Documents sent to employer a week ago - no ESD response yet. Should I be worried?

Hi everyone, I'm getting a bit anxious about my unemployment claim. ESD notified my previous employer (retail store that closed down) to submit final verification documents almost a week ago, but I haven't heard anything since. The status on my eServices account still shows as 'pending employer response.' Is this normal waiting time or a bad sign? I'm getting worried they might have found something wrong with my claim. I worked there for 3 years and was laid off when the store closed in March. Has anyone been through a similar situation recently? How long did you wait before hearing back after employer documents were requested?

This is pretty normal. When I filed in January, it took my employer almost 2 weeks to submit everything, and then another week before ESD updated my claim status. As long as you were laid off due to no fault of your own, you should be fine. Just keep filing your weekly claims in the meantime!

Thanks for the reassurance! So even though it still says 'pending employer response,' they might have actually received it but haven't updated the system? I'll keep doing my weekly claims, just getting nervous with bills coming due.

A week isn't unusual at all. ESD gives employers 10 business days to respond to verification requests. After that, ESD will review whatever information they have and make a determination. Keep in mind that even after your employer responds, it can take additional time for an ESD specialist to review everything and update your claim status. The important thing is to keep filing your weekly claims on time while you wait.

That's really helpful to know about the 10 business days policy. I think I was expecting everything to happen instantly in the computer system. I'll try to be more patient!

The ESD system is COMPLETELY BROKEN!! I waited TWO MONTHS for them to process my employer's response!!! And then they had the NERVE to ask for MORE documentation. This is how they gatekeep benefits - making you wait so long you give up. The employers ALWAYS get more time than they should. It's a rigged system!!!

While I understand your frustration, I want to clarify that the standard employer response window is 10 business days, but backlogs can cause additional delays in processing. If your claim took two months, there were likely other factors involved such as adjudication or identity verification issues. It's not usually because employers are given extra time.

Oh that's a good point! I'll try to check if they have the right contact. The store closed down but the parent company is still operating. I think they should have the HR contact info but maybe something got mixed up.

My sister-in-law just went through this last month. It's nerve-wracking for sure! Her employer took the full 10 days to respond, then it was in some kind of queue for processing. She got approved though so hang in there!

If you're concerned about your claim status or need to check whether your employer has responded, I recommend trying to speak directly with an ESD agent. Since it can be difficult to get through on the phone lines, I've found Claimyr to be incredibly helpful. It's a service that helps you connect with an ESD agent without spending hours redialing. I used it when my claim was stuck in a similar situation. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. The peace of mind from talking to an actual agent was worth it for me.

Thank you for the suggestion! I've been trying to call ESD for two days with no luck. I'll check out that service - at this point I just need to talk to someone who can tell me what's going on with my claim.

Just wanted to add - make sure you're fulfilling your job search requirements while you wait (that's 3 activities per week now). I made the mistake of not doing this while waiting for my initial claim to process and almost got disqualified even though my claim was eventually approved.

Yes, I've been doing my job search activities! I keep detailed records in the ESD job search log. Applying to at least 4-5 places each week just to be safe. Thanks for the reminder though - that would be a terrible mistake to make.

One more thing - if your claim does go into adjudication (which can happen even for routine verification), don't panic. That's just their process for resolving questions about eligibility. If that happens, you'll receive a notice explaining what information they need. Just respond promptly and continue filing weekly claims during adjudication.

Update: I was able to get through to ESD this morning after a long wait. They confirmed my employer did submit the documents two days ago, but my claim is now in adjudication because I had a small part-time job (10 hours/week) while at the retail store. They said this is routine and I should receive a determination within 2-3 weeks. Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance!

Great news that you got through! Adjudication for multiple employers is very standard, especially when one job continues while another ends. Just make sure you're reporting any ongoing part-time income in your weekly claims. Glad you got some clarity on your situation!
