How does Washington ESD unemployment benefits work - need basics explained
I just got laid off from my job at a local restaurant after 2 years and everyone keeps telling me to file for unemployment but I honestly have no idea how any of this works. Like do I just apply online and they start sending me money? How much do you get? Do I have to look for jobs right away or can I take a break? My friend said something about weekly claims but I don't know what that means. I'm 24 and this is my first time dealing with unemployment so I'm pretty lost. Can someone explain the basics of how Washington ESD unemployment actually works?

First step is filing your initial claim on the Washington ESD website. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment info from the last 18 months. The system will calculate your weekly benefit amount based on your past wages - typically around 60-70% of what you were making, up to a maximum of about $999 per week in 2025.

•Do I need pay stubs or will they already have my wage info?

•Washington ESD gets your wage info from employers quarterly, but having recent pay stubs can help if there are any discrepancies.

After you file your initial claim, you have to file weekly claims every week to get paid. This means logging into your account every week and answering questions about whether you looked for work, if you worked any hours, etc. Miss a week and you don't get paid for that week.

•What kind of job search stuff do I have to do?

•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. Can be applying online, networking, going to job fairs, etc.

Just a heads up - don't expect money right away. My claim went into adjudication for like 6 weeks because they had to verify my separation reason. Getting through to Washington ESD on the phone is nearly impossible with their call volume.

•6 weeks?? How are people supposed to pay bills during that time?

•I had a similar issue with adjudication delays. Actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents when you can't reach them normally. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me weeks of trying to call.

The whole system is confusing as hell. I've been on UI twice and still get mixed up about the requirements. Make sure you understand the difference between being able to work and being available for work - they're not the same thing according to Washington ESD.

•What's the difference?

•Able means physically/mentally capable of working. Available means you're actively seeking work and can accept a job if offered. You need both to qualify.

Don't wait to file! You can't get benefits for weeks before you filed your claim, even if you were unemployed. File as soon as you lose your job.

•I got laid off last Friday, is it too late to file for that week?

Wesley Hallow
•No, file today! You can usually claim benefits starting the week you file, but don't delay any longer.

Also be prepared for Washington ESD to randomly audit your job searches. They can ask for proof of your 3 weekly contacts at any time, so keep good records.

•What kind of proof do they want?

•Company names, contact info, dates, method of contact, position applied for. I use a simple spreadsheet.

One thing that trips people up - if you work part-time while on unemployment, you have to report those earnings. They'll reduce your weekly benefit but you might still get some money depending on how much you earned.

•So I can work part-time and still get unemployment?

Grace Thomas
•Yes, but there's a formula. Generally if you earn less than 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount, you'll still get some unemployment money.

Honestly, I'd recommend trying Claimyr if you run into any issues reaching Washington ESD. Their phone system is overwhelmed and you can waste hours trying to get through. Claimyr made it super easy when I needed to check on my adjudication status.

•How much does something like that cost?

•I'd rather not get into pricing details, but it was worth it considering how much time I was wasting trying to call on my own.

Make sure you're honest on your weekly claims. They cross-reference with employers and if they catch you lying about working hours or job searches, you could get disqualified and have to pay back everything.

•Honest mistakes are usually fixable, but intentional fraud is serious. Always err on the side of reporting more rather than less.

the system is sooo slow and glitchy too, like it takes forever to load pages and sometimes kicks you out in the middle of filing your weekly claim

•Is there a better time to use the website?

Lauren Wood
•i usually try early morning or late evening when fewer people are online

Don't forget about WorkSourceWA either. Washington ESD might require you to register there for additional job search resources, especially if you're on unemployment for an extended period.

Brooklyn Foley
•Is that a separate website?

Ellie Lopez
•Yes, WorkSourceWA.com. It's the state's job search portal. Some people have to use it as part of their job search requirements.

I've been through this whole process and honestly the hardest part is just getting started. Once you understand the routine of weekly claims and job searches, it becomes pretty automatic.

•How long did it take you to get your first payment?

Chad Winthrope
•About 3 weeks for me, but that was without any adjudication issues. Could be faster or slower depending on your situation.

Just remember that unemployment is temporary assistance while you look for work, not a long-term solution. The maximum you can collect is usually 26 weeks in a benefit year.

•What if you don't find a job in 26 weeks?

•Then your regular unemployment benefits end. There are sometimes extended benefit programs during high unemployment periods, but don't count on them.

Also heads up that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them when you file your tax return.

•Should I have them withhold taxes?

•Probably a good idea unless you want a big tax bill next year. You can change this setting in your Washington ESD account.

The Washington ESD customer service is pretty much non-existent. I tried calling for weeks about an issue before someone mentioned Claimyr to me. Game changer for actually reaching a human who could help.

•I'm seeing Claimyr mentioned a few times - is it legit?

•Yeah, they just help you get through to Washington ESD's phone system. Check out their demo video if you want to see how it works.

One more tip - if you get disqualified for any reason, you can appeal the decision. You have 30 days from the date of the determination letter to file an appeal.

•What are common reasons people get disqualified?

•Quitting without good cause, getting fired for misconduct, not being available for work, failing to do adequate job searches.

Overall the system works but it's bureaucratic and slow. Just be patient, follow the rules, and keep detailed records of everything.

•Thanks everyone, this has been really helpful. I'll file my claim today.

Been on unemployment 3 times in my career and each time I learn something new about how confusing their rules are. But yeah, the basics are: file initial claim, file weekly claims, do job searches, report any work/earnings, be patient.

•Seems like a lot to keep track of but I guess you get used to it.

•You do. Just take it one week at a time and don't overthink it.
