How long does a pending adjudication take for unemployment - Washington ESD

My UI claim has been stuck in pending adjudication for over 5 weeks now and I'm starting to panic. I can see it in my account but there's no timeline or explanation of what they're reviewing. I've tried calling Washington ESD multiple times but either get disconnected or sit on hold for hours with no answer. Has anyone else experienced this kind of delay? I'm behind on rent and really need to know if this is normal or if something went wrong with my claim.

5 weeks is definitely longer than usual but not unheard of unfortunately. Mine took about 3 weeks last year when they were reviewing my separation reason. Did you get any correspondence from Washington ESD about what specifically they're adjudicating?

•

No that's the frustrating part - no letters or emails explaining what they're even looking at. Just says pending adjudication in my account.

That's rough. Usually they send something but the mail can be delayed too. Check your secure messages in the Washington ESD portal if you haven't already.

Adjudication delays have been really bad lately. I work in HR and we've had several former employees tell us their Washington ESD claims are taking 4-6 weeks for adjudication. The department is understaffed and they're being extra thorough with separation reviews.

6 weeks?? I can't wait that long. Is there any way to expedite this or find out what's causing the delay?

0 coins

Unfortunately no way to expedite. The adjudication process has to run its course. But definitely keep trying to get through to them by phone to at least understand what they're reviewing.

I was in the same situation last month - couldn't get through to Washington ESD no matter what I tried. Finally used this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Got through to an actual person within a few hours and found out what was holding up my adjudication.

Never heard of that service. Is it legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach Washington ESD.

Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you. The agent I spoke with was able to tell me my claim was held up because of a discrepancy in my work history dates.

This might be worth trying. I'm desperate at this point and need to know what's going on with my claim.

0 coins

Adjudication timelines vary a lot depending on what they're reviewing. Simple separation issues might take 2-3 weeks, but if there are questions about willful misconduct or availability for work, it can take much longer. The fact that you haven't received any correspondence is concerning though.

What kind of things trigger the longer adjudication reviews? I was laid off due to budget cuts so I thought it would be straightforward.

0 coins

Budget cuts should be straightforward, but sometimes employers contest claims or there are discrepancies in the information provided. That's why getting through to Washington ESD is so important - they can tell you exactly what's being reviewed.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!! I've been waiting 7 weeks now and Washington ESD won't even tell me what they're doing. How is this legal to just hold people's benefits hostage with no communication? I'm about to lose my apartment!

I feel your frustration but unfortunately this is just how the system works. The adjudication process exists to prevent fraud and ensure only eligible claims are paid.

•

Well the system is broken when people can't get basic information about their own claims. There has to be a better way.

For what it's worth, I've noticed that most adjudication delays I've seen lately have been resolved within 6-8 weeks total. Not great but at least there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel. And if you do get approved, you'll get backpay for all the weeks you've been waiting.

Caleb Stark

•

That's somewhat reassuring about the backpay. I just wish there was better communication about timelines.

The backpay is nice but doesn't help when you need money NOW for bills and rent.

I went through this same situation earlier this year. The waiting is the worst part because you have no idea what's happening. But once they made their decision, I got all my backpay within a week. Just try to hang in there and keep documenting your job search activities in case they ask for that information.

Good point about the job search log. I've been keeping track but wasn't sure if I needed to during adjudication.

Camila Jordan

Definitely keep tracking everything. Better to have too much documentation than not enough.

One thing that might help is checking if your employer submitted any additional information to Washington ESD recently. Sometimes delays happen when there are back-and-forth communications between ESD and employers that claimants aren't aware of.

How would I find that out? My former employer hasn't mentioned anything to me about Washington ESD contacting them.

0 coins

They might not tell you directly. But if you can get through to Washington ESD, they should be able to tell you if they're waiting on information from your employer.

Just wanted to update - I mentioned Claimyr earlier and wanted to add that they were really helpful in my situation. After I got through to Washington ESD with their help, I found out my adjudication was actually complete but there was a system glitch that wasn't updating my account properly. The agent fixed it while I was on the phone.

0 coins

That's exactly the kind of issue that would drive me crazy. Glad you got it sorted out.

A system glitch? That's terrifying to think about. Makes me wonder if that's what's happening with mine too.

0 coins

System glitches are more common than people realize unfortunately. That's why it's so important to actually speak with someone at Washington ESD rather than just relying on what you see in your online account. The agents can see things in their system that don't always display correctly on the claimant side.

This is making me more determined to get through to them somehow. I can't just keep waiting and hoping.

0 coins

Absolutely. Being proactive is the right approach. Even if everything is processing normally, at least you'll have peace of mind.

I'm in week 4 of adjudication and reading this thread is both helpful and terrifying. At least I know I'm not alone in this nightmare.

Caleb Stark

Yeah it's scary but also somewhat comforting to know others are going through the same thing.

Hang in there. Most people do get through the process eventually, even if it takes longer than expected.

0 coins

Has anyone tried contacting their state representative about these delays? Seems like someone should be holding Washington ESD accountable for these ridiculous wait times.

I actually did contact my rep's office last week. They said they'd look into it but haven't heard back yet.

0 coins

At least you tried. Maybe if enough people complain they'll actually do something about the staffing issues.

For anyone still waiting, I'd recommend setting up a routine of checking your account daily and trying to call at different times. I had the most luck getting through around 2 PM on weekdays, though it still took multiple attempts.

Caleb Stark

•

Thanks for the tip about 2 PM. I've been trying first thing in the morning with no luck.

Ella Lewis

•

That's smart about varying the times. Though honestly, using Claimyr saved me so much frustration with the calling process.

One final piece of advice - if you do get through to Washington ESD, make sure to ask for a case number or reference number for your call. That way if you need to follow up, you can reference that specific conversation. It helps avoid having to start over with your explanation.

0 coins

Caleb Stark

•

Great tip! I'll definitely ask for that if I ever get through.

0 coins

Yes, always get documentation. And if possible, ask for an email confirmation of whatever they tell you during the call.

Thanks everyone for all the advice and sharing your experiences. This thread has been more helpful than anything I've found on the Washington ESD website. I'm going to try the Claimyr service tomorrow and hopefully finally get some answers about what's going on with my claim.
