ESD website suddenly requiring identity verification with NO notification - claim on hold
So frustrated right now! I've been filing my weekly claims for 2 months without any issues, then suddenly this week when I logged in, there's this red banner saying my claim is on hold pending 'identity verification'. No email, no letter in the mail, no alert, NOTHING to tell me this was coming. I only found out because I happened to log in to check something else! Now I'm in a panic because it says I have only 5 days left to complete the verification process or my claim will be disqualified. Has this happened to anyone else? Why can't ESD just send a simple notification? This could have cost me my benefits if I hadn't randomly checked my account!

•Oh no, that's what I'm afraid of! Did you eventually get backdated payments for the weeks you missed because of their error?

This is unfortunately standard ESD procedure now. They randomly select accounts for additional verification but their notification system is broken. I work with claimants regularly, and about 70% report never receiving alerts for important claim changes. My advice: log in to your ESD account EVERY Monday regardless of when you file your weekly claim, just to check for these surprise requirements. Also, complete the ID verification ASAP - it can take 7-10 business days to process even though they only give you 5 days to submit it.

•Thank you, that's really helpful! Do you know what documents they typically accept for the identity verification? The instructions seem vague...

•They usually require a government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport) plus a secondary document like a utility bill, bank statement, or Social Security card that shows your name and address. Make sure all documents are clear and legible - I've seen them reject submissions just because the image quality wasn't perfect. And keep copies of everything you submit!

went thru this EXACT thing in january!!! esd is completely incompetent and doesnt care about us at all. the whole systems designed to make us give up. seriously who doesnt send notifications for something this important?? id be looking for work instead of dealing with this garbage if there were any jobs that paid more than minimum wage in my field right now

•Right?? They have our email, phone, AND mailing address but can't bother to use ANY of them. Pretty sure it's intentional - they're hoping people miss deadlines so they can deny benefits. Less money they have to pay out.

I'm an unemployment advocate, and this is one of the most common issues we see. The ESD system is supposed to send automatic notifications through multiple channels, but there's been a technical glitch in their system since January 2025 that prevents these alerts from going out. Some tips to handle this situation: 1. Complete the verification immediately - the 5-day countdown is strict 2. If you miss the deadline, file an appeal within 30 days citing "lack of proper notification" 3. Enable text alerts in your ESD account settings (though even these are unreliable) 4. Check your spam folder daily 5. Log into your account at least twice weekly The verification process itself usually takes 3-14 days, during which your weekly claims will show as "pending." You'll still need to file your weekly claims during this time even though payments are on hold.

•Thanks for this info. I've been dealing with the same issue and was told by an ESD agent that they're "aware of the notification problem" but have no timeline for fixing it. Ridiculous that we're expected to just randomly check for critical updates with no notification. Is this even legal?

After weeks of trying to get through to ESD about a similar issue (they required employment verification with no notification), I finally gave up on their regular phone line and used Claimyr (claimyr.com). You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 - it basically gets you through the phone queue to talk to an actual agent. The ESD rep I spoke with actually acknowledged their notification system is broken! She manually pushed my verification through and I got paid the next day. Might be worth trying if you get stuck in the verification process.

•Thank you! I'm submitting my documents today but if they get stuck in processing I might need this. Bookmarking that site just in case.

•does that actually work?? i thought it was a scam when i saw ads for it. the esd phone system is a nightmare, i tried calling 23 times yesterday and either got hung up on or was on hold for 2+ hours before having to hang up for work

Wait I'm confused... is this the ID.me verification or something different? Because I did the ID.me thing when I first applied back in February... are they making people do it AGAIN now?

•This is different from the initial ID.me verification. ESD now does random secondary verification checks throughout your claim period, especially if there are any changes to your claim or if your claim gets flagged by their automated system. It's completely separate from the ID.me process you completed when you first applied.

UPDATE: I submitted all my documents yesterday and just got an email saying my verification was approved! That was faster than I expected. All my pending payments were released too. For anyone else dealing with this: I submitted my driver's license (front and back), social security card, and a recent utility bill. Make sure your photos are clear and all text is readable.

•This is great news! You're right that processing times vary widely - I've seen anywhere from 24 hours to 3+ weeks. For anyone reading this thread later: if your verification isn't processed within 10 business days, call ESD directly and request a status update. Ask them to escalate if it's causing financial hardship.
