ESD payment says 'paid' status but nothing in Chase bank account yet - normal delay?

So my ESD weekly claims finally changed from 'processing' to 'paid' status yesterday afternoon (after being stuck for what felt like forever!). I was super relieved, but checked my Chase bank account this morning and there's still nothing there. I've heard different things about deposit times - is there a normal delay between when ESD marks it as 'paid' and when it actually hits Chase accounts? This is my first time filing for unemployment since getting laid off from my construction job, so I'm not sure what to expect. Bills are piling up and I'm getting a bit anxious about when the money will actually be available. Thanks for any info!

Thanks for the quick response! That's reassuring. I'll try to be patient and check again tomorrow morning.

The timing depends on when ESD actually initiated the ACH transfer. If your claim shows 'paid' status but the transfer was initiated late in the day, most banks (including Chase) won't process it until the next business day cycle. Then Chase typically holds electronic deposits for 24 hours for verification. So it's completely normal to see a 1-2 business day delay from when the status changes to 'paid' until when you can access the funds. Also worth noting that if yesterday was a Friday, you might not see it until Monday or even Tuesday depending on how their systems process weekend transfers. This is standard for most unemployment direct deposits.

This is really helpful info, thank you! Yesterday was Wednesday so hopefully I'll see it hit my account by Friday then. The ESD website doesn't really explain these timing details so I appreciate you breaking it down.

DONT PANIC YET!!!! Mine ALWAYS takes 48 hours with Chase after it says "paid" on the ESD site. They're sooooo slow compared to my old credit union which was same day. Chase holds EVERYTHING for "processing" which is just their way of making interest off our money for an extra day or two. It's super annoying but you'll get used to it. If it still doesn't show by Friday morning THEN you can start worrying!

This isn't entirely accurate. Chase isn't arbitrarily holding funds to earn interest - there are federal regulations (Regulation CC) that govern fund availability timeframes for financial institutions. All banks have similar hold policies for ACH transfers, especially for government payments which require verification protocols.

My sister banks with Chase and hers always posts by midnight the same day it shows paid. Maybe call Chase customer service? Sometimes they can see pending deposits before they show up in your account.

The timing actually varies a lot depending on which day of the week the payment is processed and what time of day ESD initiates the batch. I've been on unemployment twice (once during COVID and again last fall), and with Chase specifically, I've seen it take anywhere from same-day to 2 business days. The most consistent pattern is that payments that hit 'paid' status before noon tend to deposit faster than those that change status later in the day. One thing to keep in mind - your first payment often takes longer than subsequent ones. The system seems to need to verify your account information the first time through.

If you're really concerned about the delay, you might want to check if there are any issues with your claim or payment method. When my payments were delayed beyond the typical timeframe, it turned out there was an address verification issue that wasn't clearly indicated on my ESD account. If you've been trying to reach ESD for this or any other unemployment issues and can't get through on the phone lines, I've had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that helps you connect with ESD agents much faster than waiting on hold for hours. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 But for your current situation, I'd wait the full 2 business days before worrying. Chase is notoriously slower with government deposits compared to some other banks.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll give it the full 2 days first, but if I run into any other issues with my claim, that service might come in handy. I tried calling ESD when my claim was stuck in processing and couldn't get through at all, so something that helps with that would be useful if I need it in the future.

Yes! It finally showed up this morning in my account. Looks like it took exactly 2 business days from when the status changed to 'paid'. Thanks everyone for the help and reassurance!
