How long do u need to work to get unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
hey everyone, i got laid off from my warehouse job last month and trying to figure out if i can even get unemployment. i worked there for about 8 months but before that i was doing gig work and odd jobs for like 6 months. does anyone know what the minimum work time is to qualify for Washington ESD benefits? im really stressing about this because rent is due soon and i have no idea if ill even get approved

You need to have earned wages in at least two quarters of your base period to qualify for Washington ESD unemployment benefits. Your base period is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim. It's not just about how long you worked, but how much you earned during those quarters.

•what counts as enough wages? i made like $15k total in those 8 months at the warehouse

•That should be enough if it was spread across two quarters. Washington ESD looks at your highest quarter earnings to determine your weekly benefit amount, and you need wages in a second quarter to establish eligibility.

I went through this same thing last year! The gig work might actually help you if you reported it properly on your taxes. Washington ESD considers all W-2 and 1099 income when calculating your base period wages. You should definitely apply - worst case they say no, but you might qualify.

•oh crap i dont think i reported all the gig work stuff properly... will that mess me up?

•It might make things more complicated during adjudication, but unreported income is more of a tax issue than an unemployment qualification issue. Just be honest on your application.

Honestly the hardest part isn't qualifying - it's actually getting through to Washington ESD to resolve any issues with your claim. I spent WEEKS trying to call them when my claim went into adjudication. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real person. They have this demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•Never heard of that, sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•They don't make you pay upfront or anything sketchy like that. It's just about getting through the phone lines when you actually need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

YOU GUYS ARE MISSING THE POINT!!! The system is designed to deny people benefits! They make the rules confusing ON PURPOSE so people give up! I had to fight for 3 months to get my benefits even though I worked full time for 2 years before getting laid off!

•thats not helping me figure out if i qualify though...

•The requirements are actually pretty straightforward. The confusion comes from people not understanding the base period calculation, not from Washington ESD trying to trick anyone.

Let me break this down clearly: For Washington ESD unemployment, you need wages in at least 2 quarters of your base period, and your total base period wages must be at least 680 times the state minimum wage (currently around $10,626 for 2025). Your highest quarter must have wages of at least $3,000. Based on what you described, you should qualify.

•ok that makes way more sense, thank you! should i apply right away or wait?

Vince Eh
•Apply immediately. There's a waiting week, and benefits are calculated from when you file, not when you lost your job. Don't delay.

•This is really helpful info, I've been putting off applying because I thought I needed to work for a full year or something

Pro tip: when you apply online through SecureAccess Washington, have your employment history ready for the past 18 months. Include dates, employer info, and gross wages. The more accurate you are upfront, the less likely your claim goes into adjudication.

•what happens if it goes into adjudication?

Adaline Wong
•Adjudication means they need to verify something about your claim - could be employment history, reason for separation, or wage discrepancies. It can take weeks to resolve and delays your benefits.

•That's when services like Claimyr become really valuable. Adjudication issues usually require talking to an actual Washington ESD representative, and getting through by phone is nearly impossible during normal business hours.

wait so the gig work counts towards the quarters? i did uber and doordash for like 4 months last year before getting my regular job

•Only if you paid into the UI system. Most gig work is 1099 contractor work, which doesn't qualify for traditional unemployment benefits. You'd need W-2 wages from actual employment.

•damn that sucks, i made good money doing that but it was all 1099

I'm in a similar situation but I got fired instead of laid off. Does that change the work requirements or just whether I qualify at all?

Vince Eh
•The wage/time requirements are the same regardless of how you lost your job. Being fired might affect your eligibility if it was for misconduct, but that's a separate determination from the monetary qualification.

•THEY'LL FIND ANY EXCUSE TO DENY YOU! Even if you get fired for something stupid like being 5 minutes late they'll call it misconduct!

•It wasn't misconduct, just company downsizing but they called it termination instead of layoff on my paperwork

One thing to keep in mind - even if you qualify monetarily, you'll need to meet the weekly requirements once you start receiving benefits. That includes registering with WorkSourceWA and doing job search activities. Make sure you understand those requirements before you start claiming.

Marcelle Drum
•how many jobs do you have to apply for each week?
0 coins
Tate Jensen
•The standard requirement is 3 job search activities per week, but it varies based on your individual reemployment plan. Activities can include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, etc.

•Keep detailed records of your job search activities! Washington ESD can audit your claims and ask for proof at any time.

update: just finished my application! it says my claim is pending and i should hear back within a few days. fingers crossed. thanks everyone for the help, especially the person who explained the quarter thing clearly

•Good luck! Remember to file your weekly claims even while it's pending, and don't be discouraged if it takes longer than a few days.

still bummed about the gig work not counting but at least i know now before wasting time applying

•You might still have other wage quarters that qualify you. Don't assume you're ineligible without actually checking your earnings history.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! Why should people have to jump through hoops just to get benefits they paid into with their taxes?!

Just wanted to add - if your claim does get complicated and you need to talk to Washington ESD, don't waste weeks calling like I did. That Claimyr service I mentioned earlier was a lifesaver. Sometimes you just need to actually speak to a human to sort things out.

Aria Khan
•How does that even work? Do they just keep calling for you?

•They have some system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold, then connects you when a real person picks up. Check out their demo video if you're curious.

For anyone else reading this thread later: the key takeaway is that Washington ESD unemployment eligibility is based on wage history in your base period quarters, not just how long you worked at your last job. You need wages in at least 2 quarters and minimum earnings thresholds. When in doubt, apply - the worst they can say is no.

anyone know if part time work affects the quarter requirements? i worked part time at two different places
0 coins
Vince Eh
•Part-time work counts the same as full-time for qualification purposes. It's all about the total wages earned in each quarter, regardless of hours worked.

•thats a relief, thank you!
