Confused about unemployment tax requirements - do I need to pay taxes on Washington ESD benefits?
I've been receiving unemployment benefits from Washington ESD for about 8 weeks now and just realized I might need to pay taxes on this money. My friend told me unemployment is taxable income but I'm not sure if that's true or how it works. I haven't been setting aside any money for taxes because I thought unemployment was like welfare or something. Should I be worried about owing money to the IRS? How does unemployment tax work exactly?

Yes, unemployment benefits are considered taxable income by the federal government. You should receive a 1099-G form from Washington ESD at the end of the year showing how much you received. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them when you file your tax return.

•Oh no, I didn't know this! How do I set up tax withholding on my weekly claims?

•You can request withholding when you file your weekly claim on the Washington ESD website. Look for the tax withholding option - it's usually 10% federal.

this is why i always tell people to save at least 20% of their unemployment payments for taxes!! learned this the hard way a few years ago

•20%? That seems like a lot. Is it really that much?

•depends on your tax bracket but better safe than sorry. i owed like $800 one year because i didn't save anything

I had the same confusion when I first started getting benefits. The good news is you can request federal tax withholding right from your weekly claim. Washington state doesn't have state income tax so you only need to worry about federal. I'd recommend calling Washington ESD to set this up if you can't figure out the online option.

•I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about different issues but can never get through. Their phone lines are always busy.

•Have you tried that Claimyr service? I used it last month when I couldn't reach anyone at Washington ESD. They basically call for you and connect you to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate to talk to someone. Does it actually work?

Carmen Ruiz
•Yeah it worked for me. Took about 20 minutes and I was talking to an actual Washington ESD rep. Worth trying if you're stuck.

Wait, so unemployment is taxable but when I was working my employer was already paying unemployment taxes on my behalf? That doesn't make sense to me. Why am I paying taxes twice?

Ethan Clark
•Those are two different things. Your employer pays unemployment insurance taxes to fund the system. You pay income tax on the benefits you receive, just like you would on wages.

•Ok that makes more sense I guess. Still seems unfair though.

The whole unemployment system is a mess. They make it so confusing on purpose so people don't know their rights or what they owe.

•I don't think it's intentionally confusing, just that tax law is complicated in general.

•Maybe but they could do a better job explaining this stuff upfront instead of people finding out later

So just to confirm - I need to either have taxes withheld from my weekly payments OR save money to pay taxes when I file my return next year? And Washington ESD will send me a form showing how much I received?

•Exactly right. The 1099-G will show your total benefits for the year. If you don't withhold, make sure to save at least 10-15% depending on your tax situation.

•Thanks, this is really helpful. I'm going to try to set up withholding on my next weekly claim.

quick question - does anyone know if the tax withholding affects how much you get each week? like if i choose 10% withholding do i get 10% less money?
0 coins
Ethan Clark
•Yes, if you choose 10% federal withholding, they'll take 10% out of each payment and send it to the IRS on your behalf.

•ok cool just wanted to make sure i understood that right

This reminds me of when I was on unemployment a few years ago and didn't realize about the taxes. Ended up owing like $1200 when I filed my return. Definitely set up the withholding if you can afford to have less money each week.

•Yikes, $1200 is a lot! I definitely can't afford a surprise bill like that.

•Yeah it was rough. Had to set up a payment plan with the IRS. Learn from my mistake!

also remember that if you do any side work or gig work while on unemployment you need to report that income AND it's also taxable

•Good point. I've been thinking about doing some freelance work but wasn't sure how that would affect my claim.

•You have to report any work income when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD will reduce your benefits based on how much you earned.

The tax withholding option should be right there when you log into your Washington ESD account to file your weekly claim. It's pretty straightforward once you find it.

•Perfect, I'll look for that when I file this week. Thanks everyone for all the help!

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier - if anyone else is having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, it's really worth trying. I was skeptical at first but it saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems too good to be true.

•It's not free but way cheaper than missing work to spend all day calling. The time savings alone made it worth it for me.

One more thing to keep in mind - if you're getting a large tax refund normally, having the unemployment taxes withheld might actually help balance that out. Depends on your specific situation though.

Aisha Hussain
•That's a good point. I usually get a small refund so this might actually work out ok.

does washington state tax unemployment benefits at all or just federal?
0 coins
Ethan Clark
•Washington state has no income tax, so you only need to worry about federal taxes on your unemployment benefits.

•oh right duh, forgot we don't have state income tax here. thanks!

This whole thread has been super helpful. I've been putting off dealing with the tax issue but now I know what I need to do. Going to set up withholding this week.

For anyone who's already been getting benefits without withholding, you might want to make quarterly estimated tax payments to avoid owing a big lump sum. The IRS website has calculators for this.

Aisha Hussain
•I'll look into that. I've been getting benefits for 8 weeks already without withholding.

Ethan Clark
•Good advice. If you expect to owe more than $1000 when you file, quarterly payments can help avoid penalties.

honestly the whole tax system is confusing but at least unemployment benefits are straightforward - they're just regular income as far as taxes go

Aisha Hussain
•Yeah that does make it simpler to understand once you know that basic fact.

Make sure to keep good records of all your unemployment payments too. The 1099-G should match what you received but it's good to have your own records just in case.

I tried that claimyr thing someone mentioned and it actually worked great. Got through to washington esd in like 15 minutes when i'd been trying for days on my own

One last thing - if you're married, the unemployment income will affect your joint tax return too. Make sure to factor that in when deciding about withholding.
