Identity verification stuck in ESD adjudication for 2 months - 7 payments missed!

I'm beyond frustrated with ESD right now! I got laid off from my construction job in January and immediately filed for unemployment. My initial claim was approved and I started filing my weekly claims right away. But here's where it got messed up - apparently I never completed the ID verification process (even though I swear I submitted everything when I first applied). On February 12th, I got a letter saying I was DISQUALIFIED because they couldn't verify my identity. I immediately uploaded my driver's license, social security card, and a utility bill through their secure portal. My claim status changed to "adjudication in progress - identity verification" and it's been stuck there for 7 WEEKS! I've sent 3 messages through eServices with zero response. Every time I try calling, I get the "high call volume" message and then get disconnected - not even put on hold! Meanwhile, I've dutifully kept filing my weekly claims (going on 7 weeks now) but haven't received a single payment. I'm burning through my savings and starting to panic about rent next month. Does anyone know how to actually get ESD to look at the identity documents I sent? Or some secret way to get through to a human on the phone? At this point I'd drive to an office in person if that would help (I'm in Tacoma area). Any advice appreciated!

omg this exact same thing happened to me back in november!!! my claim status was stuck in adjudcation for identity verification for like 6 weeks and i couldn't get thru on phones either. it's so frustrtaing!!! i finally got someone to look at my stuff but only after my state representative got involved. i emailed my district rep and told them i was about to be evicted and they contacted ESD directly. my claim was fixed within 3 days after that. might be worth trying???

Thank you so much for the suggestion! I hadn't even thought about contacting my representative. Did you just find their email on the state legislature website? I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point.

The ID verification issues are unfortunately very common with ESD right now. They implemented a new verification system in late 2024 that's been causing these exact problems. Here's what I recommend: 1. Continue filing your weekly claims (which you're doing - good) 2. Try calling precisely at 7:59am right before they open at 8:00am 3. Make sure your uploaded documents meet these requirements: - Color images (not black and white) - All four corners visible - No glare or shadows - File size under 3MB but resolution at least 300dpi Sometimes the documents get rejected for technical reasons but the system doesn't tell you. It might be worth uploading them again with these specifications. Also, check your spam folder daily - ESD sometimes sends verification emails that get filtered.

I didn't know about all those document requirements! I think I submitted black and white scans of my ID. I'll definitely try uploading color versions tonight. And I'll set my alarm for the early morning call trick. Thank you for the detailed advice!

lol good luck getting ESD to do ANYTHING!! ive been dealing with them for months and they are useless!!! they will make u jump through 100 hoops and then still deny u for no reason. the system is designed to make people give up!!! they dont care about helping regular people AT ALL.

While I understand your frustration, this isn't particularly helpful to the OP who is genuinely seeking solutions. Many of us have successfully navigated the ESD system despite its challenges.

I went through this exact situation in January. The identity verification adjudication can be very frustrating and time-consuming. Here's what worked for me: I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an ESD agent on the phone. They basically hold your place in line so you don't have to keep redialing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Once I got through to a live person, they were actually very helpful. The agent could see my documents in the system and manually approved my identity verification while I was on the phone. All my pending payments were released within 48 hours. Before that, I was waiting for almost 6 weeks with no response. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to get these things resolved.

This sounds promising! I hadn't heard of Claimyr before. It would be worth it just to talk to an actual person after all these weeks. I'm going to look into this right away. Did they need any special information from you when you called?

Just have your claim ID number ready, and they'll ask for your name and SSN to verify your identity. Also be prepared to explain that you've already uploaded your documents and are waiting for them to be reviewed. The agent might ask you when you submitted them, so know those dates.

have u tried going to worksource? sometimes the ppl there can help u with esd stuff or at least give u better advice than the website. my cousin got his claim fixed by talking to someone at the worksource office in auburn.

That's a good idea! There's a WorkSource office not too far from me. Do you know if I need an appointment or can I just walk in?

i think u can just walk in but maybe call first? not sure if all offices are the same

The identity verification backlog is a known issue with ESD. I've found that sending a secure message through eServices using very specific language can sometimes escalate your case. Try sending a message with the subject line "Hardship Request - Identity Verification Adjudication" and in the body mention: 1. The exact date you submitted your documents 2. List specifically which documents you provided 3. State clearly that you're experiencing financial hardship due to the delay 4. Request expedited processing due to financial hardship I've also had success calling the Technical Support line (855-682-0785) rather than the main claims line. They technically can't help with claim issues, but sometimes they'll transfer you directly to an adjudicator if you explain your situation. Lastly, if you're eligible for a Hardship Adjudication Waiver due to housing or food insecurity, explicitly request that in your message.

Thank you for the detailed advice! I'm going to draft a hardship request message tonight with all the specifics you mentioned. I hadn't thought about trying the technical support line either - that's a great workaround. I really appreciate the help!

Wait did you move recently? My cousin had the same problem and it turned out his address didn't match on all his documents cuz he moved. ESD is super picky about that stuff. Might be worth checking.

I did move about 8 months ago, but I updated my license. Though now that you mention it, my social security card still has my old address... I wonder if that's causing the problem. I'll definitely mention this when I talk to them. Thanks for pointing this out!

I want to follow up on my earlier comment. If you've been waiting 7+ weeks for ID verification, you should absolutely request an escalation. Contact your state legislative district's representatives - both your House reps and Senator. You can find them here: https://app.leg.wa.gov/districtfinder/ Send them all an email explaining your situation, including: - Your full name - Your claim ID number - Date you applied - Date you submitted ID documents - Brief description of your financial situation Legislative inquiries typically get fast-tracked at ESD. I've seen cases resolved within 1-2 business days after a legislator's office gets involved. Also, make sure to include in your weekly claims that you're actively looking for work and completing at least 3 job search activities each week. That will prevent any additional issues once your ID verification is resolved.

Thank you for the follow-up! I found my representatives and drafted an email to send tomorrow morning. And yes, I've been diligently recording my 3 job search activities each week. I'm actually interviewing for a position next week, but even if I get it, I'll still need those back payments to catch up on bills. I really appreciate all the help everyone's provided here.
