Complete beginner - how does unemployment work in Washington state?
I just got laid off from my job at a tech company and I've never filed for unemployment before. I literally have no idea how any of this works. Do I just go online and apply? How much money do I get? How long does it take? I'm really stressed about paying my rent next month and I don't even know where to start with Washington ESD. Can someone please explain the basics of how unemployment works?

First things first - you need to file your initial claim as soon as possible. Go to esd.wa.gov and create an account. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the past 18 months, and bank info for direct deposit. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed.

•Thank you! Should I file even if I'm not sure I qualify? I was only at my last job for 8 months.

•Yes, definitely file. Washington ESD will determine if you qualify based on your total earnings in your base year, not just your most recent job.

The amount you get depends on your earnings history. Washington calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter in your base year. Maximum is around $999 per week in 2025, but most people get less. You can get benefits for up to 26 weeks typically.

•Wow, I had no idea it could be that much. How do they calculate the exact amount?

Edison Estevez
•They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then calculate about 3.85% of your total base year wages. It's complicated but the online calculator can help estimate it.

Just a heads up - if you can't get through to Washington ESD by phone when you need help, there's a service called Claimyr that can help you reach an agent. I used it when my claim got stuck and couldn't get anyone on the phone for weeks. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

•Is that legit? I'm worried about scams when I'm already stressed about money.

•Totally understand the concern. It's a real service that just helps you get through the phone queue. I was skeptical too but it actually worked when I was desperate.

•I've heard of that too. My sister used it when her claim was in adjudication for like 6 weeks.

Don't forget about the job search requirements! You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. This is super important - if you don't meet the requirements, they can deny your benefits.

•What counts as a job search contact? Just applying online?

•Applying for jobs, contacting employers directly, attending job fairs, networking events, even some training activities. Keep detailed records of everything.

ugh the whole system is so confusing. I remember when I first filed it took me like 3 tries to get the application right because I kept messing up the dates

•That makes me feel better that I'm not the only one confused by this!

•It's definitely overwhelming at first but once you get through the initial claim, the weekly claims are pretty straightforward.

Important timing info: After you file your initial claim, you need to file weekly claims every week to actually receive payments. You can't file these until after your first week of unemployment is complete. So there's usually a one-week waiting period before you see any money.

Joshua Hellan
•So I won't get paid for like 2-3 weeks even if I file today?

Edison Estevez
•Unfortunately yes, there's typically a delay. That's why filing immediately is so important - every day you wait adds to that delay.

Make sure you understand what disqualifies you too. If you quit without good cause or got fired for misconduct, you might not be eligible. Being laid off due to lack of work is usually fine though.

•I was definitely laid off, not fired. They eliminated my whole department due to budget cuts.

Emma Bianchi
•That sounds like a clear case of lack of work, so you should be fine on the eligibility front.

One thing that really helped me was registering with WorkSource WA. It's not always required but it gives you access to job search resources and sometimes they have requirements about using their services.

Joshua Hellan
•Is that a separate website or part of the unemployment system?

Lucas Kowalski
•It's worksourcewa.com - separate site but connected to the unemployment system. They help with job placement and career services.

Just be prepared for potential adjudication if there are any questions about your claim. That's when they need to investigate something and it can add weeks to the process. Hopefully yours will be straightforward though!

•What kind of things cause adjudication? Should I be worried?
0 coins
James Johnson
•Usually it's things like unclear reason for separation from work, or if there are questions about your availability. Since you were laid off clearly, you'll probably be fine.

•This is exactly when that Claimyr service I mentioned becomes really helpful - when you're stuck in adjudication and need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit right away in your claim. Getting paper checks takes forever and you really don't want extra delays when you're already waiting for money.

Joshua Hellan
•Good point, I definitely want the money as fast as possible. Can I change to direct deposit later if I forget?
0 coins
Olivia Martinez
•Yes you can change it later in your account settings, but it's easier to just set it up from the beginning.

Don't stress too much about making mistakes on the application. You can usually fix things later if needed. The important thing is to get that initial claim filed as soon as possible.

•Thank you, that's reassuring. I'm going to file tonight after I gather all my employment info.

Jibriel Kohn
•That's a good plan. Having all your info ready beforehand makes the process much smoother.

when I first filed I was so paranoid about doing something wrong that I called like every day trying to check on my claim status. Definitely learned that patience is required with this system lol

Joshua Hellan
•How long did your claim take to get approved?

Grace Patel
•Mine was pretty standard, about 2 weeks from filing to first payment. But some people wait longer if there are complications.

Remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later, but don't forget about them come tax time next year.

Joshua Hellan
•Oh wow, I didn't even think about taxes. Should I have them withheld?
0 coins
ApolloJackson
•It's usually easier to have them withheld so you don't owe a big chunk at tax time. You can set this up when you file your claim.

The Washington ESD website has a really good FAQ section that answers most basic questions. I'd recommend reading through that after you file your claim to understand the process better.

Joshua Hellan
•I'll definitely check that out. Are there any other good resources for understanding the system?

•The WorkSource WA site also has good info, and there are some YouTube videos that walk through the process step by step.

Just remember to file your weekly claims on time every week! I missed a week once and it was such a hassle to get it sorted out. Set a reminder on your phone or whatever works for you.

Joshua Hellan
•What day of the week do you file? Is there a specific day you're supposed to do it?
0 coins
Rajiv Kumar
•You can file anytime during the week for the previous week, but most people do it on Sunday or Monday. The system tells you exactly which week you're filing for.

If you have any issues reaching Washington ESD by phone - and trust me, you probably will at some point - that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier is actually pretty helpful. I was skeptical at first but it saved me hours of trying to get through on my own.

•Good to know there are options if I can't get through. Hopefully I won't need to call at all though!

•Hopefully! But it's good to know about resources like that just in case. The phone system can be really frustrating when you need help.

One last thing - keep records of everything! Save confirmation numbers, print out important pages, keep track of all your job search activities. Having good records makes everything easier if questions come up later.

Joshua Hellan
•That's great advice. I'm pretty organized so I'll make sure to keep everything documented.

Edison Estevez
•Absolutely this. Good record keeping can save you so much hassle down the road.

You've got this! The system seems really complicated at first but once you get your claim going it becomes routine. Focus on filing that initial claim first and then take it one week at a time.

•Thank you everyone for all the helpful advice! I feel much more confident about filing now.

•And remember, if you do need to reach Washington ESD by phone for any reason, that Claimyr service is there as backup. Hope you won't need it, but it's good to know about!
