Changing SSN on ESD account after profile creation - urgent help needed

I just realized I made a huge mistake when setting up my ESD unemployment profile last week. I typed my social security number wrong (switched two numbers). Now I'm super worried this will cause problems with my claim. Has anyone had to change their SSN after creating a profile? Is there a way to edit it myself somewhere in the settings, or do I need to call ESD directly? I've been trying to reach them for two days but can't get through. My first weekly claim is due in 3 days and I'm panicking that everything will get messed up if I don't fix this ASAP!

You can't change your SSN through the online portal - this is considered a critical identifier and requires direct assistance. You need to call the ESD claims center at 800-318-6022 and explain the situation. They'll likely have to verify your identity and manually update the record in their system. Do this ASAP before your claim gets processed further as mismatched SSNs will definitely cause problems with verification against IRS records and could delay your benefits for weeks.

Thank you for the info! I was afraid of that. I've been calling that number repeatedly but can't get through - just busy signals or it disconnects after the automated menu. Is there an alternative way to reach them? Email maybe? I'm really worried about delaying my benefits.

i did this exact same thing last year omg!! had my ssn backwards in two spots. total nightmare, my claim got stuck in processing for like 3 weeks. definitely call them asap dont wait for them to flag it bc then it goes to adjudication and thats even longer

Oh no, 3 weeks?? I can't wait that long! Did you eventually get it fixed by calling? How long did it take once you reached someone?

ya i got it fixed eventually but only after i FINALLY got someone on the phone. took like a million tries calling right when they opened. once i got through the lady fixed it in like 5 min, super easy on their end

I've had good luck with Claimyr when I needed to reach ESD and couldn't get through the normal way. Their service basically holds your place in line so you don't have to keep redialing. It worked really well for me - got through to an agent in about 20 minutes after trying for days on my own. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 and the website is claimyr.com. Worth checking out for something this important that needs immediate attention.

Is this legit? Seems sketchy to pay for something the government should be providing for free.

It's definitely legit - I was skeptical too but it's just a call service that navigates the ESD phone system for you. You still talk directly to real ESD agents. For me it was worth it because I'd already wasted hours trying to get through and my situation was time-sensitive like the OP's.

OK LISTEN UP because ESD makes this unnecessarily complicated!! You CAN'T change your SSN online BUT what you should do RIGHT NOW before calling is submit an online message through your eServices account documenting the error. Go to your dashboard > click on the envelope icon > create new message > select Account Problem > CLEARLY state your correct SSN and that you made an error. This creates a timestamp in their system showing you tried to correct it early. THEN call them but KEEP THE DOCUMENTATION that you tried to notify them early! I went through HELL with a similar issue last year and having proof I tried to fix it early was what saved me from losing benefits!!!

This is super helpful, thank you! I just submitted a message through eServices exactly as you suggested. I'll keep trying to call too, but at least now there's documentation in the system that I'm trying to fix it.

When i filed last year i think i put the wrong birthday lol. Not as bad as SSN but still took forever to fix. The systems are so old and terrible.

This actually happens pretty frequently. Since this involves your SSN, you'll need to provide identity verification documents when you speak with an agent. Have your ID, correct social security card, and birth certificate ready when you call. Also, continue filing your weekly claims even while this is being sorted out - just make sure to use the CORRECT SSN when filing the weeklies. The system will flag the mismatch, but that's actually good in this case as it creates another record of the issue. And make sure to document everything - note the date/time of all calls, names of agents you speak with, and any reference numbers they give you.

This is really helpful advice, thank you! I'll gather all those documents now so I'm ready when I finally get through. Should I still file my weekly claim this Sunday even if I haven't been able to reach anyone about fixing my SSN by then?

Yes, absolutely file your weekly claim on time, even if the SSN issue isn't resolved yet. Use your correct SSN on the weekly claim form. This creates a paper trail showing you're actively claiming and trying to do things correctly. The system might flag it, but that's better than missing a weekly certification which could jeopardize that week's benefits entirely.

why are these government systems so awful?? in what universe should it be THIS HARD to fix a simple typo? ridiculous that you have to jump through all these hoops for something so basic. and of course they make it impossible to reach anyone...

for real!! the whole system is designed to make ppl give up i swear

One more important thing - when you do reach an agent, ask them to place a note on your account about the SSN correction. Then request they email you confirmation that the change has been made. This creates another layer of documentation. Also, if you're planning to call tomorrow, try right at 8:00 AM when the phone lines open. That's typically when you have the best chance of getting through.

Thank you! I'll definitely request email confirmation. I've set my alarm for 7:55am tomorrow to try calling right when they open.
