Disqualified for a week with no determination letter from ESD - what happened?
So I just checked my ESD account and saw I was disqualified for the week ending January 31st, but there's absolutely no explanation why! I don't understand what happened. I definitely marked that I was available for work, entered all 3 of my job search activities like normal, and didn't work any hours that week. My claim summary shows nothing pending, and I haven't received any determination letters in my ESD inbox or by mail. Has this happened to anyone else? How am I supposed to know what went wrong if they don't tell me? I really need that payment to cover my rent next month.

•Did you ever find out why? Did your payments go back to normal the next week?

There are a few common reasons this can happen without a determination letter: 1. If you answered "no" to being able and available for work (even accidentally) 2. If your job search activities didn't meet requirements (they have to be different types) 3. If you reported earnings that exceeded your weekly benefit amount 4. Sometimes there's a system glitch where your job search activities don't save properly I'd recommend checking your weekly claim confirmation page again to see exactly what you submitted. The answers are stored in the system even if you don't have the confirmation email.

•Thanks for the suggestions! I'm positive I answered "yes" to being available, and I didn't report any earnings. For job searches, I did 2 applications and 1 networking contact... maybe that's it? But I thought that was allowed.

I had this exact issue in November. When I finally got through to an ESD agent, it turned out there was a flag on my claim because one of my job search activities had incomplete information. The system disqualified me automatically but somehow the letter never generated. Once the agent reviewed it with me, they were able to fix it and release the payment. The hard part is actually reaching someone at ESD. I spent three days calling and couldn't get through because of the "high call volume" message.

•That sounds exactly like what might be happening! I've already tried calling 6 times today and kept getting disconnected. Did you just keep trying until you got through?

LISTEN - ESD is NOTORIOUS for "silent disqualifications" where they don't bother telling you why!!! I worked for 20 years in construction before getting laid off and this happened to me FOUR TIMES during my claim. Each time I had to waste HOURS trying to reach someone. One time they said I didn't complete one of the job search fields correctly (seriously???), another time they claimed I answered a question wrong even though I KNOW I didn't. This system is DESIGNED to deny benefits hoping you'll just give up and not appeal. Don't let them get away with it!!

Have you checked if maybe you hit the wrong button on one of the eligibility questions? Sometimes I fill these out half asleep and realize later I made a mistake. One time I accidentally said I wasn't available for work when I definitely was! But you should still get a letter...

•I'm pretty sure I answered everything correctly, but I guess it's possible I made a mistake. What I don't understand is why they wouldn't at least tell me what the problem was!

This happened to me last year after I'd been claiming for about 6 months. For me it was because one of my job contacts couldn't be verified - I had applied through Indeed but the company had removed the posting by the time ESD tried to verify it. The stupid thing is I only found this out after spending THREE WEEKS trying to reach someone at ESD. I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me actually get through to an agent instead of getting the busy signal all day. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Was totally worth it since the agent was able to fix my disqualification on the spot once I explained what happened.

•Thank you, I'll check that out! At this point I just need to talk to a real person who can tell me what went wrong.

Another thing worth checking - log into your eServices account and look at your "Decisions" tab, not just your messages/inbox. Sometimes determination letters show up there but don't come through as regular messages. Also, make sure your contact information is up to date in case they mailed something to an old address.

•Just checked the Decisions tab and there's nothing there either! So frustrating. My address is definitely correct too.

my cousin works at worksource and she says this happens alot. she said sometimes its just a random audit thing where they flag one week to check your job search contacts more carefully. did u put the full phone number and contact info for all your job searches?

•For two of them I had complete info, but for one networking contact I only had an email, not a phone number. I didn't realize you needed both!

•That's probably it! Job search contacts need complete information including name, company, date, method of contact, position, AND either phone number or email. If you're missing any of these fields, the system can automatically disqualify that activity, and if you don't have enough valid activities left, it disqualifies the whole week.

Update us when you find out what happened. I'm curious if it was the job search contact information issue. Once you talk to someone at ESD, they should be able to fix it right away if that's all it was.

•I finally got through to ESD this morning! You were right - it was because one of my job search activities didn't have complete contact information. The agent was able to update it and remove the disqualification. She said the payment should process in 48 hours. Thanks everyone for your help!

•Great news! For future reference, always make sure to include ALL required information for each job search activity. The system is very picky about this.
