ESD sending out mysterious letters - can't access ESD eServices after years of inactivity
OMG I just got a notification about a letter in my ESD eServices inbox today and I'm freaking out!!! I haven't filed for unemployment since early 2020 during the first Covid shutdown. When I try to log in to see what it is, my account seems totally deactivated or something? The system doesn't recognize my password and when I try to reset it, I don't get the email. Has this happened to anyone else? Why would ESD be contacting me after like 5 years of nothing?? I'm worried they think I owe money or something. Should I just ignore it or actually try to call them (ugh)? Really don't need this stress right now!

This is actually happening to a lot of people right now. ESD is doing an account review and system update, so they're sending notices to people who had claims during Covid. Many are getting overpayment notices or requests to verify identity even years later. Don't ignore it - these issues only get worse with time. Your account is probably locked due to inactivity or the recent system migration.

•Ugh seriously?? That's so annoying. Do you know if these are actually legitimate overpayment claims or just some kind of system error they're making? I reported everything correctly back then!

got the same thing last week. turned out to be an overpayment notice for $2,750 from 2020!!! claimed i didn't report some income correctly which is BS. my account was also locked and took 3 days to get back in.

•WHAT?! That's terrifying. I definitely don't have $2-3k just sitting around to pay them back for some mistake from 5 years ago. Did you get it resolved or are they making you pay?

Don't panic yet! I recommend trying these steps to access your account: 1. First, try clearing your browser cache and cookies completely 2. Use the "Forgot Username" option instead of password reset 3. Check if your email address has changed since 2020 4. Try logging in with your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) credentials instead If none of those work, you'll need to contact ESD directly. These letters often have deadlines to respond (typically 30 days), so don't put it off too long.

•Thanks for the suggestions! I tried all of those but still no luck getting in. I completely forgot about the SAW login - tried that too but it says my account is inactive. Seems like I'll have to actually call them... dreading that process.

I work with unemployment claims frequently, and this is definitely part of ESD's system-wide review that started in January 2025. They're reviewing all Covid-era claims for potential fraud and overpayments before the statute of limitations expires. For locked accounts, you need to call the technical support line at 855-682-0785, not the regular claims line. Ask specifically for account reactivation. They'll verify your identity and either restore access or mail you a temporary password. If it is an overpayment notice, don't ignore it! You have appeal rights, and there are also waiver options for Covid-era overpayments if the overpayment wasn't your fault. But you must respond within the deadline on the notice.

•tried that number 5 times this week. always says "due to high call volume we cannot take your call" then hangs up. how are we supposed to fix this if they wont even answer???

•You're right, their phone system is completely overwhelmed right now. If you're getting hung up on, your best option is to try calling right when they open at 8:00 AM or use their online message center (though that requires account access). Some people have had success getting through by using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that calls ESD for you and connects you when an agent is available. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 I've heard from several clients that it saved them hours of redial frustration during this system update chaos.

Do NOT ignore this!!! I ignored a similar letter last year thinking it was spam or something minor, and ended up with a tax garnishment because it was actually an overpayment notice that I never responded to. ESD doesn't play around - they'll get their money one way or another if they believe you owe. If you really can't access your account or reach them by phone, send a physical letter via certified mail to the ESD Appeals Office explaining that you've been unable to access your account to view the notice. Include your full name, last 4 of SSN, address, and contact info. This creates a paper trail showing you attempted to respond.

•Oh no, that's awful! Thanks for the warning. I definitely don't want to end up with garnished wages or something. I'll try calling again tomorrow morning, and if that doesn't work, I'll send a certified letter like you suggested.

this happened to me to. the letter was about some job search audit from 2020!! they claiming I didnt do enough job searches even tho the requirement was waived during covid??? make it make sense lol. such a joke.

•That's definitely incorrect. Job search requirements were officially waived from March 8, 2020 through July 4, 2021. If they're auditing job searches from that period, it's an error you can appeal. Make sure to reference the official emergency rules (WAC 192-140-005) in your response.

UPDATE: Finally got through to ESD this morning after trying when they first opened! The letter was actually about potential identity theft - someone tried to file a new claim using my information, which triggered their security system. The rep helped me secure my account and file a fraud report. So glad I didn't ignore this! They said there's been a wave of fraud attempts targeting old Covid-era accounts. Everyone should check their accounts and make sure their contact info is up to date.

•Thanks for updating us! That's actually the third case I've heard about identity theft attempts triggering these notices. Glad you got it resolved and there wasn't an overpayment issue. For anyone else seeing this - definitely worth checking your account security and updating passwords if you haven't logged in since 2020.

•No problem! Yeah, the rep said they've seen hundreds of these cases in the last month alone. Apparently fraudsters are trying to use old account info that might have been exposed in data breaches. So scary!
