Can you move to another state while on Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I'm currently receiving UI benefits from Washington ESD and my lease is up next month. My partner got a job offer in Oregon and we're thinking about moving there together. I still have about 8 weeks left on my claim and I'm worried about what happens if I move out of state. Do I need to notify Washington ESD? Will they cut off my benefits? I've been doing my job searches and weekly claims religiously but I'm not sure if moving affects anything. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

Yes, you can move to another state while collecting Washington ESD benefits, but you need to report the address change immediately in your eServices account. The key is that you must still be actively seeking work and available for work. You'll continue filing your weekly claims with Washington ESD even if you're living in Oregon.

•Thank you! Do I need to start looking for jobs in Oregon or can I keep applying to Washington jobs?

•You can apply to jobs in either state, but make sure you're genuinely available to accept work. If you're only applying to jobs that are too far away to realistically accept, that could be an issue.

I moved from Washington to California last year while on unemployment and had no problems. Just update your address in the system and keep doing your weekly claims. The benefits come from the state where you earned the wages, not where you live.

•That's reassuring! Did you have to do anything special when you moved or just the address change?

•Just the address change. I kept getting my benefits deposited to the same bank account and everything worked smoothly.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements though. You still need to log 3 job contacts per week in WorkSourceWA, and if you're living in Oregon you might need to register with their state employment office too. I'd call Washington ESD to clarify the specific requirements for your situation.

•Good point about WorkSourceWA. I hadn't thought about whether I'd need to register in Oregon too.

•Actually, I think you can use Oregon's job search activities to meet Washington's requirements, but you need to log them in WorkSourceWA. The interstate agreement covers this stuff.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this exact question last month and couldn't get through after trying for days. Finally used claimyr.com and got connected to an agent in under 10 minutes. They explained everything about interstate moves and benefits. Worth checking out their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ if you're having trouble reaching them.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that service. Did they charge you a lot?

•I'd rather pay a reasonable fee than waste entire days trying to get through. The agent I spoke with was really helpful and knew exactly what to do about moving while on benefits.

wait so you can just move anywhere and keep collecting? that seems weird to me. why wouldn't you have to transfer to the new state's system?

•Because unemployment benefits are based on where you worked and paid into the system, not where you currently live. It's called the Interstate Reciprocal Benefit Payment Plan.

•oh ok that makes sense i guess. thanks for explaining

This is exactly what I needed to know too! I'm thinking about moving back to my hometown in Idaho while I'm between jobs. It's good to know I can keep my Washington benefits.

•Right? I was so worried they'd just cut me off if I moved.

•Same here. The whole system is confusing enough without worrying about losing benefits for moving.

One thing to watch out for - make sure you update your address BEFORE you move, not after. I moved to Nevada and forgot to update my address for like 2 weeks and they sent me a letter asking why I wasn't responding to mail. Almost caused problems with my claim.

Yuki Tanaka
•Good tip! I'll make sure to update it as soon as we sign the lease.

•Yes, keeping your address current is crucial. Any mail from Washington ESD that gets returned can trigger a review of your claim.

I'm dealing with something similar but I'm thinking about moving to Texas. Do the same rules apply for all states or are there some states that don't participate in the interstate thing?
0 coins
Carmen Ortiz
•All states participate in the Interstate Reciprocal Benefit Payment Plan, so Texas should be fine. You'll still file with Washington ESD.

•Perfect, thanks! That takes a lot of stress off this decision.

Just want to add that you might want to consider the tax implications too. Some states don't tax unemployment benefits but others do. Oregon has state income tax so that might affect your overall financial picture.

Yuki Tanaka
•Oh wow, I hadn't even thought about taxes. I should probably talk to a tax person about this.

Giovanni Rossi
•Yeah, it's worth considering especially if you're going to be there for a while. The benefits are still from Washington but you might owe Oregon taxes as a resident.

Does anyone know if there are any restrictions on how long you can be out of state? Like do you have to come back to Washington at some point during your claim?

Carmen Ortiz
•No requirement to return to Washington during your claim period. As long as you're available for work and meeting the job search requirements, you can stay out of state for the entire claim.

I moved to Arizona while on unemployment and the only issue I had was figuring out how to do the work search stuff since I wasn't familiar with Arizona's job market. But I just kept using WorkSourceWA and applied to remote jobs and it worked out fine.

•That's smart thinking about remote jobs. There are probably more remote opportunities now than there used to be.

•Exactly! Made the whole thing much easier than I expected.

Word of warning - if you move make sure your new address is somewhere you can actually receive mail quickly. I moved to a place where mail delivery was really slow and almost missed some important notices from Washington ESD.

Yuki Tanaka
•Good point about mail delivery. I'll make sure to set up mail forwarding too just in case.

•Yes! Mail forwarding is a great backup plan.

This thread is super helpful! I've been putting off a move because I thought it would mess up my benefits. Now I feel much more confident about making the decision.

Quick question - do you have to notify the new state that you're collecting unemployment from another state? Like do I need to tell Oregon that I'm getting Washington benefits?
0 coins
Carmen Ortiz
•Generally no, you don't need to notify the new state about your Washington benefits. The interstate system handles the coordination automatically.

•Perfect, one less thing to worry about. Thanks!

I tried to get clarification on this from Washington ESD customer service but gave up after being on hold for literally 3 hours. Ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it was so much easier. Got all my questions answered about moving while on benefits.

Yuki Tanaka
•3 hours on hold is insane! I might need to check out that service too.

•Yeah, their phone system is brutal. The Claimyr thing actually worked though - got through to a real person who knew what they were talking about.

For what it's worth, I moved twice while on unemployment (long story) and never had any issues. First from Washington to Montana, then from Montana to Colorado. Just kept filing my weekly claims with Washington ESD the whole time.

Yuki Tanaka
•Wow, twice! That's good to know it worked out both times.

Miguel Castro
•Yeah, as long as you keep up with the requirements and update your address, it's pretty straightforward.

Make sure you have reliable internet wherever you're moving! You'll still need to file your weekly claims online and if you're in a rural area or somewhere with bad internet, that could be a problem.

Yuki Tanaka
•Good point! We're moving to Portland so internet shouldn't be an issue, but that's definitely something to consider.

•Portland should be fine! I was thinking more about people moving to really rural areas.

One last thing - if you do move and run into any issues with your claim, document everything. Keep records of when you updated your address, copies of your job search activities, etc. Better to have too much documentation than not enough.

Yuki Tanaka
•Great advice! I'm definitely going to keep better records going forward.

•Yeah, these systems can be unpredictable sometimes so it's good to have a paper trail.
