How long does it take to get unemployment approved in Washington state?

I just filed my initial claim last week and I'm wondering how long does it take to get unemployment benefits approved? I've been out of work for almost a month now and really need to know when I might see payments. My claim shows as 'under review' on the Washington ESD website but there's no timeline given. Has anyone gone through this recently? What should I expect?

it usually takes 2-3 weeks if there are no issues with your claim. make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while its pending

Thanks! I wasn't sure if I should file weekly claims while it's still under review. Good to know.

0 coins

Yes definitely keep filing! I made that mistake and it delayed everything even more.

The standard processing time for Washington ESD is typically 21 days from when you file your initial claim, assuming there are no complications. However, if your claim requires adjudication (like if there are questions about why you left your job or eligibility issues), it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer.

0 coins

What exactly triggers adjudication? I left my job due to lack of work, so I thought it would be straightforward.

Adjudication can be triggered by various things - conflicting information from your employer, questions about availability for work, or even just random quality control reviews. 'Lack of work' should be straightforward but sometimes employers contest claims.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months trying to get through their phone system when my claim got stuck. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent in like 10 minutes. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much time and stress.

0 coins

Interesting, never heard of that before. How much does it cost?

0 coins

They don't publish pricing but honestly after spending hours trying to call Washington ESD myself, it was worth whatever they charge. The peace of mind alone was huge.

0 coins

I might look into this too. I've been trying to call for weeks about my claim status.

0 coins

WASHINGTON ESD IS A JOKE!!! I've been waiting 7 weeks and still nothing. They keep saying 'processing' but no one can tell me what that actually means. The whole system is broken.

0 coins

7 weeks is definitely too long. Have you tried calling them?

0 coins

OF COURSE I'VE TRIED CALLING! You can't get through to anyone. I've called hundreds of times and just get hung up on or put on hold forever.

0 coins

Mine took exactly 18 days from filing to first payment. No issues with my claim though - I was laid off due to company downsizing so it was pretty clear cut. The key is making sure all your information is correct when you file.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear! Did you get any notifications when it was approved or did you just see the payment?

0 coins

I got a determination letter in my online account about a week before the first payment showed up. Check your account regularly for updates.

The timeline really depends on your situation. Regular unemployment claims typically process within 3 weeks, but if you have any complications it can take much longer. Things that can slow it down include: disputes from your employer, questions about your work history, identity verification issues, or if you're claiming benefits for the first time and they need to verify your earnings.

0 coins

This is my first time filing, so maybe that's why it's taking longer? I did provide all my W-2s and employment history when I filed.

0 coins

First-time claims can take a bit longer for verification, but if you provided all the documentation upfront that should help speed things up.

0 coins

i waited 4 weeks and then found out my employer contested my claim. had to go through the whole appeals process which took another 6 weeks. hopefully yours goes smoother than mine did

0 coins

Oh no! How do you find out if your employer contested it?

0 coins

they send you a notice in your online account. if they contest it you'll know pretty quickly

Just to add some perspective - Washington ESD has been dealing with extremely high volume since 2020, and while things have improved, there are still delays. The good news is that if your claim is approved, you'll get back-paid from your claim start date, so you won't lose any benefits for the waiting period.

0 coins

That's good to know about the back pay. I was worried I'd lose those weeks while waiting.

0 coins

Yep, the back pay is automatic. Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval.

I had a similar experience recently and someone recommended that Claimyr service the other person mentioned. I was skeptical at first but honestly it worked great. Got connected to Washington ESD within minutes instead of hours of calling. Really helped me get my claim status sorted out quickly.

0 coins

I might have to try that if I don't hear anything soon. The waiting is really stressful.

0 coins

At this point I'll try anything. The regular phone system is completely useless.

0 coins

Mine took 2.5 weeks and I didn't have any issues. Just be patient and keep checking your account. The determination will show up there before you get any other notification.

0 coins

Thanks for the timeline! It's helpful to hear from people who went through it recently.

0 coins

The worst part is not knowing what's happening while you wait. Washington ESD really needs to do better with communication and updates during the process.

0 coins

agreed, the lack of communication is the most frustrating part

0 coins

They've gotten better than they were a few years ago, but there's definitely room for improvement on transparency.

0 coins

Does anyone know if there's a way to check what stage your claim is in? Mine just says 'processing' but that doesn't tell me much.

0 coins

Unfortunately Washington ESD doesn't provide detailed status tracking. 'Processing' basically means they're reviewing your claim but haven't made a determination yet.

0 coins

This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - I needed to actually talk to someone to find out what was happening with my claim. The online status is pretty useless.

0 coins

Just went through this process last month. Took 19 days total from filing to first payment. No complications, everything was straightforward. The key is making sure you file your weekly claims every week even while waiting.

0 coins

That seems to be the consistent advice - keep filing weekly claims. I'll make sure to do that.

0 coins

i think the timeline also depends on what day of the week you file. i heard somewhere that filing earlier in the week gets processed faster but not sure if thats actually true

0 coins

I don't think the day you file makes a significant difference. Claims are processed in the order they're received regardless of when during the week they come in.

0 coins

The waiting is definitely the hardest part, especially when you have bills to pay. Just hang in there and try to be patient. Washington ESD will eventually get to your claim.

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement. It's tough waiting when money is tight.

0 coins

One thing to watch out for - if Washington ESD needs any additional information from you, they'll send a notice to your online account. Check it regularly because they usually give you a limited time to respond.

0 coins

Good tip! I'll make sure to check my account daily for any notices.

0 coins

Average seems to be 2-3 weeks based on what I've seen here and from my own experience. Just make sure you're eligible and filed everything correctly.

0 coins

I think I filed everything correctly but I guess we'll see. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly.

0 coins

The back pay thing is really important to remember. Even if it takes 4-5 weeks, you'll get paid for all those weeks once it's approved. That helped me feel less stressed about the wait.

0 coins

That does help ease the stress a bit. Thanks for reminding me about that.

0 coins

Hope your claim gets processed soon OP! The waiting is rough but most people do get approved eventually if they're eligible.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info and encouragement! I'll keep checking my account and filing weekly claims while I wait.

0 coins

Just to wrap up with some final advice - stay on top of your weekly claims, check your online account regularly for updates, and don't hesitate to call if you have questions (though getting through can be challenging). The Claimyr service mentioned earlier might be worth trying if you can't get through on your own. Good luck!

Thank you! This thread has been incredibly helpful. I feel much better informed about what to expect now.
