ESD benefit recertification stuck - timeline disappeared after adjudication changes

I'm feeling so lost with this recertification process. I was laid off in September 2024 after needing emergency surgery and taking PFML. My employer eliminated my position while I was recovering. I qualified for unemployment and started receiving benefits, but they ran out in November (even though the ESD dashboard shows I still have more than half my benefit amount remaining). The system told me I needed to "recertify" to continue. I submitted everything 3 weeks ago, and the status has been weird - first it showed "waiting for information" AND "adjudication" together, then the adjudication disappeared, now adjudication is back but the "waiting for information" message is gone. I'm confused about how this recertification works and how long it normally takes. Does anyone know what's happening with my claim? Is this timeline normal? The ESD website doesn't explain the recertification process at all, and I really need these benefits to continue.

Same thing happened to my brother when he had to recertify last month!! His status kept changing back and forth between adjudication and waiting for info too. He ended up waiting almost 5 weeks before it finally got approved again. The ESD systems are SO frustrating!!!!

5 weeks?? Ugh that's so long! Did he do anything special to get it moving or just wait it out?

It sounds like what you're experiencing is a standard part of the recertification review process. When your benefit year expires but you still have funds remaining, ESD has to verify you still qualify under current eligibility standards. The disappearing/reappearing adjudication status usually indicates your claim is being transferred between different departments for review. This typically happens when: 1. They're verifying your separation reason from the most recent employer 2. Cross-checking with your PFML claim to ensure no benefit overlap 3. Confirming your ability and availability to work now The average wait time for recertification decisions is 3-5 weeks, but it can take longer if they need to contact your former employer for additional information. Have you checked your notices/letters section in eServices? Sometimes they request information there without updating the main status.

Thanks for explaining! I checked my notices section and there's nothing new there. I guess I just need to keep waiting and hope it resolves in the next couple weeks. Is there any way to check the specific status of the adjudication?

Recertification is basically like filing a brand new claim, except they use your old monetary determination. The problem is they still have to adjudicate your separation from the most recent employer all over again, which is why you're seeing that status. The system is extremely backed up right now with year-end claims. I wouldn't worry about the status messages changing - their system does that all the time. Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims during this waiting period so you don't miss out on any payments once they approve the recertification.

Thanks - I wasn't sure if I should keep filing weekly claims while waiting! I'll make sure to do that.

I went through this exact situation last year when my recertification got stuck for almost 6 weeks. The status messages on the dashboard aren't reliable at all - they shuffle between different statuses as the claim moves between departments. What worked for me was getting through to an actual ESD agent who could see what was happening behind the scenes. After weeks of calling the main number and getting disconnected, I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent within about 20 minutes. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent was able to see my recertification was just sitting in a queue and needed to be manually moved forward. Within 3 days after that call, my claim was approved and I got all my back payments.

I've never heard of Claimyr before! I'll check out the video. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get through to someone who can actually tell me what's happening with my claim.

There's some confusion in this thread about recertification vs. starting a new benefit year. Let me clarify: Recertification generally happens when your benefit year expires but you still have a remaining balance. A benefit year is the 52-week period that begins when you file your initial claim. When you recertify, ESD evaluates: 1. If you've worked and earned enough wages since filing your original claim 2. If your reason for separation from your most recent employer qualifies 3. If you're still able and available to work The adjudication process for recertification follows the same timeline as a new claim - ideally 3 weeks, but often longer during busy periods. The status messages changing is actually normal (though confusing). "Waiting for information" often means they're contacting employers, while "adjudication" means they're reviewing the facts of your case. Keep filing weekly claims during this time, and if it goes beyond 4 weeks, I would recommend contacting ESD directly for a status update.

Thanks for breaking it down! So is it a problem that my original denial from November 2023 (different employer) is still in my claims history? Or will they just focus on my most recent approved claim and the new job loss from September?

They'll primarily focus on your most recent approved claim and your separation from your most recent employer. However, they will review your entire claim history as part of the process. Your previous denial from 2023 generally won't affect your current recertification unless there are unresolved issues from that period (like an overpayment). The fact that you were approved after your September 2024 job loss indicates that your separation reason was acceptable. Unless something has changed in your circumstances since then, the recertification should eventually be approved. I understand it's stressful waiting without clear information. If you do contact ESD, ask specifically about the status of your recertification adjudication and whether there's any information they need from you to complete the process.

That's really helpful info. I'm going to try calling them tomorrow morning right when they open. If I can't get through, I might try that Claimyr service someone mentioned.

BTW has anyone else noticed that the ESD website is CONSTANTLY under maintenance whenever you actaully need to use it?? I swear they do it on purpose to stop people from checking their claims lol

Quick update question for the original poster - has there been any movement on your claim status? Sometimes these recertifications suddenly process after sitting for weeks. Keep us posted if you get through to ESD or if your status changes.

Just checked this morning and the status is still showing adjudication with no other details. Day 23 of waiting... I'm going to try calling today and will update if anything changes!
