How long does Washington ESD unemployment investigation take - been waiting 6 weeks
My unemployment claim has been under investigation for 6 weeks now and I'm starting to panic. I got laid off from my warehouse job in December and filed right away. Washington ESD said they needed to verify my separation reason with my employer, but it's been radio silence since then. My account just shows 'under review' with no timeline. I've called the Washington ESD phone line dozens of times but either get disconnected or told they can't give me any updates. Has anyone been through this process? How long did your investigation actually take?

•8 weeks?? How did you survive that long without payments? I'm already behind on rent.

Washington ESD investigations can vary widely depending on the complexity of your case. If it's just employer verification, it typically takes 4-8 weeks. However, if there are questions about misconduct or voluntary quit versus layoff, it can stretch to 10-12 weeks. The delay is often because employers have 10 business days to respond to Washington ESD requests, and some drag their feet.

•It was definitely a layoff - they eliminated my whole department. Shouldn't that be straightforward?

•You'd think so, but sometimes employers contest layoffs to avoid their unemployment tax rates going up. Washington ESD has to investigate any dispute.

I was stuck in investigation hell for 3 months last year. Couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD no matter how many times I called. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an actual agent who could look at my case. Found out my employer had provided conflicting information and Washington ESD was waiting for clarification. The agent was able to expedite the process once I explained my side. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of Claimyr before. Does it actually work to get through to Washington ESD?

•Yeah, it's legit. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected. The agent I talked to was really helpful.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already broke from waiting on my claim.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting 9 weeks for my investigation and Washington ESD won't even tell me what they're investigating! This is our money we paid into the system and they treat us like criminals.

•I feel your frustration but getting angry won't speed up the process. Have you tried reaching out to your state representative's office?

•Why should I have to get politicians involved just to get unemployment benefits I'm entitled to?

•You should be able to see some status information in your SecureAccess Washington account. Look for any pending issues or requests for information.

•checked that already, just says under review like OPs account

Investigation timelines at Washington ESD have definitely gotten longer since 2020. They're understaffed and dealing with fraud concerns, so they're being extra thorough. The good news is that if you're approved, you'll get backpay for all the weeks you were waiting. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even during the investigation.

•Wait, I need to keep filing weekly claims during the investigation? Nobody told me that!

Mila Walker
•Yes! Very important. If you don't file weekly claims, you won't get paid for those weeks even if approved later. Log into your account and file for all the weeks you missed.

•This is why the system is so confusing. They should make this stuff clearer upfront.

My investigation took 11 weeks but that was because my previous employer filed an appeal claiming I was fired for misconduct (which wasn't true). Had to wait for a hearing and everything. If yours is just separation verification it should be faster.

Sophia Miller
•How did the hearing go? Were you able to prove it wasn't misconduct?

Lucas Adams
•Yeah, won the hearing because my employer couldn't provide any documentation of the alleged misconduct. Got all my backpay eventually.

Try calling Washington ESD right at 8am when they open. Sometimes you can get through faster then. Also the technical support line sometimes transfers you to claims if you ask nicely.

•I've tried calling at 8am but still get the busy signal or get disconnected after holding for 2+ hours.

•Same experience here. The phone system is just overwhelmed.

Check if Washington ESD sent any mail to your address or emails to your account. Sometimes there are requests for additional information that people miss, and that can delay the investigation significantly.

•I've been checking religiously but haven't gotten anything. My address is correct in my account too.

•Good that you're staying on top of it. Some people miss important notices and then wonder why their claims are delayed.

My sister went through this last year and her investigation took 5 weeks. Her employer was slow to respond but once they did, Washington ESD approved her claim within a few days. Just gotta be patient unfortunately.

•Patience is hard when bills are piling up, but thanks for the hope that it will eventually resolve.

I used to work for a company that got these requests from Washington ESD all the time. Some HR departments are just slow or don't prioritize responding. The 10 business day window is just a guideline - there's no real penalty for employers who respond late.

Sophia Miller
•That's so frustrating. We suffer while employers drag their feet with no consequences.

•There really should be penalties for employers who delay these responses. It's not fair to claimants.

Have you tried reaching out to WorkSource? They sometimes can help navigate Washington ESD issues or at least point you in the right direction for assistance.

•I haven't tried WorkSource yet. Do they actually have any pull with Washington ESD investigations?

•They can't speed up investigations but they might be able to help you understand what's happening or make sure you haven't missed anything.

Another option is to try Claimyr if the regular phone lines aren't working. A friend of mine used it recently and was able to get answers about her investigation status that she couldn't get through normal channels.

•A few people have mentioned Claimyr now. Might be worth looking into if I can't get through normally.

•I was skeptical about services like that but honestly anything beats sitting on hold for hours just to get hung up on.

Document everything - when you called, what you were told, any correspondence. If this drags on much longer you might need that information for an appeal or complaint.

•Good advice. I've been keeping notes but should probably be more detailed about it.

•Yes, dates and times especially. Also screenshot your account status regularly in case anything changes.

just want to say hang in there. i know 6 weeks feels like forever when youre stressed about money but most investigations do eventually get resolved

•Thanks, I needed to hear that. Some days I wonder if I'll ever see those benefits.

If you do get approved after a long investigation, make sure to double-check your backpay calculation. Washington ESD sometimes makes errors and you want to make sure you get every penny you're owed.
0 coins
Sophia Miller
•I'll definitely keep that in mind. Assuming I ever get approved at this rate.

•Stay positive! Most people do get approved eventually, especially for straightforward layoffs like yours.

The waiting is the worst part. I remember checking my account obsessively every day when I was going through my investigation. Try to find ways to stay busy and not think about it constantly.

•Easier said than done but I'll try. This whole process is so stressful.

One more vote for trying Claimyr if you're still having trouble getting through to Washington ESD. I used it a few months ago when I was dealing with an overpayment issue and the agent was able to explain exactly what was happening with my case.

•That's three recommendations for Claimyr now. I think I'll give it a shot since calling directly isn't working.

Keep filing those weekly claims! Can't stress this enough. Even if the investigation is ongoing, you need to maintain your filing schedule or you'll lose those weeks permanently.

•Yes, someone else mentioned this earlier. I'm going to catch up on all the weeks I missed filing. Thanks for the reminder!

Investigations are definitely taking longer these days. Mine was 7 weeks last spring and my coworker's was almost 10 weeks. Just the reality of the system right now unfortunately.

•Good to know I'm not alone in this. It helps to hear other people's timelines even if they're not great.
