Do I need a termination letter for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
Got laid off from my warehouse job last Friday and planning to file for unemployment benefits this week. My supervisor just handed me my final paycheck and said I was done, but didn't give me any paperwork or termination letter. Do I need some kind of official termination document to apply for Washington ESD benefits? I'm worried they won't approve my claim without proper documentation. Has anyone filed successfully without a formal termination letter?

You don't technically need a termination letter to file your initial claim with Washington ESD. The system will ask for your employer's information and reason for separation, but you can explain the circumstances in your own words. However, having documentation definitely helps if there are any questions during adjudication.

•That's a relief! Should I try to get something in writing from my employer anyway, or just file with what I have?

•It wouldn't hurt to ask for a separation notice or even just an email confirming your last day and reason for termination. Saves headaches later if Washington ESD needs to verify anything.

same thing happened to me - boss just said 'we're letting you go' and that was it. filed anyway and got approved without any issues

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved? I'm hoping it goes through quickly since I have bills to pay.

•took about 2 weeks but that was because they had to verify my employment history with a previous job too

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and it's impossible! The phone lines are always busy. Found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent in under 30 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and their website is claimyr.com. Might be worth checking out if you run into issues.

•Never heard of that but I'll keep it in mind if I can't get through. Thanks for the tip!

•How much does that service cost? Seems like something that should be free.

•It's worth it when you're desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD. Saved me tons of time and frustration trying to call on my own.

The key thing is being able to provide accurate information about your separation. Washington ESD will contact your employer to verify the details anyway, so as long as you're truthful about being laid off versus quit versus fired, you should be fine. Document everything you can remember about your last day.

•Good point about being accurate. It was definitely a layoff due to slow business, not performance issues or anything like that.

•EXACTLY! I got denied initially because I said I was 'let go' but my employer told Washington ESD I was fired for attendance. Had to appeal and provide proof it was actually downsizing.

•That's a perfect example of why clear communication about the separation reason is crucial. 'Let go' can mean different things to different people.

Washington ESD's system is set up to handle claims without formal termination letters. They understand that not all employers provide written documentation. What matters most is that you can provide your employer's contact information and explain the circumstances clearly when filing.

•That's reassuring. I was worried I'd be automatically denied without official paperwork.

•Nope! The Washington ESD application process is designed to accommodate various separation scenarios. Just be thorough and honest in your responses.

My company always gives termination letters but I know plenty of places that don't. You'll be fine filing without one - just make sure you remember your manager's full name and the company's phone number for the application.

•Got all that info from my last paystub, so I should be good to go.

Been there - lost my retail job without any paperwork and was panicking about filing. Called Washington ESD and they said written documentation helps but isn't required. Filed online and got approved without any problems. The adjudication process went fine even without a termination letter.

•That's exactly what I needed to hear! How long did your whole process take from filing to first payment?

•About 3 weeks total, but that included the waiting week. Once I started getting payments it was pretty smooth.

•Three weeks isn't bad at all considering how backed up they usually are.

If you're worried about documentation, you could ask your former employer for a simple email confirming your employment dates and that you were laid off. Most employers will provide this basic info even if they don't do formal termination letters.

•That's a good compromise. I might shoot my supervisor a text asking for something like that.

•Email is better than text for documentation purposes - easier to print or save if you need it later.

The Washington ESD will figure it out during their investigation phase. They contact employers directly to verify separation details. I wouldn't stress too much about not having a formal letter - focus on filing your claim as soon as possible to avoid delays.

•You're right, I should just file and let them sort it out. Thanks for the perspective!

Had to use Claimyr again last week when my weekly claim got flagged for some reason. Their service really works - got me through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach anyone after hours of trying. Worth checking out if you need to talk to someone about your claim.
