Governor's office said they'd contact ESD about my claim - do they actually call back?
I've been desperately trying to resolve my unemployment claim for over 8 weeks now. Called ESD probably 30+ times, sent multiple secure messages, and even visited WorkSource in person. Nothing's working. My landlord is threatening eviction next week and I'm down to my last $180. In desperation, I contacted the Governor's office yesterday. The person I spoke with seemed genuinely concerned and said they would "specifically reach out to their direct contact at Unemployment to see what's holding up my claim" and promised to call me back within 48 hours because my situation is "dire". Honestly, I'm skeptical. Has anyone actually had the Governor's office call them back? Did they actually help resolve your claim issues? I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but I'm running out of options here. Any experiences (good or bad) would be appreciated!

Yes, they actually do call back! I had a similar situation back in January where my claim was stuck in adjudication for 6 weeks. I contacted my state representative AND the Governor's office on the same day. The Gov's office called me 2 days later and said they'd escalated my case. My claim was approved 4 days after that call. They have special liaisons that work directly with ESD on constituent issues. It's one of the most effective ways to get movement on a stuck claim, especially when your situation is urgent like yours sounds. Make sure your phone is charged and you answer any unknown numbers in the next couple days.

•Thank you! That gives me a little hope. Did they tell you what was actually holding up your claim? I'm so confused because I can't see any issues or alerts in my eServices account.

I work at a non-profit that helps people navigate benefit systems, and I can tell you the Governor's office CAN definitely help with ESD claims, but their effectiveness varies widely depending on who handles your case and how backed up ESD is at that moment. If they don't call back within the promised 48 hours, CALL THEM BACK immediately. Be polite but persistent. Ask specifically for the name of the person handling your case and request a direct extension if possible. Document the name of every person you speak with. What's likely happening with your claim is either 1) identity verification issues, 2) employer dispute, or 3) a system flag triggered by something in your application. Unfortunately, without seeing the exact status in the system (which agents can see but you can't), it's hard to know what's causing the delay.

•Thank you for this detailed response! I'll definitely call them back if they don't reach out within 48 hours. I'm pretty sure it's not an employer dispute because my former company has been cooperative. Could be identity verification although I submitted everything they asked for. I just wish they'd tell me what's wrong instead of leaving me in the dark.

•11 weeks is nothing lol. I waited 4 MONTHS last year. The system isn't rigged, it's just extremely inefficient and understaffed. But yelling about it online doesn't actually help anyone.

My sister had good luck with the governors office back during covid when her claim was stuck but I dont know if its the same now tbh. I think they're more overwhelmed? one thing to try - have you contacted your local state representative too? sometimes they can help even better than the governor

•That's a good idea - I hadn't thought of contacting my state rep. I'll look up their info right now. Thanks for the suggestion!

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to an ESD agent directly? I was in a similarly desperate situation last month with an adjudication that wouldn't resolve. After weeks of calling and getting nowhere, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual ESD agent in about 20 minutes - after I'd spent weeks trying on my own. The agent was able to see exactly what was holding up my claim (something that wasn't visible in my eServices account) and resolved it on the spot. They have a video demo of how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Might be worth trying while you wait for the Governor's office to call back. Having someone look directly at your claim sometimes reveals issues that aren't obvious.

One important thing to mention - when the Governor's office does call back, make sure you have all your claim information ready: 1. Your claim ID number 2. The exact date you filed the initial claim 3. A list of all the ways you've tried to contact ESD (with dates) 4. Any correspondence you've received from ESD 5. Details about your separation from your employer The more organized you are, the more efficiently they can help you. Also, be sure to emphasize the urgency of your financial situation again when they call. Sometimes these cases get prioritized based on severity.

Just wanted to update that I heard back from the Governor's office this morning! They said they've contacted their liaison at ESD, who confirmed my claim was flagged for "additional verification" but no one had been assigned to review it. The liaison manually assigned my case to an adjudicator who should be reaching out within 72 hours. I'm cautiously optimistic! I'll keep you all posted on what happens. Thanks for all the advice and support.

UPDATE: So the Governor's office actually did call me back today! Just 26 hours after I contacted them. The woman I spoke with was really helpful and said my claim had been flagged for wage verification (even though I submitted all my W-2s). She said she's emailed their direct contact at ESD and requested an expedited review because of my housing situation. She said it typically takes 3-5 business days after their intervention to see movement on a claim, but they'll be monitoring it and will call me again on Monday to check in. I'm still anxious but at least something is happening now! Will update again when I know more.

•This is exactly how it worked for me! The 3-5 day timeframe was accurate in my case too. Glad you're getting some traction finally.
