How does unemployment work - confused about Washington ESD process
I just got laid off from my retail job and I'm completely lost about how unemployment benefits actually work. I've never had to file for unemployment before and the Washington ESD website is really confusing. Do I apply right away or wait? How much money do you get? How long does it take to get approved? I heard you have to look for work but what does that mean exactly? Can someone explain the basics of how this whole system works?

First thing - apply as soon as possible! Don't wait. You can file your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov. The amount you get depends on your wages from the last year, but it's usually around 60% of what you were making up to a maximum weekly amount. Right now the max is $999 per week in Washington.

•Thanks! Do I need to bring any documents or is it all online?

•You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and bank info for direct deposit. Have your most recent pay stub handy too.

The process is actually pretty straightforward once you understand it. You file the initial claim, then you have to file weekly claims every week to keep getting paid. Each week you report if you worked and how much you earned, plus you have to certify that you're looking for work.

•What counts as looking for work? Do I have to apply to a certain number of jobs?

•Yes, you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. This can be applying to jobs, networking, going to job fairs, etc. Washington ESD might audit your job search activities.

Just went through this whole process myself. One thing nobody tells you is that calling Washington ESD when you have questions is nearly impossible. I spent weeks trying to get through to someone when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Finally discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helps you actually reach a live agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved my sanity honestly.

•What's adjudication? My claim status just changed to that and I'm freaking out.

•Adjudication means they need to review something about your claim before approving it. Could be anything - how you lost your job, a wage discrepancy, whatever. It can take weeks unfortunately.

•Is Claimyr legit? Sounds too good to be true.

Been on unemployment twice in the last 5 years unfortunately. Here's what you need to know: file immediately, be 100% honest on everything, keep detailed records of your job search, and be patient. The system works but it's slow and bureaucratic as hell.

•How long before you get your first payment usually?
0 coins
Andre Dubois
•If everything goes smoothly, about 2-3 weeks after filing. But if they need to verify anything with your employer or if there's any complication, it can be months.

MONTHS?! Are you kidding me? How are people supposed to survive that long without income? This system is completely broken!

•I know it sucks but that's reality. That's why having an emergency fund is so important. Some people qualify for emergency assistance programs while waiting.

•It's not usually months unless there's a real problem with your claim. Most people get approved within a few weeks.

Let me break down the timeline for you: Week 1 - file initial claim, Week 2 - waiting week (no payment), Week 3 - first weekly claim, Week 4 - should receive first payment if approved. But you have to file weekly claims every single week even while waiting for approval.

•What's a waiting week?
0 coins
Aisha Rahman
•It's an unpaid week that everyone has to serve. You still file the weekly claim but don't get paid for that first week. It's just how the system works.

•That's so stupid. People need money immediately when they lose their job.

Don't forget about WorkSource! You might need to register there depending on your situation. They also have job search resources and sometimes required workshops.

•Is that separate from the Washington ESD website?

Zoe Alexopoulos
•Yes, WorkSource is the state's job search system. Some people have to register there as part of their unemployment requirements.

Back to the Claimyr thing - I was skeptical too but it actually worked. I'd been trying to call Washington ESD for 2 weeks straight, getting busy signals or hung up on. Used their service and got through to an agent the same day. Worth every penny when you're stressed about money.

•How much does it cost though?

Yuki Sato
•I'd rather not get into specific pricing but it was reasonable compared to the stress I was dealing with. They have different options depending on what you need.

Quick question - can you work part time while on unemployment?
0 coins
Aisha Rahman
•Yes but you have to report all earnings on your weekly claim. They'll reduce your benefit amount based on how much you earn. There's a formula they use.

Ethan Wilson
•Generally you can earn up to your weekly benefit amount before they start reducing your payment significantly. But report everything honestly.

This is all so overwhelming. I just want to know when I'll get some money so I can pay rent. My claim has been pending for 10 days now and I'm starting to panic.

•10 days isn't that long in unemployment world unfortunately. Keep filing your weekly claims and be patient. If it hits 3 weeks with no movement, then start making noise.

•That's exactly when I used Claimyr actually. My claim was sitting there with no updates and I needed answers. Got through to someone who explained what was happening with my case.

Been there OP. The key things: apply immediately, file weekly claims religiously, document your job search, and don't commit any fraud. The system will work eventually but you have to follow all the rules exactly.

QuantumQueen
•What kind of fraud are you talking about?
0 coins
Mei Liu
•Not reporting work or income, lying about being available for work, fake job searches, that kind of stuff. They do audit people and the penalties are severe.

Also important - if you get disqualified for any reason, you can appeal! Don't just give up. I got initially denied because of some paperwork issue but won my appeal.

QuantumQueen
•How long does an appeal take?

Liam O'Donnell
•Mine took about 6 weeks total. You get a hearing with a judge over the phone usually. Just be prepared with all your documentation.

6 WEEKS for an appeal?! This whole system is designed to discourage people from getting help. Absolutely ridiculous.

•I mean yeah it's frustrating but if you have a valid case it's worth pursuing. I got all my back pay once I won.

•The system definitely has problems but it does help millions of people. It's better than having nothing.

One more tip - take screenshots of everything! Your claim status, weekly claim confirmations, job search activities. If something goes wrong you'll want documentation.

•Good point. I'll start doing that right away.

•Yes! And save all correspondence from Washington ESD. Don't delete anything until your claim is completely closed.

For the job search requirement, make sure you're applying to suitable work. They define that as jobs in your field that pay at least 70% of your previous wage. Don't just apply to random jobs.

QuantumQueen
•What if there aren't enough suitable jobs in my area?

Zoe Alexopoulos
•Then you expand your search area or consider retraining programs. WorkSource can help with both options.

Last thing about Claimyr - I see people asking about it. It's basically a callback service that gets you connected to Washington ESD agents without sitting on hold forever. Really simple to use and they have good customer service if you have questions about how it works.

•Same here. The busy signal is driving me crazy.

OP - the most important thing is to start the process NOW. Every day you wait is money you're losing. The system isn't perfect but it does work for most people eventually.

Just remember unemployment is temporary assistance while you look for work. It's not meant to be permanent. Focus on your job search and use the time wisely.

•Easy to say when you're not the one trying to survive on $400 a week.

Quick tip - if you do gig work like DoorDash or Uber while on unemployment, you still need to report that income. Don't think they won't find out because they will.

•Good to know. I was thinking about doing some delivery work to make ends meet.

Dylan Cooper
•You can definitely do that, just be honest about the income. They'll adjust your weekly benefit accordingly but you won't lose eligibility.

Hope this all helps OP. The unemployment system in Washington is actually pretty decent compared to other states, even though it has its problems. Just be patient and follow the rules.
