How long to get approved for unemployment in Washington ESD?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD last Monday and I'm wondering what the typical timeline is for getting approved? I lost my job due to company downsizing and submitted all my paperwork through the online portal. My account shows 'claim under review' but doesn't give any estimated timeframe. I've got bills coming due next week and really need to know if I should expect payment soon or if this could drag on for weeks. Anyone know the current processing times?

Processing times can vary a lot depending on your situation. If it's a straightforward layoff with no complications, you might see approval within 1-2 weeks. But if there are any red flags in your work history or separation reason, it could go into adjudication which adds several more weeks.

•It was definitely a straightforward layoff - whole department got cut. Hoping that means faster processing!

•Even straightforward cases can hit delays unfortunately. The system is just overwhelmed right now.

I filed 3 weeks ago and still waiting. My claim went into adjudication because they needed to verify my employment dates with my previous employer. Washington ESD is supposed to contact employers within 10 business days but it's been longer than that.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I was worried about. Did you try calling to check on the status?

•I've tried calling dozens of times but can never get through. The phone system is impossible.

•You should try claimyr.com - they help people get through to Washington ESD agents without the endless hold times. I used them last month when my claim was stuck and got connected within an hour. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

The official timeline Washington ESD gives is 21 days for a determination, but that's only if there are no issues. If your employer disputes the claim or if there's any question about your eligibility, it can take 6-8 weeks or even longer.

•21 days seems like forever when you have no income coming in. Why does it take so long?

•They have to verify everything - your wages, reason for separation, availability for work. Plus they're understaffed and dealing with high volume.

Mine took exactly 2 weeks from filing to first payment. But I had all my documentation ready and my employer confirmed the layoff quickly. The key is making sure you file your weekly claims even while waiting for approval - you can get backpay for those weeks once approved.

•Good point about the weekly claims! I've been filing them but wasn't sure if I should since I'm not approved yet.

•Definitely keep filing weekly. You won't get paid until approved but you'll get all the back weeks in one lump sum.

ugh the waiting is the worst part!! i filed like a month ago and STILL nothing. every time i check the website it just says 'in progress' with no other info. how are we supposed to pay rent and groceries while waiting???

•A month?? That's insane. Have you been able to get any information about why it's taking so long?

•nope cant get through to anyone. the phone system hangs up on me after waiting forever

•This is exactly why I recommend Claimyr - the phone system is broken but they can get you through to actual people who can explain what's causing the delay.

It really depends on your specific circumstances. I've seen people get approved in 5 days and others wait 2 months. The system is pretty unpredictable right now. If you were laid off (not fired for cause), have clear wage records, and your employer doesn't contest it, you should be on the faster side.

•That's reassuring since my situation checks all those boxes. Fingers crossed!

Check if you need to complete any additional steps like work search requirements or identity verification. Sometimes claims get held up because people miss those requirements. Log into your account and look for any pending items or messages.

•Good suggestion - I checked and don't see any pending items, just the status showing under review.

•That's good then. Probably just working through the normal verification process.

honestly the whole system is a joke. they make you jump through hoops while you're already stressed about money. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment and by then I was behind on everything

•6 weeks is terrifying. I really hope mine doesn't take that long.

•Unfortunately that's becoming more common. The system just wasn't designed to handle this volume efficiently.

I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. If the separation was a clear layoff and the employer responds quickly to Washington ESD's request for information, it typically takes 10-14 business days. The delays usually happen when employers are slow to respond or when there are questions about the separation circumstances.

•That's helpful insider info! My company was pretty organized with the layoffs so hopefully they'll respond quickly to any requests.

•Yeah, larger companies usually have systems in place to handle these requests efficiently. Small companies sometimes take longer to respond.

meanwhile i'm here eating ramen noodles for the third week in a row waiting for my claim to process... at least tell us WHERE we are in the queue or something

•Right?? Even a progress bar would be better than just 'under review' forever.

•The lack of transparency is definitely frustrating. Other states have better tracking systems.

My experience was pretty smooth - filed on a Tuesday, got approved the following Wednesday, first payment hit my account Friday. But I think I got lucky with timing and had a very straightforward case.

•Wow, 8 days total? That gives me hope that it can be fast when everything goes right.

•Yeah, I was surprised too. I think it helped that I filed early in the week and had all my employer info accurate.

The thing that sped up my process was getting directly connected to a Washington ESD agent through Claimyr. Instead of waiting weeks wondering what was happening, I found out my employer hadn't responded to their request for information. The agent was able to follow up immediately and my claim was approved within days after that.

•That sounds incredibly useful. I'm definitely going to look into that if my claim doesn't move soon.

•Same here, the uncertainty is almost worse than the wait itself. At least if you know what's causing the delay you can do something about it.

Just remember that even if approval takes a while, you'll get paid for all the weeks you've been filing claims once it goes through. The first payment is usually bigger because it includes all the back weeks.

•That's a good reminder. I've been filing weekly so hopefully that lump sum will help catch up on bills.

Pro tip: make sure your contact information is current in your profile. I know someone whose claim was delayed because Washington ESD was trying to reach them at an old phone number for additional verification.

•Good catch! Just double-checked and everything looks current.

The average seems to be about 2-3 weeks for most people I know, but there's a lot of variation. Keep filing your weekly claims and try to be patient. I know that's easier said than done when money's tight.

•Thanks for the reality check. 2-3 weeks feels manageable if I plan for it.

whatever you do dont stop filing the weekly claims even if it feels pointless. i made that mistake and lost out on 2 weeks of benefits when i finally got approved

Dylan Mitchell
•Oh wow, that's a costly mistake! I'll definitely keep filing every week no matter what.

•yeah it was like $800 down the drain because i got frustrated and skipped those weeks
