How long does it take to get accepted for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I just filed my initial claim last Tuesday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to get approved? My account shows the claim is under review but doesn't give any timeframe. I've heard everything from 2 weeks to 2 months depending on the situation. I lost my job due to company downsizing so it should be straightforward, but I'm getting anxious about paying rent next month. Anyone know what the current processing times are like?

It really depends on your specific situation. If your claim is straightforward with no issues, you might see approval in 1-2 weeks. But if they need to do any adjudication (like verifying your separation reason or work history), it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer. Check your account daily for any pending issues or requests for additional information.

•Thanks for the info. My account doesn't show any pending issues right now, so hopefully that's a good sign.

•I filed 3 weeks ago and still waiting. No issues showing either but still says 'under review' 😤

Mine took exactly 10 business days from filing to first payment. But that was pretty smooth - no complications with my separation or anything. The key is making sure you file your weekly claims even while waiting for approval, otherwise you'll miss out on those weeks.

•Good point about filing weekly claims! I wasn't sure if I should do that while still pending approval.

•Yes definitely keep filing weekly even during the waiting period. You can claim those weeks retroactively once approved.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to check on my claim status but can never get through. The phone system is impossible - either busy signal or it just hangs up on you after waiting forever. There has to be a better way to get answers about processing times.

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Saved me so much frustration. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Does it actually work for getting through to Washington ESD?

•Yeah it worked great for me. I was able to get my adjudication issue resolved in one call instead of spending weeks trying to reach them myself.

•Have you checked if there are any pending issues in your account? Sometimes they need additional documentation and you might not realize it.

•yeah i check every day, no pending issues. just says under review still

•A month is getting long. You might want to try reaching out to them directly to see what's causing the delay.

The timeline really varies. I work in HR and I've seen employees get approved in a week, others take 6+ weeks. It depends on factors like: how busy Washington ESD is, whether your former employer contests the claim, if you have multiple jobs in your base period that need verification, or if there are any red flags in your work history.

•That's helpful context. I only had one employer for the past 2 years so hopefully that makes it simpler.

•Good point about employer contests. Mine went through quickly because my company was doing layoffs and didn't contest anyone's claims.

•I understand the frustration. Have you tried the Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier? Might be worth it to get some answers about your specific situation.

Just got approved yesterday after 12 days! The key was making sure I had all my employment info correct and filing weekly claims from day one. Also helped that I uploaded my separation letter right when I filed the initial claim.

•Hang in there, it'll come through. The waiting is definitely the hardest part.

For anyone still waiting, here are some things that can cause delays: quit vs fired disputes, wage discrepancies between what you reported and what employers reported, working in multiple states during your base period, or having gaps in employment that need explanation. Washington ESD has to verify everything before approving.

TillyCombatwarrior
•None of those apply to me thankfully. Hopefully mine comes through soon.

•What if you worked in another state during the base period? Does that automatically cause delays?
0 coins
Anna Xian
•Not automatically, but they have to coordinate with the other state to verify wages, which can add time to the process.

mine took forever because my previous employer said i was fired for misconduct (which was BS) and it had to go through adjudication. took almost 8 weeks total but i eventually won the appeal. sometimes its not about processing time but about having to fight incorrect information

TillyCombatwarrior
•Wow 8 weeks! That must have been stressful. Glad you got it sorted out though.

•yeah it was rough but worth fighting. dont let employers get away with false claims

From what I've seen, most straightforward claims get processed within 2-3 weeks. The outliers that take longer usually have some complicating factor. If you're past 3 weeks with no communication, definitely try to contact them.

•thats exactly where im at - past 3 weeks with no word. calling is impossible though

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. The regular phone system is useless but they got me through to someone who could actually explain what was happening with my claim.

Check your correspondence section in your online account too. Sometimes they send requests for info there and people miss it, which can delay processing significantly.

The current average seems to be around 2-3 weeks for uncomplicated claims. But Washington ESD has been pretty overwhelmed lately so some are taking longer. Just keep filing your weekly claims and be patient.

TillyCombatwarrior
•That's encouraging. I'm at the 1 week mark so still within normal range.

•Fair point, the financial stress makes it much harder to wait patiently.

I think the key is setting realistic expectations. If you filed recently, expect 2-4 weeks minimum. If there are any complications or they need to investigate something, it could be 6-8 weeks. The uncertainty is the worst part.

TillyCombatwarrior
•Yeah the uncertainty is definitely stressful. Would be nice if they gave better estimates upfront.

Just want to add that even if your claim takes a while to get approved, you'll get backpay for all the weeks you were eligible and filed weekly claims. So don't worry about 'losing' those weeks during the waiting period.

TillyCombatwarrior
•That's reassuring to know. I've been filing weekly so hopefully those will all get paid out once approved.

•yes thats how it worked for me. got a nice chunk of backpay when mine finally went through

Based on everything I've read here and my own experience, 2-3 weeks seems normal for straightforward layoff situations. Anything involving misconduct allegations, wage disputes, or complex work histories will take longer due to adjudication.
