How long will it take to get unemployment benefits approved in Washington ESD?
I just filed my initial claim with Washington ESD yesterday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to get approved and start receiving benefits? I lost my job last week due to company downsizing and I'm already stressed about covering my rent next month. My employer said they wouldn't contest the claim. Does anyone know the current processing times? I've heard it can take weeks but hoping that's not accurate.

The standard timeframe is usually 2-3 weeks if there are no issues with your claim. Since your employer won't contest it, that should help speed things up. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial decision.

•Thanks! I wasn't sure if I should start filing weekly claims before getting approved. I'll do that right away.

•Yeah definitely file weekly claims from the start or you'll lose those weeks permanently

Mine took exactly 3 weeks back in October. No issues, just the standard processing time. The waiting is the worst part but Washington ESD is pretty reliable once they get moving.

•That's reassuring to hear. Did you get backpay for the weeks you were waiting?

Laura Lopez
•Yes, as long as you file your weekly claims during the waiting period you'll get backpay for all eligible weeks.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money

•It's worth checking out their site for pricing info. For me it was worth it just to get peace of mind about my claim status instead of wondering and worrying.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Might try it if I can't get through this week.

The real issue is if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason. That's when it can take 6-8 weeks or even longer. Hopefully yours is straightforward since it's a layoff.

KaiEsmeralda
•What would cause it to go into adjudication? I'm worried now that I might have said something wrong on the application.

Debra Bai
•Common reasons are if there's a question about why you left your job, if you worked in multiple states, or if there's missing wage information. Layoffs are usually pretty clean though.

•Okay that makes me feel better. It was definitely a clear layoff situation with severance paperwork and everything.

i've been waiting 4 weeks now and still nothing... called like 50 times and can never get through. this system is broken

•That sounds like your claim might be in adjudication. You should see a status update in your SecureAccess Washington account if that's the case.

•yeah it says adjudication in progress but no details about what they need or how long it will take

•This is exactly the situation where Claimyr helped me. I was able to talk to an agent who explained what was holding up my claim and what I needed to submit.

Don't forget you have to do the job search requirements too once you start receiving benefits. It's 3 job contacts per week in Washington. Keep good records from day one.

KaiEsmeralda
•Do I need to start job searching right away or can I wait until I'm approved?
0 coins
Debra Bai
•You should start right away. The job search requirement applies to any week you're claiming benefits for, even if you haven't been paid yet.

I'm in the same boat as you - filed Monday and just sitting here anxiously waiting. The not knowing is killing me more than anything.

•Right?? I keep checking my account like 5 times a day hoping something will change.

•Totally normal reaction. Try to stay busy with job applications - it helps pass the time and you need to do it anyway.

The weekly benefit amount depends on your past earnings too. You can estimate it using the calculator on the Washington ESD website before your claim is approved.

KaiEsmeralda
•I did that and it looks like I should get around $340 per week if approved. Does that sound right for someone making $45k annually?
0 coins
Debra Bai
•That sounds about right. Washington's maximum weekly benefit is $999 but most people get somewhere in the $300-500 range depending on their wages.

Make sure all your contact information is current in your account. They'll send important notices by mail and email, and you don't want to miss anything that could delay your claim.

•Good point. I just moved last month so I need to double-check my address is updated.

If you're really strapped for cash while waiting, look into local food banks and assistance programs. No shame in getting help while you're between jobs.

KaiEsmeralda
•Thanks for the suggestion. I might need to look into that if this takes much longer.

•211 is a good resource for finding local assistance programs. Just dial 2-1-1.

The system has been pretty backed up lately. I know someone who filed in November and it took almost a month to get their first payment. Hang in there.

Brianna Muhammad
•That's longer than usual. Was there something specific causing the delay?

Lucas Schmidt
•I think it was just high volume. They eventually got everything sorted out with backpay.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit in your account right away. Paper checks take even longer to arrive and can get lost in the mail.
0 coins
KaiEsmeralda
•Already done! I set that up as soon as I filed the claim.

Debra Bai
•Smart move. Direct deposit usually processes within 2-3 business days once benefits are approved.

I used Claimyr last month when I couldn't get through to ask about my job search requirements. The agent was really helpful and explained exactly what I needed to do. Definitely worth it if you're stuck.

•How quickly were you able to get connected to someone?

•It was pretty fast - within like 10 minutes I was talking to a real person at Washington ESD instead of getting hung up on.

Just remember that even if your claim gets approved quickly, there's usually a one-week waiting period before you receive your first payment. That's standard for all unemployment claims in Washington.
0 coins
KaiEsmeralda
•Wait, so even after approval there's another week delay? That's rough.
0 coins
Debra Bai
•It's just how the system works. The waiting week is unpaid but you'll get benefits for every week after that as long as you keep filing weekly claims.

Keep filing those weekly claims religiously. Miss one and you could lose benefits for that entire week permanently. Set a reminder on your phone.

KaiEsmeralda
•When exactly do I need to file each week? Is there a specific day?
0 coins
Debra Bai
•You can file weekly claims starting Sunday for the previous week. Most people do it Sunday morning to get it out of the way.

Camila Castillo
•I do mine every Sunday at 8am like clockwork. Makes it automatic.

The good news is that once you're in the system and approved, the weekly payments are pretty reliable. It's just getting through that initial approval process that takes time.

KaiEsmeralda
•That's what I'm hoping for. Just need to get over this hurdle.

Laura Lopez
•Exactly. The first few weeks are stressful but then it becomes routine if you stay on top of your weekly claims and job search.

Document everything from day one - when you filed, what you submitted, any correspondence you get. It helps if you ever need to appeal or have questions later.

•Good advice. I've been screenshotting everything just in case.

If you haven't already, make sure you understand the difference between able and available. You have to be both to qualify for benefits each week.
0 coins
KaiEsmeralda
•I think I understand but can you clarify? I want to make sure I'm answering the weekly questions correctly.
0 coins
Debra Bai
•Able means you're physically and mentally capable of working. Available means you're ready to accept work and not restricted by things like travel or other commitments.

Try to stay positive while you wait. I know it's easier said than done when you're worried about bills, but the system does work eventually.

Last thing - if you get any correspondence from Washington ESD, read it carefully and respond by any deadlines. Missing deadlines can really mess up your claim.

•Noted. I'll be checking my mail and email obsessively until this gets resolved.

Debra Bai
•That's the right approach. Better to be overly cautious than miss something important.

•And if you do get something confusing in the mail, that's another good reason to use something like Claimyr to talk to an agent who can explain what you need to do.
