ESD appeal hearing status changed to 'adjudication in progress' - What does this mean?

I just had my ESD unemployment appeal hearing three days ago and noticed something strange. Right before the hearing, my decision status tab showed 'awaiting hearing results' (or something similar), but now it's changed to 'adjudication in progress.' Haven't received any updates since then. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? My employer didn't even show up to the hearing, which I thought would help my case. But now I'm worried this status change means they're finding issues with my eligibility. Has anyone experienced this status change after an appeal hearing? How long did it take to get your final decision? Starting to stress about bills piling up while I wait.

That status change is actually a normal part of the process after an appeal hearing. The OAH (Office of Administrative Hearings) sends their recommendation to ESD, and ESD has to review it before implementing the decision. This review process shows as 'adjudication in progress' in the system. The fact your employer didn't attend is generally positive - the judge can only consider evidence that was presented at the hearing. Usually takes 1-3 weeks to get the official written decision by mail, and then another week or so for ESD to implement it in their system.

Thank you so much! That makes me feel better. Do you know if I should expect anything in eServices before I get the mailed decision? And should I keep filing my weekly claims during this time?

had same thing happen to me!! my status changed like 4 different times after the hearing lol. first it was 'hearing scheduled' then 'awaiting results' then 'adjudication' then finally 'paid' after like 10 days

The system isn't exactly transparent with these status changes. Different departments handle different parts of the process, which is why you see these shifts. Appeal decisions go from OAH → ESD adjudication → payment processing → payment systems. Each handoff creates a status change.

THEY ARE GOING TO DENY YOU AGAIN!!!! ESD ALWAYS puts claims back in adjudication when they're looking for a reason to deny benefits! My appeal was approved by the judge but then ESD overruled it and put me back in adjudication for ANOTHER 6 WEEKS!!!! The whole system is designed to wear you down until you give up!!!

That's not accurate. ESD cannot overrule an Administrative Law Judge's decision. If the judge rules in your favor, ESD must implement that decision. The 'adjudication in progress' status just means they're processing the judge's decision. If you experienced additional delays, it was likely due to a separate issue identified during implementation, not ESD overruling the judge.

I recently went through an appeal and had success getting through to an ESD representative using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They connected me directly to an ESD agent who explained exactly what my status changes meant and gave me a timeline for when to expect my decision. Saved me so much anxiety! You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent told me the 'adjudication in progress' status after a hearing is just their way of processing the judge's decision. It doesn't indicate whether the decision is favorable or not.

is this service legit? seems sketchy that they can get through when nobody else can

It's completely legitimate. They basically use a system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold for you. When they reach an agent, they call you and connect you. I was skeptical too but it worked when I'd spent days getting busy signals.

My brother-in-law is going through the exact same thing right now but he also got a letter in the mail about some totally unrelated overpayment issue from 2023 that has nothing to do with his current claim and now he's freaking out thinking they're going to use that against him even though his hearing was about being fired without cause and I told him the two things are completely separate but he's convinced everything is connected somehow and the system is out to get him which I guess I understand because the whole process is so confusing

Oh wow, that sounds stressful! I hope they don't find some unrelated issue with my claim. Did your brother-in-law eventually get his appeal approved?

To give you a clear timeline: After an appeal hearing, the Administrative Law Judge has 30 days to issue a written decision, though they typically complete it within 7-14 days. Once issued, ESD typically takes 3-7 business days to implement the decision in their system. During implementation, your status will show as "adjudication in progress." Important: continue filing your weekly claims during this entire process! If you win your appeal but haven't been filing weekly claims, you won't receive benefits for those weeks. Also, check your correspondence inbox in eServices daily - sometimes they'll upload the decision there before you receive the physical mail.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses. I'll keep filing my weekly claims and try to be patient. It's just so stressful waiting and wondering. Does anyone know if I'll get back pay for all the weeks I've been filing while waiting for this appeal to resolve? I'm going on month 3 now with no income.

Yes, if your appeal is successful, you'll receive back pay for all eligible weeks you've claimed during the appeal process. Make sure you've been meeting the job search requirements (3 activities per week) and documenting them properly, as those weeks will be subject to the same eligibility requirements if you win your appeal.
