through to agents. Sometimes that personal contact makes all the difference in getting things moving.
