How long after termination can you file for unemployment with Washington ESD?

Got laid off from my warehouse job last Friday and wondering if there's a deadline for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. My supervisor said something about filing right away but I've been dealing with other stuff and haven't gotten around to it yet. Is there a cutoff date or penalty for waiting? I know I need to file weekly claims once I start but not sure about the initial application timing.

You should file as soon as possible! Washington ESD doesn't pay benefits for weeks before you file your initial claim, so every week you wait is money you're losing. There's no hard deadline but the sooner the better.

Thanks! I didn't realize it worked that way. I'll get on it today then.

0 coins

yeah i waited like 2 weeks after getting fired and lost out on those payments completely

0 coins

File immediately - like TODAY if possible. Your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you lost your job. I made this mistake years ago and it cost me hundreds of dollars in benefits I could never get back.

0 coins

Ugh that's what I was afraid of. Going to file right now.

0 coins

Wait so if I got terminated 3 weeks ago but just found out about UI benefits, I lose those 3 weeks completely?

0 coins

Unfortunately yes, Washington ESD can't backdate benefits to before your claim filing date except in very rare circumstances.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website is pretty clear about this - file within the first week after job loss if at all possible. I've been helping people with unemployment claims for years and this is the #1 mistake I see people make.

0 coins

Is there any situation where they'll backdate it? Like if you were in the hospital or something?

0 coins

Very limited circumstances like military deployment or serious medical emergencies, but you'd need documentation and it's not guaranteed.

I had a nightmare trying to get through to Washington ESD when I first filed. Kept getting busy signals and disconnected calls. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an actual agent - they have this video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of frustration.

0 coins

Never heard of that service. Did it actually work for you?

0 coins

Yeah, got through to an agent within like 20 minutes instead of spending all day redialing. Worth it when you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

0 coins

Interesting, I'll have to check that out. The phone system is absolutely terrible.

0 coins

file online at secure.esd.wa.gov its way easier than calling anyway. just need your SSN and employment info from last 18 months

0 coins

Good point, I'll do it online. Do I need pay stubs or just the employer info?

0 coins

just employer names addresses and dates worked. they'll verify wages with employers directly

0 coins

This is so stressful! I got let go 2 weeks ago and have been putting off filing because the whole process seems overwhelming. Now I'm finding out I've already lost 2 weeks of benefits?! This system is ridiculous.

0 coins

Don't stress too much about the lost weeks - just file now and focus on getting your weekly claims in on time going forward.

0 coins

I know it sucks but you can't change the past weeks. File today and at least you'll get benefits moving forward.

0 coins

You're right, I need to just do it instead of worrying about what I can't change.

0 coins

The Washington ESD system is designed to screw people over. They make it confusing on purpose so people miss deadlines and lose benefits. It's all about saving the state money at our expense.

0 coins

While I understand the frustration, it's really just about preventing fraud and ensuring benefits go to eligible claimants. The timing rules are pretty standard across states.

0 coins

Standard doesn't mean fair. Other states allow backdating in more situations.

0 coins

Quick question - does the job separation have to be the employer's fault to get benefits? I'm worried about filing if I might get denied anyway.

0 coins

You can file regardless of separation reason. Washington ESD will determine eligibility during adjudication. Even if you quit, you might qualify if it was for good cause.

0 coins

That's good to know. I'll file and let them decide rather than assuming I don't qualify.

0 coins

I filed 6 months after losing my job (didn't know about unemployment benefits) and they approved my claim but only from the date I filed. Lost half a year of potential benefits but better late than never I guess.

0 coins

Wow 6 months? That's a lot of money left on the table.

0 coins

Tell me about it. Probably lost around $8000 in benefits. Nobody told me unemployed people could get help.

0 coins

That's exactly what I don't want to happen. Filing today for sure.

0 coins

The key thing is your weekly claims have to be filed on time too once you start. Missing those can cause payment delays or denials even if your initial claim was timely.

0 coins

How often do the weekly claims need to be filed? Every Sunday?

0 coins

Weekly claims are due by 11:59 PM on Saturday night for the previous week. You can file starting Sunday morning.

0 coins

Been through this process twice now. First time I waited almost a month - big mistake. Second time I filed the Monday after getting laid off and had my first payment within 2 weeks. Timing really matters with Washington ESD.

0 coins

Did you have any issues with adjudication either time?

0 coins

Second time went through adjudication for about 3 weeks but no issues since the layoff was clearly employer-initiated due to budget cuts.

0 coins

Just want to echo what others said about Claimyr - used it myself when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Really helped to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD instead of waiting weeks for a callback that never came.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? Is it worth it?

0 coins

I thought it was worth it given how much time I was wasting trying to get through on my own. Check out their demo video to see if it makes sense for your situation.

Pro tip: gather all your employment information before starting the online application. Makes the process much faster and you're less likely to make mistakes that could delay your claim.

0 coins

What specific info do I need? I have my last pay stub but not sure what else.

0 coins

Employer names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of employment, and reason for separation for all jobs in the last 18 months. Also your Social Security card and ID.

0 coins

Don't forget to have your bank account info ready if you want direct deposit instead of the debit card option.

0 coins

washington esd is actually pretty good about processing claims quickly if you file online and have all your info ready. its the phone system thats terrible

0 coins

Agreed, the online system works well. It's only when you need to talk to someone that it becomes a nightmare.

0 coins

I waited 3 weeks after termination because I thought I had to use up my vacation pay first. Turns out that's not true - you can file immediately even if you're getting paid out vacation or severance.

0 coins

Really? I have 2 weeks of vacation pay coming. That won't affect my claim?

0 coins

It might affect your weekly benefit amount for those weeks but won't prevent you from filing the initial claim. Better to file and report the vacation pay than wait.

0 coins

Exactly right. Vacation pay gets reported on your weekly claims but doesn't prevent you from establishing your claim immediately.

0 coins

Bottom line: file NOW. Every day you wait is money you can't get back. The Washington ESD website has a pretty straightforward application process.

0 coins

Alright everyone convinced me. Logging on to file right now. Thanks for all the advice!

0 coins

Good luck! The hardest part is just getting started.

0 coins

One more thing - make sure you're available for work and actively seeking employment once you file. Washington ESD requires job search activities to maintain eligibility.

0 coins

How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

0 coins

Three job search activities per week minimum. Can be applications, networking, interviews, job fairs, etc. Keep good records.

0 coins

this thread convinced me to finally file too. got laid off last month and kept procrastinating. better late than never i guess

0 coins

At least you're doing it now! Don't beat yourself up about the timing.

0 coins

yeah just filed online took like 20 minutes. wish id done it weeks ago

0 coins

Thanks for posting this question OP. I'm in a similar situation and this thread has been super helpful. Filing my claim tonight.

0 coins

Glad my question helped others too. Just finished filing my claim - wasn't as complicated as I thought it would be.

0 coins

That's great! Now just stay on top of your weekly claims and job search requirements.

0 coins

For anyone still reading this thread - another option if you need to talk to Washington ESD is that Claimyr service mentioned earlier. I used it last week when I had questions about my job search log and got through to an agent pretty quickly.

0 coins

I'm definitely going to try that if I run into issues. The regular phone number is impossible.

0 coins

Same here. Anything has to be better than spending 4 hours on hold just to get disconnected.
