ESD showing wrong employer on my weekly claim - how to remove old employer I never got laid off from?

I just filed my waiting week claim today and I'm confused about something. The ESD system is showing an old employer that I haven't worked for in like 2 years! I voluntarily left that job (didn't get laid off) and moved on to my current employer who actually DID lay me off last week due to budget cuts. How do I remove this old employer from my claim? I'm worried that having this incorrect employer info might cause problems with my claim or delay my benefits. Has anyone dealt with this before? I don't want ESD contacting my old employer since that's not even relevant to my current unemployment situation.

omg same thing happened to me!!! the esd system keeps old employers in their database and sometimes shows them when u file. dont panic, as long as u report your earnings correctly for each week it shouldnt matter. but yeah its confusing af

Thanks for responding! So it won't affect my benefits? I'm just worried they might contact my old employer who'll say "this person wasn't laid off, they quit" and then somehow my whole claim gets denied.

This is a common issue with the ESD system. When you file a claim, ESD pulls your wage history from the past 18 months (your base year), but the system sometimes shows employers from even further back. What matters most is that you correctly identify which employer laid you off recently. To fix this, you should: 1. Call ESD and explain the situation 2. Ask them to update your claim to reflect the correct separating employer 3. Make sure they know which employer actually laid you off This is important because the reason for separation affects your eligibility. If you don't correct this, ESD might investigate the wrong employer and potentially delay or deny your claim.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I've been trying to call ESD but can't get through - just endless busy signals or the automated system hangs up after saying they're experiencing high call volumes. Any tips for actually reaching a human?

I've had success using a service called Claimyr to get through to ESD when dealing with employer issues on my claim. It helped me connect with an agent without spending hours on hold. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. Basically they hold your place in line and call you when an agent is available. Saved me a ton of frustration when I had a similar issue with an old employer showing up on my claim.

YES ITS LEGIT! I used it last month when my claim was stuck in adjudication for WEEKS! Got through to ESD in like 30 minutes when I had been trying for DAYS on my own. Worth every penny when ur bills are piling up and u cant get anyone to help u!!

The ESD system is such garbage. Why should we have to pay extra just to access a government service our taxes already fund? The whole unemployment system is designed to be frustrating so people give up. I've been dealing with this for 6 weeks now and keep getting different answers every time I manage to talk to someone.

Back to the original question - you don't actually need to "remove" the old employer from your claim history. What's important is making sure ESD understands which employer is your most recent and that they correctly identify the reason for separation (layoff). When you file weekly claims, you'll only need to report job search activities or any new earnings. The old employer info is just part of your wage history that ESD uses to calculate your benefit amount. As long as your most recent employer is correctly identified as a layoff, you should be fine. If you want to be 100% sure, when you reach an agent, ask them to verify that your "separating employer" is correctly listed. That's the important designation that affects your eligibility.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'll try to reach an agent to confirm the separating employer is correct. I'm just worried because I know my old employer would definitely say I quit (which I did), and I don't want that affecting my current claim since I was legitimately laid off from my recent job.

when i had this happen the esd lady told me they only care about employers in your "base year" which is like the last 5 quarters or something before you filed. so if that old job was before your base year it doesnt even matter. but yeah call and make sure the right info is there about your recent employer thats the important part

That's exactly right. The base year is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim. Only employment during that period affects your claim. If your old employer falls outside that timeframe, they're irrelevant to your current claim.

I had a kinda related issue whre ESD kept sending letters to an employer I worked at for like 3 weeks as a temp job. They were suuuuper confused and kept calling me about it even tho I had a full time job after that for 2 years which was the one that actually laid me off! The system is so weird sometimes lol. But I eventually got it sorted by talking to an agent on the phone who fixed it in their system.

Glad you got it sorted out! I'm going to keep trying to reach someone. I've been trying all week without success but I'll try early Monday morning when they first open. Thanks everyone for the help and advice!
