How long does it take for your unemployment to be approved in Washington ESD?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear back. My account just shows 'claim under review' but doesn't give me any timeline. I've been out of work since early January when my restaurant closed permanently, and I really need to know when I can expect my first payment. Has anyone gone through this recently? How long should I expect to wait for approval?

It took about 2 weeks for mine to get approved last month. But that was pretty straightforward - no complications or anything.

•Did you get any notifications during those 2 weeks or did it just suddenly change to approved?

•I got an email when it was approved but nothing before that. Just had to keep checking my account.

The timeline really depends on whether your claim needs adjudication or not. If Washington ESD needs to verify your work history or investigate any issues, it can take much longer - sometimes 4-6 weeks or more. Since you're only at 10 days, you're still within the normal processing window.

•How do I know if my claim needs adjudication? My account doesn't show any flags or issues.

•If it needed adjudication, you'd typically see a status like 'adjudication in progress' or get a notice asking for additional information. 'Claim under review' usually just means normal processing.

I've been waiting 3 weeks and still nothing. Keep calling Washington ESD but can never get through - the phone system is terrible. Getting really frustrated with this whole process.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. I found it at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped me when I couldn't reach anyone.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Does it actually work?

•Yeah, it got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of calling for hours. Worth trying if you're stuck.

TYPICAL WASHINGTON ESD NONSENSE. They take forever to process claims but expect you to file your weekly claims on time or they'll disqualify you. The whole system is backwards.

•I feel your frustration but complaining doesn't help. The system is overwhelmed and they're doing their best.

•Their 'best' isn't good enough when people can't pay rent while waiting for approval.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. That's a requirement and if you miss weeks, you'll lose those benefits even if your claim gets approved later.

•Really? I can file weekly claims before my initial claim is approved?

Dmitry Smirnov
•Yes, absolutely. You should be able to file weekly claims in your account even while the initial claim is pending. Don't skip any weeks.

Also make sure you're doing your job search requirements. Even if your claim isn't approved yet, you need to be looking for work and logging your activities.

•How many job searches do I need to do per week in Washington?

Sofia Perez
•It's usually 3 job search activities per week, but check your specific requirements in your account since it can vary.

Mine took forever too but turned out there was an issue with my previous employer not responding to Washington ESD's request for information. Might be worth calling to check if there are any hold-ups.

•That's what I'm worried about. My restaurant closed suddenly so I'm not sure if the owner is even responding to requests.

•If that's the case, Washington ESD will eventually approve your claim anyway, but it might take longer while they try to contact the employer.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing - I used it again yesterday to check on my claim status and got through to an agent right away. She was able to tell me exactly where my claim stood and what to expect next. Way better than waiting on hold for hours.

•I'm definitely going to try this. Thanks for the recommendation!

•How much does Claimyr cost? Seems too good to be true.

•It's worth whatever it costs when you need to talk to someone urgently. Check their site for details.

Remember that Washington ESD is still dealing with higher than normal claim volumes. Two weeks is pretty standard for straightforward claims right now.

•That's reassuring. I was starting to think something was wrong with my claim.

whatever you do dont stop filing weekly claims!! i made that mistake and lost 3 weeks of benefits even after my claim got approved

Dylan Cooper
•Oh no! That's exactly what I was worried about. Good to know I need to keep filing.

•This is really important - you can't go back and claim weeks you didn't file for, even if your initial claim was still pending.

I work for a nonprofit that helps people with unemployment claims. The average processing time for Washington ESD right now is 14-21 days for claims without complications. Restaurant closures are usually straightforward since there's no question about the reason for separation.

•That's really helpful to know. So I'm probably still in the normal timeframe then.

•Yes, you're still well within normal processing time. Don't panic yet!

Check your account daily but dont obsess over it. The status will change when it changes. I drove myself crazy checking every few hours.

•I'm definitely guilty of checking too often. It's hard not to when you're waiting for money you need.

UPDATE: I tried Claimyr this morning and actually got through to a Washington ESD agent! She told me my claim was approved yesterday but the system just hadn't updated yet. Sometimes talking to a real person is the only way to get answers.

•That's awesome! I'm going to try Claimyr too if I don't hear anything by next week.

•Glad it worked for you! It's such a relief when you can actually talk to someone who knows what's going on.

Be patient but also be proactive. If you hit the 3 week mark with no communication, definitely reach out to Washington ESD to make sure nothing is stuck.

•Good advice. I'll give it another week and then start making calls.

Also remember that once your claim is approved, you'll get paid for all the weeks you filed weekly claims, including the ones while you were waiting for approval. So you won't lose that money if you keep filing.

Dylan Cooper
•That's really good to know. I was worried I'd only get paid from the approval date forward.

restaurants have been closing left and right lately, washington esd is probably seeing tons of claims like yours so they know its legit

Dylan Cooper
•True, unfortunately there have been a lot of closures. Hopefully that means they'll process it quickly.

I'm going through something similar - filed 12 days ago and still waiting. At least I know I'm not alone in this!

Dylan Cooper
•Definitely not alone! Hopefully we both hear something soon.

Final reminder: keep filing weekly claims, keep doing job searches, and don't panic unless you go past 3-4 weeks without any communication. Washington ESD is slower than we'd like but they do process claims.

Just to close the loop on Claimyr - I've now used it three times and it's worked every time to get me connected to Washington ESD. Really recommend it if you're having trouble reaching them through normal channels.
