ESD account shows wrong SSN when reapplying - system won't let me continue

I'm trying to file a new unemployment claim through the ESD website, but I keep hitting a roadblock. When I get to the personal profile section, the system gives me an error saying I need to use the same social security number I used in my previous application. The problem is, I'm 100% sure I'm entering MY correct SSN! I double-checked multiple times. Could my previous application have been filed with a typo? Has anyone else run into this weird SSN mismatch issue when reapplying? The error won't let me proceed at all and I'm getting desperate since my benefits from my last job ended two weeks ago.

Did you figure out how to fix it? I've been trying to get through to someone on the phone for 3 days with no luck.

This is most likely a data validation issue in their system. A few possibilities: 1) Your previous claim might have been filed with a typo in your SSN, 2) Someone else might have incorrectly used your SSN on their claim, or 3) There could be a hyphenation or formatting issue with how the SSN is stored in their database. Your best option is to contact ESD directly to have them verify and correct the information on your account. Unfortunately, their phone lines are notoriously difficult to get through.

Thanks for the explanation. Do you know if there's any way to fix this myself through the online portal? Or am I stuck trying to reach someone by phone?

Unfortunately, this specific issue requires assistance from an ESD agent who can access your account records. There's no self-service option in the portal to address SSN validation errors. You'll need to speak with someone directly.

I had a similar problem last year when reapplying. Turned out my ex-employer had somehow reported a different SSN for me (transposed two digits) and it created this exact error. Took forever to fix because nobody at ESD seemed to understand what was happening!!!

That's actually really helpful to know. My last employer was a small company with a pretty disorganized HR department, so I wouldn't be surprised if they made a mistake. How long did it take to resolve your issue?

It took almost 3 weeks because I couldn't get through on the phone. I kept calling that stupid number over and over until I finally gave up and physically went to a WorkSource office. Even then they couldn't fix it on the spot - had to escalate to someone else who called me back a few days later.

I've been helping several people with this exact issue lately. It's happening more frequently in 2025 for some reason. The problem is that you need to speak with an ESD agent who has access to both your current and previous claim information to do a manual override. Have you tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com)? I was skeptical at first, but it actually got me through to an ESD agent in under 30 minutes when I was dealing with an ID verification issue. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. It saved me days of redial frustration.

I've never heard of Claimyr before. I'll check out that video. At this point I'm willing to try anything because I really need to get this claim started. Thanks for the tip!

It's not a scam - it basically just handles the auto-redial process for you and puts you in the queue. Saved my sanity when dealing with my adjudication issue. Just make sure you have all your claim info ready because when they connect you, you don't want to waste time looking for documents.

This problem is definitely caused by an SSN mismatch in their system. When I worked at a WorkSource office (pre-COVID), we saw this all the time. The ESD database sometimes has conflicts when either: 1) Your previous claim had a data entry error, 2) Your employer reported a different SSN on wage records, or 3) There might be a fraud case involving your SSN that triggered a security flag. The only solution is to speak with an ESD agent who has database access privileges to view and correct SSN validation issues. They'll need to verify your identity with additional documentation (usually requesting a copy of your social security card and photo ID). If you manage to reach ESD, ask specifically for a "SSN validation review" so they route you to the correct department.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I'll specifically ask for an "SSN validation review" when I finally get through to someone. Do you know if I should have any specific documents ready when I call?

Yes, have your social security card, government-issued photo ID, and any previous ESD correspondence with your claim ID number ready. They might ask you to email or upload these documents during the call. Also have your previous employer's information available including company name, address, and ESD reference number if you have it.

I just went through this EXACT SAME THING last month!!! It was driving me absolutely INSANE. Called for two weeks straight without getting through. Finally I tried calling right when they opened at 7am on a Tuesday and got through after only 25 minutes on hold. The agent told me that my previous employer had reported my SSN with a typo (they switched two numbers) and that's why the system was giving me that error. They fixed it on their end and I was able to proceed with my application immediately. Keep trying to call at 7am sharp - that seemed to be the magic trick for me.

Thank you for sharing what worked! I'll try the 7am call tomorrow morning. Did they have to do anything special to fix it, or was it a quick update once you got someone on the phone?

Once I actually got through to someone, the fix was pretty quick - maybe 10 minutes. The agent had to verify my identity (asked for my address, last employer, etc) and then did some kind of override in their system. She stayed on the phone while I logged back in to make sure I could proceed with my application. The hardest part by FAR was just reaching a human being!

UPDATE: I finally got through to ESD this morning! For anyone facing this same issue in the future, here's what worked: I used the Claimyr service that someone recommended above, and it got me through to an agent in about 40 minutes. The problem was exactly what many of you suggested - my previous employer had transposed two digits in my SSN when reporting my wages. The agent verified my identity and fixed the mismatch in their system. I was able to continue my application right after the call. Thank you everyone for all your help and suggestions!
