ESD sent my personal claim letter to my ex-employer instead of me - privacy concern?
Has anyone else had this happen? I just got a letter from ESD about my unemployment claim, but it was delivered to me through my former employer! The letter had MY NAME at the top like it was meant for me directly, but somehow ESD sent it to my ex-employer who then forwarded it to me. This seems like a huge privacy issue - the letter contained personal details about my claim that I don't want my former workplace seeing. Plus, I provided my correct mailing address AND email when I filed my initial claim in January, so there's no reason they couldn't contact me directly. Is this normal procedure for ESD or did they mess up? And should I be concerned about what other personal info might be going to my former employer instead of me? I'm really uncomfortable with this whole situation.

This definitely shouldn't be happening. ESD is required to keep your claim information confidential. When you file a claim, your former employer is notified about the claim itself (that's normal), but subsequent communications about your specific case details should be sent directly to you, not through them. I'd recommend calling ESD immediately to report this privacy issue and make sure your contact information is correct in their system. Also ask them to document this incident.

omg the SAME thing happened to me last month!! my determination letter went to my old job and my boss texted me about it. super awkward since they contested my claim and could see i was approved anyway. i think esd is just really disorganized right now tbh

I worked in HR for years and can tell you this is most likely a clerical error. Sometimes ESD's system accidentally sends claimant letters to the employer address instead of the claimant address, especially if they're processing a high volume of claims. It happens when their system pulls the wrong address field. This IS a privacy concern though, and you should absolutely contact ESD to report it. They need to correct this in their system so future communications go to the right place. The employer is notified about initial claims and has access to some information, but detailed determinations and personal communications should go directly to you.

•not always an error tho...ESD purposely sends some stuff to employers. they gotta verify your work history and wages and stuff. my boyfriend got his denial sent to him directly but his employer got a copy too.

•You're right that employers receive certain notifications - they get copies of initial claim notices, wage verification requests, and sometimes determination letters that affect the employer's account. But letters addressed specifically to the claimant with their personal claim details (like what OP described) should not be sent exclusively to the employer. There should at minimum be a copy sent directly to the claimant.

If you're concerned about the privacy issue (which is valid), I recommend using Claimyr to get through to an ESD agent quickly. I was dealing with a different issue last month and spent days trying to reach someone without success. Used Claimyr and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes. the ESD system is COMPLETELY BROKEN!! they sent my neighbor's benefits card to ME last summer and we don't even have similar names!!! i had to track him down and give it to him. the whole department needs to be investigated for incompetence!!!

•That's actually concerning from a fraud perspective. If benefit cards are being sent to wrong addresses, it creates opportunities for identity theft. Did you report this to ESD when it happened?

•i tried!! sat on hold for 2 hours and then got disconnected!!! gave up after that and just gave the guy his card directly. ESD doesn't care AT ALL about fixing these problems!!!

UPDATE: I finally got through to ESD this morning! The agent confirmed this was definitely an error. Apparently there was a glitch in their system where some letters for claims filed in January 2025 had the delivery addresses mixed up. She flagged my account to make sure future communications come directly to me and said they're aware of the issue and working on fixing it systemwide. She also noted that while employers do get notified about claims and some general determination info, they shouldn't be receiving my detailed claim correspondence. She's escalating this as a privacy concern to their IT department. Thanks everyone for your help and confirming I wasn't overreacting about this!

•No, they didn't mention sending any notification when it's fixed. But the agent did put detailed notes in my account about the issue and said all future correspondence will be double-checked for correct addressing. Better than nothing I guess!
