This thread should be pinned! So many people get confused about the weekly vs monthly thing when they first start filing.
Just want to mention one more time for anyone reading this later - if you need to reach Washington ESD and can't get through by phone, check out Claimyr. Really helped me when I was stuck in the system. The demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ explains it better than I can.
Pro tip: take screenshots of every page when you file your initial claim. If there are any issues later, you'll have proof of what you submitted.
The whole process seems scary at first but it's really not that bad. Just take your time filling out the application and make sure all your info is accurate. You got this!
Whatever you decide, act quickly. These overpayment notices have strict deadlines for appeals and if you miss them, your options become much more limited. Even if you're considering bankruptcy, don't let the appeal deadline pass.
I tried Claimyr when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about my overpayment and it actually worked. Was able to speak with someone who explained that they offer payment plans as low as $25/month if you can show financial hardship. Way better than dealing with bankruptcy.
Just want to add - make sure you keep doing your weekly claims even while you're job searching. I made the mistake of skipping a week and it messed up my payments for a month.
The bottom line is that unemployment insurance is exactly that - insurance. Employers pay premiums (taxes) and when claims are filed, benefits come from the insurance fund. It's no different than any other type of business insurance, really.

Quick reminder that if you run into any issues after filing, the Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but they got me through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach anyone for weeks. Worth checking out their demo video if you end up needing to talk to someone.

•I'll keep that in mind in case I run into problems. Hopefully the filing process goes smoothly and I won't need to call anyone.

•That's the best case scenario! But it's good to know the option exists if you need it.

Final advice from someone who's been through this twice - file immediately, don't stress about having every detail perfect, and make sure you understand the weekly filing requirements. Those three things will set you up for success with Washington ESD.
