How long do I have to claim unemployment benefits after job loss in Washington ESD?

Just got laid off from my construction job last Friday and I'm trying to figure out the timing for filing my unemployment claim. I know there are deadlines but I'm getting conflicting info online. How long do I actually have to file my initial claim with Washington ESD? Is there a penalty if I wait too long? My supervisor said something about backdating but I don't really understand what that means. Any help would be appreciated.

You should file your unemployment claim as soon as possible after your last day of work. While Washington ESD allows you to backdate your claim up to one year, you'll lose benefits for any weeks you delay filing. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving payments.

So there's no hard deadline but I lose money the longer I wait? That makes sense. I was worried I'd miss some cutoff date.

Exactly. Each week you don't file is a week of potential benefits you're giving up. File online at esd.wa.gov as soon as you can.

I made this mistake when I got fired last year. Waited 3 weeks thinking I might get called back and ended up losing those three weeks of benefits forever. You can't get paid for weeks before you actually file your claim.

Ouch, that's expensive. I better get on this right away then.

Same thing happened to my brother. Lost like $1,800 because he procrastinated filing.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to file your claim, you might want to check out Claimyr at claimyr.com. They help people get connected to ESD agents when the phone lines are jammed. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

Thanks for the tip! The ESD website seems pretty straightforward but good to know there's help if I get stuck.

Is that service legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach ESD sometimes.

Yeah it's real. Used it myself when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Way better than hitting redial for 4 hours straight.

The backdating thing your supervisor mentioned - that just means ESD can set your claim start date to when you actually became unemployed, not when you filed. But you still lose the weekly benefit payments for any delay.

Got it, so backdating helps with the claim start date but doesn't give me the money I would have gotten if I filed earlier?

Correct. The benefit weeks are use it or lose it. That's why everyone says file ASAP.

Just file online, it takes like 20 minutes. Don't overthink it. The longer you wait the more money you're throwing away.

Yeah you're right. I'll do it tonight after dinner.

One more thing - make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file. You'll need dates of employment, wages, reason for separation, etc. Having everything organized will make the process smoother.

Good point. I have my last pay stub but I should probably dig up some other paperwork too.

Your employer should have given you a separation notice too. That has important info ESD needs.

Why does everyone wait to file? Just do it immediately when you lose your job. It's not rocket science.

Sometimes people think they might get called back or they're embarrassed about filing for unemployment. I get it.

Yeah I was hoping my boss might have more work next week but better safe than sorry.

I work in HR and I always tell people who get laid off to file their unemployment claim that same day if possible. Don't wait for severance pay or anything else to process. Get that claim started.

0 coins

That's really helpful to hear from someone who deals with this professionally. I'm definitely filing tonight.

Do you know if severance affects the unemployment benefits? I might be getting a small severance package.

0 coins

Severance can affect your benefits depending on how it's paid out. You should report it when you file your claim and let ESD determine the impact.

Filed mine 2 days after getting terminated and it was approved within a week. Don't stress too much about the process, just get it started ASAP.

That's encouraging! Hopefully mine goes as smoothly.

The one year backdate limit is important to remember too. If for some crazy reason you wait longer than a year, you're completely out of luck. But obviously don't wait anywhere near that long.

A whole year?? I can't imagine waiting that long but good to know the absolute limit.

I think that's for people who didn't know they were eligible or had some other unusual circumstance.

Another vote for using Claimyr if you need to talk to someone at ESD. The phone system is brutal and that service actually gets you through to a real person. Worth every penny when you're stressed about your claim.

Good to know there are options if I run into problems. Hoping the online filing goes smoothly though.

I waited 10 days to file because I was traveling when I got let go. Cost me about $600 in benefits. Learn from my mistake!

0 coins

Ouch, that hurts. I'll make sure to file tonight for sure.

You can file from anywhere as long as you have internet access. No excuse to wait these days.

The bottom line is file immediately and start your weekly claims right away. Don't give up free money by procrastinating.

Loud and clear! Thanks everyone for the advice. Really appreciate all the help.
