How long do I have to wait for unemployment benefits from Washington ESD?
Just filed my initial claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm wondering how long the wait time is before I actually start receiving benefits? I've been out of work for about 10 days now and I'm starting to stress about my rent payment. My claim status just says 'submitted' but doesn't give me any timeline. Is there a typical processing time I should expect? I know there's a waiting week but I'm not sure if that's in addition to processing time or what.

There's typically a one-week waiting period for new claims, plus processing time. If your claim is straightforward with no issues, you're usually looking at 2-3 weeks total before your first payment. The waiting week is unpaid - it's basically like a deductible for unemployment insurance.

•So even if my claim gets approved right away, I still have to wait a full week before any money comes through?

Emily Nguyen-Smith
•Exactly. The waiting week is mandatory for everyone. After that, you'll get paid for each week you're eligible, but that first week is always unpaid.

depends on whether your claim needs adjudication or not. mine went into adjudication for 'separation issues' and took 6 weeks before i saw a dime. if there's any question about why you lost your job, expect delays.

•I was laid off due to budget cuts, not fired or anything. Should be pretty straightforward I hope.

•yeah that should be fine. layoffs are usually processed pretty quick since there's no fault involved

Been through this process multiple times unfortunately. If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to an agent without sitting on hold forever. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration when my claim got stuck.

•How does that work exactly? Do they just call for you or something?

Sophia Rodriguez
•Yeah, basically they handle the calling and waiting part, then connect you when an agent picks up. Beats sitting on hold for 3+ hours like I was doing.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Might be worth checking out if I run into issues.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting 8 WEEKS for my benefits and they keep giving me the runaround. 'We're reviewing your case' they say but NO ONE can tell me what they're actually reviewing! I've sent in every document they asked for THREE TIMES and still nothing. This is ridiculous - people have bills to pay!

•Have you tried contacting your state representative? Sometimes they can help push things along when Washington ESD gets stuck.

•I might have to try that. At this point I'm ready to try anything.

make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. if you miss those weekly filings you could lose benefits for those weeks even after you get approved

•Good point! I wasn't sure if I should be doing that yet. How do I file weekly claims if my initial claim isn't approved yet?

Olivia Martinez
•you can still file them through the website. just log in to your account and it should let you file weekly claims even if your initial claim is still pending

Also remember that you need to be actively looking for work and keeping a job search log. Washington ESD requires at least 3 job search activities per week. Don't wait until your benefits start to begin job searching - that requirement kicks in immediately.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs or other stuff too?

•Job applications, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews, updating your resume with a counselor. Check the WorkSourceWA website for the full list of approved activities.

honestly the hardest part is just getting through to someone at Washington ESD when you have questions. the phone system is a nightmare and half the time it just hangs up on you after waiting forever

•This is so true! I've been hung up on at least 5 times this week trying to get through.

Sophia Rodriguez
•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - it eliminates that phone tag frustration completely.

What time of day is best to call Washington ESD? I've been trying in the afternoons but never get through.

•First thing in the morning when they open at 8am tends to be your best bet. Lines get jammed up quickly after that.

Mia Green
•Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow morning.

I went through this exact same thing last year. Filed my claim on a Tuesday, got approved the following Monday, and received my first payment (minus the waiting week) on Wednesday. So about 2.5 weeks total. Pretty standard timeline for a straightforward layoff situation.

•That's reassuring to hear! Hopefully mine goes just as smoothly.

•Just stay on top of filing your weekly claims and you should be fine. The system works, it's just slow.

also check if your employer is going to contest your claim. sometimes they fight unemployment claims to keep their rates down and that can delay everything

Edison Estevez
•How would I know if they're contesting it? Would Washington ESD tell me?
0 coins
Olivia Martinez
•yeah they'll send you a notice if there's any dispute. but since you were laid off due to budget cuts, that's probably not gonna happen

Don't get your hopes up too much. This system is designed to frustrate people into giving up. They make it as difficult as possible on purpose!

•I understand the frustration, but most claims do go through without major issues. The problem cases just tend to be more visible because people talk about them more.

•Maybe you're right. I'm just so fed up with this whole process.

Are you eligible for any emergency assistance while waiting? Some counties have programs to help with rent and utilities during the waiting period.

Edison Estevez
•I hadn't thought about that. Do you know where I'd look for that kind of help?

Charlie Yang
•Check with 211 (dial 2-1-1) or your county's social services department. They can point you toward local assistance programs.

One more thing about Claimyr - I used it when my claim got stuck in adjudication and was able to get a clear explanation of what was holding things up. Sometimes just knowing what's happening makes the wait more bearable.

•That's a good point. The uncertainty is almost worse than the actual wait time.

whatever you do, don't miss any deadlines if they ask for additional information. they'll close your claim if you don't respond in time and then you have to start all over

•Good to know! I'll make sure to check my mail and email regularly.

•yeah and set up notifications in your online account if you haven't already. that way you'll know right away if they need something from you

The waiting is the worst part. Once you get that first payment though, the weekly ones usually come pretty consistently.

Edison Estevez
•How long after the first payment do the weekly ones start coming?
0 coins
Mia Green
•Usually every Tuesday if you file your weekly claim on time. Pretty reliable once you're in the system.

just went through this myself - took exactly 3 weeks from filing to first payment. not too bad considering all the horror stories you hear

Edison Estevez
•That gives me hope! Were there any complications with your claim?

ApolloJackson
•nope, pretty straightforward. layoff due to company downsizing, no issues with my work history. sounds similar to your situation

One final tip - if you haven't already, register with WorkSourceWA. It's required for unemployment benefits and the sooner you get that done, the better. Plus they have job search resources that can help you find work faster.

•I registered when I filed my claim - is there anything else I need to do with WorkSourceWA?

•Just keep your profile updated and use their job search tools. Some of the activities on there count toward your weekly job search requirements too.

If you're really strapped for cash, you might want to look into gig work or temporary jobs while waiting. Just make sure to report any income on your weekly claims.
0 coins
Edison Estevez
•I was thinking about that. Do I need to report even small amounts like $50 from a one-day gig?
0 coins
Lucas Kowalski
•Yes, report everything. Washington ESD will reduce your benefits based on what you earn, but it's better than getting hit with an overpayment later.

Just to follow up on the Claimyr thing - I know some people are skeptical about using third-party services, but honestly it saved me so much time and frustration. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get answers, and this was the only way I could actually get through.

•I'm definitely going to keep that in mind if I run into any issues. Thanks for sharing your experience!
