ESD appeal status changed from 'appeal in process' to 'determined' - what does this mean?
I've been fighting with ESD over a disqualification for the past 2 months. I filed an appeal after they denied my benefits claiming I quit voluntarily (I was actually laid off due to budget cuts). My appeal status was showing 'appeal in process' for about 5 weeks, but when I checked eServices this morning it suddenly changed to 'determined'. There's no explanation or new documents in my account. Anyone know what this status change means? Will I get a letter in the mail? Does 'determined' mean they made a decision? If so, shouldn't it tell me if I won or lost the appeal? Getting really stressed about this since I've got rent due next week and I'm counting on that backpay ($5,280).

Yes, 'determined' means they've made a decision on your appeal. You should receive an official determination letter in the mail within 3-5 business days. The letter will explain the decision and your next steps. The online status usually updates before the letter arrives. If the decision is in your favor, you'll start seeing payments process within about 48 hours of the status change.

•Thanks! Have you gone through this yourself? I'm nervous about what the decision might be. Do you know if there's any way to find out the actual decision before the letter arrives?

•Did you win your appeal? I've been trying to call them all morning with no luck. The automated system just keeps hanging up on me.

Just went through this exact thing last month! 'Determined' means they made a decision but doesn't tell you what it is (super annoying). I had to wait 6 days for the letter to show up. Fingers crossed for you!

•The same thing happened to me but my letter never showed up! I had to call ESD four times before I could talk to someone who told me I won my appeal. What a nightmare the whole process is.

If you need to know the decision urgently before the letter arrives, you can try calling the ESD appeals office directly at 360-570-5700. They might be able to tell you the result over the phone if the decision has been finalized. Just be prepared with your claim ID and personal information to verify your identity. In my experience, 'determined' means they've made the decision, but it takes a day or two for it to fully process in their system before it shows whether you were approved or denied. The letters are indeed slow, so calling is your best bet if you need to know immediately.

•I tried calling that number multiple times today but couldn't get through to a real person. It's so frustrating!

THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO FRUSTRATE YOU!!! They make these statuses vague on purpose so you give up. I had the exact same 'determined' status change without any info for TWO WEEKS before getting a letter. Even after winning my appeal they made me wait another 3 weeks for payment. The whole thing is criminal.

•That's not entirely accurate. While the system is frustrating, the 'determined' status is simply showing that the legal decision has been made. The delay is because all appeal decisions must be sent via postal mail per state regulations, not because they're trying to make things difficult. The payment delays after a favorable decision are often due to separate processing requirements. Still frustrating, but there are legal reasons for the process.

I had the same thing happen and a letter came 4 days later saying I won! Hopefully yours will be good news too. My boyfriend's said determined for almost a week before his letter came though so don't panic if it takes a few days.

If you're having trouble reaching ESD by phone (and most people are), I'd recommend trying Claimyr.com. I used their service when I was stuck in a similar situation with my appeal. They connect you directly to an ESD agent without the usual hold times. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 I was skeptical at first, but it saved me from having to redial for days. The agent I spoke with was able to tell me my appeal decision right away, which gave me peace of mind while waiting for the official letter.

•does that actually work? ive been calling for two weeks and never getting thru

•Yes, it does work. The service basically navigates the phone system for you and waits in the queue, then calls you when they've reached an agent. Saved me hours of frustration.

UPDATE: I finally managed to get through to ESD today! Turns out I won my appeal! The representative said the determination letter was sent out yesterday and should arrive by the end of the week. They're going to process my backpay within 48-72 hours. Such a relief!

•That's great news! Congratulations on winning your appeal. Make sure to keep filing your weekly claims while waiting for the payment to process. Sometimes they require additional action from you even after a successful appeal.

This whole thing reminds me of when my uncle had an UI appeal last year. His status changed to 'determined' but then nothing happened for like 3 weeks. Turns out they sent his determination letter to his old address even though he'd updated his info online. He had to go physically to the WorkSource office to get a copy of the letter. Maybe check if your address is correct in the system?

•Thanks for the suggestion, but fortunately I got through to ESD today and confirmed my address is correct in their system. They said I should get the letter this week. Just glad I won the appeal!
