Do temp agencies pay unemployment benefits in Washington - confused about eligibility
I've been working through a temp agency for the past 8 months on various assignments. My current assignment just ended and I'm not sure if I can file for unemployment benefits. The temp agency says they pay into the unemployment system but I'm getting mixed information online. Does anyone know if temp workers in Washington can collect unemployment? I've never filed before and don't want to mess this up.

Yes, temp agencies absolutely pay into Washington ESD unemployment insurance. As long as you earned enough wages and worked enough hours, you should be eligible. The key is that you were an employee of the temp agency, not an independent contractor.

•That's a relief! I was worried because I worked for different companies through the agency. Do I list the temp agency as my employer when filing?

Mia Rodriguez
•Exactly - you list the temp agency as your employer since they're the ones who actually employed you and paid your wages.

been there, temp work definitely counts for UI benefits. just make sure you have all your pay stubs from the agency

•Good point about the pay stubs. I have most of them but might be missing a few from earlier assignments.

•Washington ESD can get wage information directly from employers, so don't stress too much about missing a few pay stubs. They'll verify your earnings.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this same question last week and couldn't get through to anyone. Spent 2 hours on hold before getting disconnected. Their phone system is impossible.

•I had the same problem trying to reach them about my temp work eligibility. Someone told me about claimyr.com - it's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Does it actually work for getting through their phone system?

•Yeah it worked for me when I had questions about my temp agency wages. Saved me hours of calling and getting nowhere.

The temp agency thing confused me too when I first filed. But Washington ESD recognizes temp work as regular employment for unemployment purposes.

•Did you have any issues during the claims process because of the temp work?

•Nope, went smoothly once I provided the temp agency's information. Just be honest about your work history.

wait so if my temp assignment ends but the agency says they might have more work next week, can I still file?

Mia Rodriguez
•Yes, if you're not currently working and the agency doesn't have immediate work available, you can file. You just need to be available for work and actively seeking employment.

•ok cool, wasn't sure about that part

For temp agency workers, the base period wages are calculated the same way as any other job. Washington ESD looks at your earnings from the temp agency over the base period to determine your benefit amount.

Mason Davis
•What's the base period exactly? I keep seeing that term but don't understand it.

Amelia Martinez
•The base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. So if you file in January 2025, your base period would be January 2024 through December 2024.

I worked temp jobs for years and collected unemployment between assignments multiple times. Never had any problems with Washington ESD.

•That's encouraging to hear. Did you ever have gaps between when assignments ended and when you filed?

•Sometimes yeah, but as long as you file within a reasonable time after becoming unemployed you should be fine.

make sure the temp agency classified you as an employee and not a contractor though. if they gave you a 1099 instead of W2 you might have issues

Mason Davis
•Good point! I definitely got W2s from the temp agency, so I should be covered.
0 coins
Mia Rodriguez
•Exactly right - W2 employees are covered by unemployment insurance, 1099 contractors are not.

The whole temp agency system is confusing but Washington ESD treats it like any other job for unemployment purposes. Just file online like everyone else.

Don't overthink it - temp agencies pay unemployment taxes just like any other employer. You earned those benefits.

•You're right, I was probably worrying over nothing. Just wanted to make sure before filing.

I had a friend who worked temp and got unemployment no problem. The key thing is having enough qualifying wages in your base period.

Mason Davis
•I think I should have enough wages since I worked pretty consistently for 8 months.

Amelia Martinez
•8 months of consistent temp work should definitely meet the wage requirements for Washington unemployment benefits.

•I know someone who used claimyr.com to get through to Washington ESD when they couldn't reach them normally. Might be worth trying if you need to talk to someone.

temp agencies definitely pay into unemployment. worked for three different agencies over the years and collected benefits between assignments

•Did you ever work for multiple temp agencies at the same time? Wondering how that affects things.

Aaron Lee
•yeah a couple times. just report all your wages from all agencies when you file

The eligibility rules are the same whether you work temp or permanent. As long as you meet the wage and work requirements, you can collect.

•That makes sense. I was probably overthinking the temp aspect of it.

Been working temp on and off for years, never had any issues with unemployment claims. The temp agency is your employer as far as Washington ESD is concerned.

Just wanted to add that when you file, make sure to report any severance pay or final paychecks you received from the temp agency. Washington ESD needs to know about all compensation to properly calculate your benefits timing. Also, keep records of when each assignment ended in case they ask for details later.
