ESD fraud department contact info needed - Received weird benefits I didn't apply for
I received a letter from ESD yesterday saying I was approved for benefits, but I never applied for unemployment! I'm still working full-time at my job. I'm worried someone is using my identity to claim benefits. I tried looking through the ESD website for where to report this but got frustrated with all the different phone numbers. Does anyone know the direct number to call for reporting potential fraud? Not sure if this is technically fraud or identity theft but I need to talk to someone in that department ASAP before this affects my taxes or credit.

You need to contact the ESD fraud department right away. The official number is 800-246-9763. You can also report it online at esd.wa.gov/fraud. Make sure you keep copies of any letters you received and document when you call. This is definitely identity theft and you should also consider placing a credit freeze with the major credit bureaus.

•Thank you so much! I'll call that number first thing tomorrow morning. Do you know if they're going to make me pay back money I never received? I'm really worried about this messing up my taxes next year.

•Six months?! That's terrifying. Did your cousin have to keep calling them to check status or did they actually follow up?

I work in HR and we're seeing this ALL THE TIME now. Here's what you need to do: 1. Report to ESD fraud (800-246-9763) 2. File an identity theft report with the FTC at identitytheft.gov 3. Contact all three credit bureaus to place a fraud alert 4. File a police report with your local department 5. Notify your employer's HR department Don't panic about owing taxes - once ESD confirms the fraud, they'll issue a corrected 1099 or documentation showing you weren't the actual recipient.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I didn't even think about contacting HR at my job. I'll do that tomorrow too.

If you're having trouble getting through to ESD (which is VERY likely), I'd recommend using Claimyr. It helped me get through to an actual person after trying for weeks. Their system calls ESD for you and connects you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of redial hell. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 and sign up at claimyr.com. For fraud issues especially, you really need to talk to a human.

•Thanks for the tip. I'm going to try calling directly first but if I can't get through I'll definitely check this out. Did you have to wait long when using this service?

•I still had to wait on hold, but the difference was I didn't have to spend hours redialing only to get busy signals or disconnects. Their system basically does the redialing part for you and calls you when it gets through. For me it took about 45 minutes from start to finish versus the 3+ days I spent trying on my own.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! ESD doesn't care about identity theft victims AT ALL. I've been dealing with this for 9 MONTHS and they still send me notices saying I owe money back for benefits someone else collected. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING and send all communication certified mail!!

•While I understand your frustration, sending certified mail isn't necessary for most fraud cases. Email communications are tracked in their system, and phone calls are logged with case numbers. The most important thing is keeping a personal record of all communication dates, times, and representative names. The system isn't perfect, but most fraud cases are resolved within 8-12 weeks if properly reported.

•That's what they TOLD ME too and guess what? They "lost" my documentation TWICE! And then tried to garnish my wages!! Maybe YOU got lucky but I'm telling OP the TRUTH about how bad it really is!!!

When I had this problem the frustrating part was I kept getting transferred between departments. The main ESD line would transfer me to fraud, fraud would transfer me to claims, claims would say it's a fraud issue... round and round. Make sure you clearly explain it's an identity theft situation right away so they route you correctly.

•That sounds awful. Did you eventually get it resolved? Any tips for making sure I get to the right person?

•Yes, eventually! What worked was saying "I need to report identity theft where someone filed an unemployment claim using my identity" right at the beginning. Also, I wrote down the name of every person I spoke with and referenced previous conversations. That seemed to make them take it more seriously.

just wonderin but did u change jobs recently? sometimes when u leave a job they automatically file for u even if u got a new job already. happened to my brother in law and it wasnt actually fraud just a mistake

•No, I've been at the same company for 4 years. I definitely didn't apply for benefits and my employer hasn't laid anyone off recently, so I'm pretty sure it's fraud.

One more important thing - when you call the fraud line, specifically request that they flag your account with a "fraud indicator." This will prevent any further claims from being automatically processed under your name. Also ask them to issue you a fraud investigation case number that you can reference in follow-up calls.

•Thank you! I would never have known to ask for that. I'm making a list of all these questions to ask when I call tomorrow.

Quick update for those following this thread - ESD has actually created a specific Identity Theft form to streamline these reports. Go to esd.wa.gov, search for "Unemployment benefits fraud" and look for the secure form upload option. You'll need to provide ID documentation, but it creates a direct case in their system rather than relying on phone calls.

•I just checked and found the form! I'm going to submit that tonight and then follow up with a call tomorrow. Thank you so much for mentioning this!
