When you get laid off can you collect unemployment in Washington?
Just got laid off from my warehouse job yesterday after 2 years and I'm trying to figure out if I can file for unemployment benefits. My supervisor said it was due to 'company restructuring' and that my position was eliminated. I've never been fired or had any disciplinary issues. Can I collect unemployment through Washington ESD if I was laid off? What do I need to do to apply?

Yes, being laid off typically qualifies you for unemployment benefits in Washington. Since you were terminated due to company restructuring and not for misconduct, you should be eligible. You'll need to file your claim online at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible - there's usually a one-week waiting period before benefits start.

•Thank you! Should I file right away or wait to see if they might call me back?

•File immediately. Even if they call you back, you can always stop your claim. The sooner you file, the sooner your benefit year starts.

Layoffs due to restructuring definitely qualify for UI benefits. You'll need your social security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months when you apply. Make sure you have your last employer's contact information too.

•Do I need any paperwork from my employer or just their contact info?

•Just their contact info is fine for the initial application. Washington ESD will contact them directly to verify your separation reason.

I was in a similar situation last year when my company downsized. The hardest part was actually getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my claim. Their phone lines are constantly busy and I'd get disconnected after waiting for hours. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to help me get through to an actual agent - they have this system that calls for you and gets you connected. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•That sounds really helpful. Did you have to pay for that service?

Yuki Kobayashi
•Yeah there's a fee but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of spending days trying to get through on my own.

•I've heard good things about Claimyr too. My neighbor used it when his claim got stuck in adjudication.

wait so if I get laid off I automatically get unemployment? what if the company says I was fired instead of laid off?

•The company can claim whatever they want, but Washington ESD makes the final determination based on the facts. If you were truly laid off due to restructuring, that should be documented.

•ok good to know. I'm worried my boss might try to screw me over

One important thing - make sure you understand the job search requirements. You'll need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep records of your activities. This starts immediately when you begin claiming benefits.

•What counts as a job search contact? Does applying online count?

Ethan Clark
•Yes, online applications count. You can also attend job fairs, contact employers directly, or use WorkSourceWA services. Just make sure to document everything.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting 6 weeks for my adjudication to clear and they won't tell me anything. Good luck getting any help from Washington ESD - they don't care about working people!

•Oh no, what happened with your claim? Should I be worried about adjudication issues?

AstroAce
•Most straightforward layoff cases don't go into adjudication. If your separation reason is clear and there are no disputes, it should process normally.

I got laid off from Boeing last month and my claim was approved within a week. The key is being honest and accurate on your application. Don't try to embellish anything - just stick to the facts about why you were separated.

•That's reassuring! Did you have any issues with the weekly claims process?
0 coins
Carmen Vega
•Not really. Just make sure to file your weekly claim every Sunday and report any work you do accurately. It's pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it.

Just to clarify the eligibility requirements - you need to have earned at least $1,680 in your base year and your total base year wages must be at least 1.5 times your highest quarter earnings. Based on your 2 years of employment, you should easily meet these requirements.

Aisha Mahmood
•What's a base year? I'm confused about all these terms.
0 coins
AstroAce
•Your base year is typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. So if you file now, it would include quarters from last year through early this year.

Another thing about calling Washington ESD - if you do need to reach them, avoid calling on Mondays and Tuesdays. Those are the busiest days. I learned this the hard way before I found Claimyr. Wednesday through Friday mornings tend to be a bit better.

•What time do they open? I tried calling at 8am once and couldn't get through.

Yuki Kobayashi
•They open at 8am but the lines are jammed immediately. That's why services like Claimyr are so helpful - they handle the calling nightmare for you.

this is all so confusing. why can't they just make it simple? I just want to know if I'll get money if I lose my job

Ethan Clark
•I know it seems overwhelming, but the basic answer is yes - if you're laid off through no fault of your own, you should qualify for benefits. The details matter for the application process, but don't stress too much about understanding everything upfront.

•ok thanks that makes me feel better

My advice is to screenshot everything when you apply and keep records of all your communications. The system can be glitchy and you want to have proof of what you submitted and when.

•Good tip! Should I print out the confirmation page when I file?
0 coins
Mei Wong
•Absolutely. Print or save PDFs of everything. Also write down any confirmation numbers they give you.

Wait, I thought there was a waiting week where you don't get paid? Is that still a thing?
0 coins
AstroAce
•Yes, Washington still has a one-week waiting period. You'll file for that week but won't receive payment for it unless you have a qualifying separation like being laid off due to COVID-related reasons.

Liam Sullivan
•So I'd file for week 1 but not get paid until week 2? That's rough when you need money immediately.

One more thing - make sure your employer doesn't try to contest your claim. Sometimes companies will dispute unemployment claims to keep their tax rates low. If that happens, you might need to provide additional documentation about your layoff.
0 coins
Aisha Mahmood
•How would I know if they contest it? Would Washington ESD tell me?
0 coins
Carmen Vega
•Yes, you'd get a notice if there's a dispute. That's when your claim might go into adjudication while they investigate.

I got laid off 3 months ago and my claim was approved no problem. The weekly benefit amount is based on your earnings, so make sure you report your wages accurately when you apply. I was making about $55k and get around $600 per week.

Aisha Mahmood
•That's helpful to know! I was making about $45k so I'm wondering what my weekly amount would be.

•You can use the benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website to get an estimate before you file.

Pro tip: register with WorkSourceWA when you file your claim. It's not required immediately but you'll need to do it eventually, and it shows you're serious about finding work if there are any questions about your claim.

Aisha Mahmood
•Is WorkSourceWA the same as the job search requirement you mentioned earlier?
0 coins
Giovanni Colombo
•It's related but not exactly the same. WorkSourceWA is the state job service - you'll register there and can use their resources for your job search activities.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing - I used them twice last year when I had questions about my claim status and when I needed help with an issue about my job search log. Both times they got me connected to an actual person at Washington ESD within a few hours instead of me spending days trying to call. Definitely worth considering if you run into any problems.

StarStrider
•How does that even work? Do they just call for you?
0 coins
Yuki Kobayashi
•Yeah, you give them your info and they handle the calling process. When they get an agent on the line, they conference you in. The video demo I mentioned earlier explains it better than I can.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful information! I feel much more confident about filing now. I'm going to apply online tomorrow and make sure I have all my employment information ready. Hopefully it goes smoothly but it's good to know there are options like Claimyr if I need help reaching someone at Washington ESD.
